Now on an undercover mission to save the Earth from an ecological disaster, Buck finds himself trapped on an icy prison moon packed full of his former foes. Soon, he and Colonel Wilma Deering must choose between preventing a madman from blowing them all up, or stopping a mechanical overlord from turning everyone into mindless zombies.

As much fun as the TV show

Author Andrew Graska deftly captures the tone and feel of the first season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century in this novella, the first part of a three-book series. His continuity references show a deep love and understanding of the show without feeling like pointless fan service. The plot, while fairly straightforward, is tense and gripping. While the dialogue at times is clunky and over expository, this is still in keeping with the show. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this continuation of a childhood favorite, and am looking forward to the next installment.

Finally got the paperback version of this. It was fantastic!!
It captures the essence of the classic television series and creates crystal clear visuals of those great characters (and the actors who portrayed them) in the reader's mind. I cannot wait for "Who Mourns for Theopolis".
"Lo, The Rings of Saturn" is a MUST read for any Buck Rogers in the 25th Century fan!!

This is a very fun and nostalgic continuation of the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century television show from the 1970s and 1980s. The book includes many nods to the original show and the characters and situations are pure Buck Rogers. It feels like an episode and includes the humor and Buck Rogers themes that make the show a favorite. A genuinely engaging return to the 25th Century.

Not his usual bag of tricks.

Though this short story isn't in Edward Lorn's usual niche, it still very much comes across as something he has written. His style doesn't change despite the genre jump.
Come is a short story about a man with a very perverted habit -- a habit that he talks about in detail as he goes about his routine while also giving you some back story as to how this habit formed.
To be quite honest, it is gross and gives me the creeps, but it was well written and unique, so Edward gets points for that.
I gave this short story a rating of three stars. I would have given it five for being well written, but the content made me a little squeamish and inspired disgust.
This is not a short story for everyone, but it is definitely an interesting read and completely unique to Edward Lorn's catalog of novels and shorts.

Very good and twisted! This is how short stories are supposed to be done.

Oh, E. You are a twisted man.

A short and strange tale of Geyser and his uncontrollable urge to spread his swimmers around in the hopes that an unsuspecting victim may accidentally lick the telephone receiver. Nice!

This one is a solid 4.5 Amazon Stars for me rounded up to 5 because this is how short stories are supposed to be done.

This title was different than anything Edward Lorn has released to date. He has left the horror in the rearview on this story, but his writing prowess shines and shows the reader that his talent is able to cross genres.This very descriptive short is disturbing in its own way. Edward creates a ultra realistic glimpse into the life of Geyser and his unusual "addiction". No bones about it, Lorn didn't just spurt his words onto the page. If you are in the mood for something different, Edward supplies a tease of talents to come.

Blood-Drenched Beard is - let me say it straight out - an extraordinary book. It's a book about the limitations of memory, the inevitability of fate, the distinction between myth and legend, and the boundaries of forgiveness.

And if all that sounds too heavy, let me add that it's an extremely accessible tale, expertly translated, with a unique and original character that earns his place as one of the more memorable protagonists in contemporary literature.

We know that he is somewhat unmoored, an excellent ocean swimmer, who moves to the Atlantic resort town of Garopaba with his father's old dog Beta after his father kills himself. The town is stingy with its secrets; the man's grandfather, a larger-than-life old gaucho, was supposedly murdered there by fellow villagers. Or was he?

The young man is not only nameless, he also suffers from a rare neurological condition called prosopagnosia; he cannot recall faces, even his own. While he struggles with his own congenital memory black-out, the village seems to suffer from its own; no one can quite remember much about the grandfather and how he died.

In many ways, the character's trajectory resembles Joseph Campell's The Hero's Journey. In this archetypal monomyth, the hero receives a call - a call that he at first ignores - to head off into the unknown. There his guide or magical helper (Beta) appears and together, they cross the threshold into danger, facing a series of tasks and ordeals. In the end, the hero returns, free from the fear of death...which in turn gives him the freedom to live authentically.

Our character is given this advice: "Don't invest too much energy in these things. Folk tales can bury reality forever. You'll only be able to reconstruct what really happened up to a certain point. The rest becomes legend." On his Hero's Journey, our hero discovers the stuff that legends are made of. The tale is mythic and yet grounded and in many ways, foretold and fated.

The book is also beautifully atmospheric. I felt I was right there in Garopaba, and could smell the salty ocean and hear the resort sounds. And any avid dog-lover will connect to this core story of a man and his dog.

One more thing I feel compelled to mention. The Guardian's Justin Cartwright wrote a particularly mean-spirited review about the "shameful translation." I've read a number of translated books and this translation - by Alison Entrekin - is absolutely luminous, drawing me into the novel without hitting a false note. The new year isn't even upon us yet and I think I can safely say that this book will be in my Top Ten for 2015. Bravo!

Exceptional Existential Literary Noir

For anyone looking for a complex and excellent work of literary fiction for after the holidays, may I suggest the beautifully written book by Brazilian author Daniel Galera, Blood Drenched Beard. The title is dark and the book description is equally dark; a son whose fathers shoots himself and his subsequent journey south to Garopaba, a nice and quite fishing village off the Brazilian coast where his grandfather mysteriously disappeared decades earlier. Admittedly one may be wondering why I would recommend such a grim sounding work of literary fiction as a good after the holidays to read, simple, because it is a book one needs to concentrate on, and have the time to marinate in Galera’s exceptionally atmospheric work of existential literary noir. Blood Drenched Beard is not a short book, coming in at just under 400 pages and is meant to be read slowly, as the storylines play out, which gives the reader time to digest what is being discovered and will offer a plethora of topics for discussion groups to talk about. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys exceptionally well-written fiction to watch for the release of Blood Drenched Beard.

A Crazy Ride

Blood Drenched Beard is a trippy book. It had me hooked at the part where-the father who is about to commit suicide tells his son that his grandfather was murdered in cold blood in a remote village. That was enough to drive the story forward and it keeps this momentum throughout the main character's journey to the village and his coming and goings of his everyday life in the small fishing village where his grandfather was last seen.

You have to sort of settle in for this one as we become voyeurs in the life of the nameless man who we live with during this book. He has a strange and rare mental disorder that doesn't allow him to remember faces. He tries to remember certain nuances about people that help him recognize them later on if he meets them again. The main character settles into the little fishing village and gets a job as a swimming instructor. In the meantime, he asks around for information regarding his old murdered grandpa, but no one remembers him, though he gets a strange vibe and strange looks from people.. He lives in a small beach front house that he rents for a year. His main companion is his father's old dog Beta who he promised to kill after his father's suicide but couldn't bring himself to do the deed.

During his stay in the village he meets girls and gets some friends and hangs out in the village. So, parts of this journey are like everyday life, and then there is the mystery of the missing grandfather who we get piece meal info at times that keeps the hook very much engaged. There is a lot of life in this book but it all comes full circle in the end. I don't know how it all works, but it does.

This is a fun book but don't expect action packed adventure, just good writing by Daniel Galera from Brazil who I hope churns out a lot of books in his lifetime. I had to give his book four stars because once in a while I skimmed. There are parts of the book such as when he goes to the circus that I wasn't really interested in and I skimmed in just a couple spots but enough to knock off a star. Otherwise, I enjoyed this archetypal adventure very much. It's nearly 400 pages but that hook, kept me going.

‘Who the heck are you? Oh my gosh is this a serial killer?’

Nicole Stark makes an impressive debut with her young adult novel AFTER IMPACT. Her writing style is solid, her imagination is rich, and she manages to enter that realm of post apocalyptic existence with enough credibility and maintenance of spiritualism that place her book on a higher shelf than those books dealing with a subject that seems all too close in our future. We are enduring wars with ISIS who apparently see the joining of all world countries in a final battle Syria which will introduce the apocalypse.

When an author has the courage to open a book with the following paragraph we know the message to follow will offer some sort of succor of promise: ‘Year 2170 A loud siren woke Avalon up. What’s wrong? Avalon shivered and convulsed as a mysterious liquid flowed past her arms and legs. Cold air assaulted her nostrils. She was lying down on an icy metallic surface, her arms positioned on either side of her body. Am I dead? Is this some sort of out of body experience? Avalon struggled to open her mouth and scream but something was stuck in her throat, preventing her.’ Cryosleep is introduced, as is the story line that is to come.

Or as Nicole summons it, ‘Avalon Adams wakes up 100 years in the future in a new habitat with few memories and lots of questions. At first, HOPE (Humanity's One Plan for Escape) habitat appears to be a well-oiled machine, preparing 5,000 carefully chosen inhabitants for a new Earth. Well considered, well developed, this is a strong opening for a debut novel. And it is a bit refreshing to see the words ‘gosh’ and ‘heck’ used again instead of the current obsession with profanity. Nicole deserves watching. Grady Harp, March 16

Pretty Great Even With Flaws!

I have to say, I'm quite impressed. Never reading anything by Nicole Stark before, I wasn't sure what I was in for. This book is overall pretty good. Definitely one that I would say was a page turner. The story itself is full of different plot twists and is one thrilling adventure. This is one of those books that you can easily lose yourself in while snuggled in your favorite pjs drinking a spot of tea.

Overall, yes there are signs showing that this is a beginning creation by this author but it is filled with quite a bit of imagination and creativity, something that a good majority of the books out there are lacking. These little issues or hiccups are completely forgivable and easy to ignore because the story is really great.

Avalon Adams awakens from cryosleep in Humanity's One Plan for Escape (HOPE) habitat. Confusion assaults her senses as she tries to regain her bearings in such a strange place. With the assistance of Ilium, a physician, she quickly gets going in the right direction. One thing really bothers her, however, and that is a message from her father that tells her to 'be careful who you trust'.

This habitat was designed to hold 5000 inhabitants. An extinction asteroid was inbound and the Earth would cease to be habitable for over a century. Strange occurrences become the focus of Avalon in short order.

The inhabitants of HOPE are divided according to occupation and all 'benefits' are built around that premise. There is a President and a 6 member Council to help govern them.

A most interesting read which also has an ending which one will never see coming. And, confinement aboard this HOPE habitat does not stop romance from budding, either!!

Highly recommended.

HOLY SMOKES this was a dang good read! Wasn't what I was expecting by any means. The story, the characters just gives this book a complete different feel. Well written with an easy flow keeps you interested through the entire book as well as catching your attention right from the start! Really loved the works of this author in this book and looking forward to reading more from her!

The only thing worse than feeling like a misfit is not understanding why you don’t fit in anywhere.

The character development was handled nicely. I got to know both of the main characters pretty well in this short story. It was especially interesting to see how they reacted to all of the things that happened to them as the plot thickened. Their responses remained true to their personalities while also showing signs of personal growth along the way. It was a lot of fun to see these transformations happen, especially when it came to Andi. She had so much to learn in such a short period of time, but she handled it beautifully.

I would have liked to see more attention paid to the conflict that Devon’s pack had with their enemies. Its origins were explained in detail, but the narrator didn’t spend as much time I would have expected to see showing how those old grudges were still around in the present day. This would be a great subject to explore in a sequel if Ms. Frost ever decides to write one for these characters.

What I enjoyed the most about the romance between Andi and Devon was how much time it was given to develop. They got to know each other as individuals before any sparks started to fly, and even they they continued to take things slowly. This was definitely the right decision for these two characters given their ages and everything else that was going on in their lives.

Coming Home was such an exciting read. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes werewolf stories as much as I do.

Melissa Frost’s Coming Home is a detailed and entertaining short story that was hard to put down. I was impressed with all the information that was packed into this contemporary paranormal romance that is suitable for young and new adults.

After her parents’ death, Miranda (Andi) Clover Hurlstone, had been passed from one foster family to the next. A young man named Devon comes into her life claiming that they knew each other as children and are from the same werewolf pack.

Andi and Devon are both well-developed and likable characters. My heart went out to Andi for losing her parents at such a young age and growing up in foster care. I like that Andi was open minded. I felt bad for Devon for losing Andi and was happy that he happened to stumble upon her scent. It was interesting finding out the background story of what happened to Andi and her parents. I appreciated their journey home, and the stops that they made along the way. The ending had an exciting conclusion that felt well resolved. I wouldn’t mind seeing this story spin off into a series.

Unimpressed and unfulfilled

While I understand this book was primarily written from the author's first-hand life experiences, I am really disappointed by the lack of actual creativity in this "fictional" story. For example, the author uses the actual (or very similar) names of friends, colleagues, and some of the influential leaders from the span of 6-8 years of his early life. It is hard to follow. Albeit entertaining at a few points in the book, I found myself skimming through pages rather quickly as it lacked real substance. This story generally focuses on how John skirts the system at a united states federal service academy, as well as highlights how shallow he really is as he sweet talks nearly every female he encounters into bedding with him. If you are looking for a read to provide any motivation or enlightenment, this book is not for you. I give 2 stars for effort, but I struggle to find a true direction to the story nor did it prompt me to be on the lookout for the next book in the trilogy.

Young author, Great story!

Cole Patterson's efforts at his first novel Pride are remarkable. I haven't written a book review since I was in college, when it was required of me for classes. Since then, I have read many excellent books. But, I'm reviewing this book because it's fun for me to support a young writer who is a rising star. I especially enjoyed the author's descriptive language and images of his characters. One day, when this author is #1 on the New York Times best seller list I can say that I called it.
The author's motivation to write this book is very personal. It is because his older brother lives life behind bars in prison, and while reading Pride one gets the feeling that the story explores reasons why some folks take the low road while others struggle, overcome barriers and follow dreams. Cole Patterson's story is narrated by Johnathon, (yep, that's how he spells it) a young boy growing up with a dysfunctional family in a small Georgia town. Dear readers, this boy's life begins in circumstances where most young folks consider themselves to be victims and see a dismal future where there is no way out of the poverty and oppression. Johnathon and his older brother, Joe are mavericks who manage to break every rule imaginable. Their capers made me laugh out loud at the same time I was touched by their sad upbringing.
Through his intelligence, athletic prowess and sheer determination Johnathon manages to earn an appointment to the Naval Academy. At this point his life is set on a path which reverses his family's pattern. The story picks up with his indoctrination into the academy where he makes great friends while he makes enemies. He has no shame, he's a schemer, a rebel and a womanizer to name just a few of his attributes. This novel takes us from a country town in the South to Annapolis to New York city on 9-11. All the while Johnathon is maturing in small increments and moving toward realizing his dreams. I'm a sucker for happy endings and Pride has an ending which caused me to cry happy tears.
Pride is book 1 of the Masked Ambition Trilogy. This reader is looking forward to following Johnathon on his adventures in the forthcoming books, I'm sure the roller coaster ride will make for entertaining reading.

Great book!

Great book!! This book was impossible to stop reading! Pride has it all, the author was able to mix in so many great stories with life lessons. I loved how the author, Cole Patterson, was able to make the reader connect with the main character! A must read! I'm excited about the other two books in this series.

Disliked at first but then I fell in love.

So basically this is a modern day version of Hamlet (by Shakespeare). I really liked this book, it was very good, I really enjoyed it. I love how it focuses on Ophelia and she is the main focus instead of Malachi unlike in Hamlet where he is the main focus.

When I was writing this review in my head, in the beginning, I wasn't loving this book. I actually hated it. The POV (point of view) changes ever chapter and normally that doesn't bother me. However, this book changes from a Third Person Point of View focusing on Malachi to First Person Point of View in Ophelia's view. That was majorly distracting to me. In the beginning I did not like it what so ever. It made it hard for me to fall for the characters because the chapters were short so it didn't give me enough time to forget it was going to change views. I felt like I couldn't fall for the characters or plot or story or anything because the chapters were short and I was plagued with the fear of it changing views. By the eighth chapter, however, the chapters got longer and I fell in love with everything.

My love of Shakespeare and curiosity won out over the fear of changing views.

By the end of this book, I was loving the changing of views and understood why she did it the way she did.

Ophelia is the main character and Malachi is her love interest, not the other way around as I first thought. Yes, this book also centers around Malachi but the reason Ophelia's view is in first person is because we need to know how she is feeling, what she is thinking, how she is seeing things because she is so well gaurded. We need to love 'the weird crazy girl' as much as Malachi does.

So much is going on around Malachi, with his uncle/step-father, his ill-looking sister, and his mother, who, I feel, is crazy. We have to have third person to see everything around him but if we had that with Ophelia, I would not have loved her. I wouldn't have liked her. You have to feel everything she does or you just can't love her. I think it would have been very impactful if we had seen Malachi's view in first person but for story progression, it just couldn't happen.

The back of the book warned me it is considered upper YA and is 15+. This book is no doubt NA (New Adult) and I consider it is 17+. I would not be okay with my 15-year-old friend reading this book. The language is very strong and has many adult themes and two sex scenes, not very detailed but you know it's happening and how it makes them feel.

But, I mean, you can't do an impactfully retelling of Hamlet without adult scenes, can you?

All of this said I loved the book. If you have not read Hamlet, I feel you wouldn't understand certain characters popping up without explanation but being a Shakespeare nerd, I loved everything about it.

Through the whole book, I was wondering how she would do the ending and how it would tie in the "A Tale of Obsession" and she did it wonderfully.

Ultimately it is a story of love and compassion.

This is NOT a story for the feint-of-heart. There is so much to deal with in this story that I barely know where to begin.....

Malachi Stone is a beautiful and brilliant young man. The stage is set with Malachi in a deep well of despair after the untimely death of his father followed, rather too quickly, by the marriage of his mother to his Uncle. Much of the focus of this story is on personal demons. Malachi's relationship with his girlfriend, Lucy. His strained relationship with his mother and uncle/step father. His relationship with his younger sister (Maud) and, perhaps most importantly, his relationship with Ophelia. Their's is a strange relationship... One that gives the appearance of unrequited love. To the casual observer it may appear that Malachi is toying with Ophelia... Stringing her along while continuing a more 'proper' relationship with Lucy, who is more equal, on a social level, than Ophelia. Looks can be deceiving though, and Malachi and Ophelia are intellectually very suited to one another. They share a passion for thought provoking discussion and understand each other on a very deep level, perhaps even more so than they realise themselves.

Ophelia is a lovely young woman who has had far too much to deal with from a very young age. Her mother is mentally ill and Ophelia has had to deal with a number of suicide attempts by her mother... The numerous stays in the mental ward that follow and the after hospital care required. Much of this has fallen on her young shoulders while her father works himself into an early grave, and I mean that literally, trying to keep things afloat.

This story deals with so many heart breaking experiences. Many of which are still seen as taboo by most people. The difficult topics often make for the deepest of stories. Perhaps because they make us look at ourselves and others in a completely different, and somewhat uncomfortable light. Mental illness, death, abuse (both sexual and substance) and love. All of these are dealt with in a deeply thought provoking way. If you have ever experienced ANY of these things, I'm certain that this story will resonate with you. Some people will see this as a depressing story of loss, but in truth, it is not. There is triumph within the tragedy and it is easy to see how one event could realistically lead to the other. I love stories which show the darkness and the light in life. There is no perfect story where everyone gets a happy ending, although it is what we all wish for. You don't know what is going on behind closed doors. People who seem, on the surface, to have it all, could be hiding any number of dark and disturbing tragedies. This certainly shines a light on that.

Ultimately it is a story of love and compassion. A story of self-discovery and strength born from soul crushing tragedy. I loved this story. This is the first book I have read by Katie M. John .... It will not be the last.

Absolutely incredible!

Katie M. John did it again. A book that touches the heart and surprisingly someone could relate to the obsession of a crush. I couldn't put it down and was in tears and sorrow.

I enjoyed the two point of views but the first person to third person was getting slightly confusing.

One just wants to grab Malachi, hug him and knock some sense into him. It took him long enough to grow some balls but by then it was too late. His love for his sister is just touching, wanting to protect her.

Ophelia grew a spine and realized she had to move on. No regrets, no what ifs. Sebastian knew and loves her so much he looks the other way. The two deserve each other.

If you are looking for the Happily Ever After, this is not your book. Katie M. John went out side the box, sorry for the cliche, but this isn't her typical type of book I am used to reading from her. It is brilliant and her writing is so captivating, luring you in with the first sentence. Her descriptions are exquisite. Her books never fail to impress me.

WHY IS THIS BOOK NOT POPULAR YET?

Laughing out loud. Checked. Kick-ass princess. Checked. Funny best friend. Checked. Teasing and charismatic prince. Checked. WHY IS THIS BOOK NOT POPULAR ALREADY? Hahah okay let’s take a moment to describe why I think this book is so awesome. It starts off with Ginny, the princess who doesn’t want to fit in the palace life. She enjoys runaway life, dancing in bars, fighting and most of all, she is enjoying not being the Queen, taking the heir. Yes, she hates it. She wants to do everything to avoid having to rule her kingdom. She even planned secretly to wait until her little brother can get married and just pass it on the crown to him. Unfortunately, one event is going to change her decisions forever. She will not have a choice but to accept the crown.
The author’s writing style is comparable to Leigh Barduro (Author of Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows) ! She depicts all the characters with unique features and they are all lovable in their own ways. The first pages got me hooked and it wasn’t hard for me to finish the book in 2 days. Storyline is beyond perfect. Prepare yourself for an amusing , satisfying expedition to the unexpected reign of a not-so-conventionnal-princess! Although it didn’t have the plot twist and mindblowing effect of a 5 stars novel, it got everything else that’s why it deserved a 4.5 on my list. If the author is planning on doing a sequel, I volunteer!! Haha

An Enticing Novel That Needs To Be Read

Against the Reign is such a powerful novel, and I absolutely loved it. I have not found myself so excited about a novel in quite some time, and I appreciate that this novel gave me that excitement about reading that I haven't felt in quite awhile. The world that Dover Winters presented to the reader was vibrant and alive, and I felt as though I had fallen right into her novel.

First off, Ginny is a perfect character. She is a princess, but she doesn't act like one. I loved how rough and tough she was,and how she defied the traditional fictional princess stereotype. I immediately wanted to be friends with Ginny because she felt so raw and real, and that is something that I always look for in a novel. I also admired her strength to take her responsibilities seriously when she needed to, and this passion was purely infatuating.

But what stood out to me about this novel the most was Dover Winters' writing itself. Her descriptions were absolutely perfect and not overbearing or leaving much to be desired. She clearly had a firm grasp on her setting, story, and characters, and I didn't once doubt her novel planning or writing talent. I honestly couldn't think up anything that I would change about this novel, and that is a big success in my book; especially since I am a critical reviewer. I would gladly read this novel over again just so that I could revisit the characters as though they are old friends of mine. I didn't want this novel to end, and I will definitely be following Dover Winters and reading anything else that she releases. Her writing is flawless, and I hope she only continues to grow with her work. If you are looking for a fantastical novel with strong characters and an exciting plot, then Against the Reign is the one for you!

Even if you already have the 3,500 books (fiction,non-fiction), memoir and poetry on the Vietnam War, I strongly recommend you add A GRUNT'S LIFE to your collection!
It's the first truly easy read, and wonderful gift to answer your grand kids eventual question, "What did you do in the War grandpa?"
The combat infantry artwork sketches alone should be in every VFW & American Legion Post across the land.
This one belongs to us Grunts! Get Some!
