Enjoyable...
By A Customer
It was interesting to see Liz and Enid reacting to a 'changed' Amy. I liked the way the book conveyed Enid's jealousy of Amy but, also at the same time, she was portrayed as being insecure and threatened by the return of Liz's 'best friend'. I liked the 'showdown' at the party when Amy keeps hassling poor old Christopher for a ride, when he just wants to be with Enid. I did feel a bit sorry for Liz, especially since she was caught between them.

Too Bad...........
By A Customer
It's just too bad Amy changed. I used to like her a lot. But now that she has grown to be like Jessica, I am totally disappointed. Well, anyway, people changed. I guess it's good. At least Liz found out that Amy is no longer the same Amy who had been her best friend. Lucky for her, she had Enid. This book is quiet good.

Superb anthology
By Zakeeya
This anthology is a superb collection of brilliant talent. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every story. I was amazed at the creativity that was borne from such broad themes. To me, this book is comparable in creative quality to Jhumpa Lahiri's Pullitzer-winning 'Interpreter of Maladies'. I cannot complete this review without giving due credit to the artistic talent of Diana Bedrossian, who designed an appropriate and capturing cover illustration. Altogether a fabulous package!

Please don't waste your time or money. I was only able to get through half of this collection of trite and lacking in creativity short stories but that was more than enough to make up my mind your time is better spent somewhere else.

About the Author
Venezuela. 24 años. Escritor.

- Anna.
By Amazon Customer

By Stefanie

Dexter Is Dead: A Novel, by Jeff Lindsay

After seven national bestsellers and eight seasons as one of the most successful shows on television, New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lindsay bids a thrilling farewell to his uniquely twisted and beloved serial killer, Dexter Morgan. Dexter Is Dead is the definitive conclusion of the character who has become a global icon.

Dexter Morgan has burned the candle at both ends for many years. Blood spatter analyst . . . husband . . . father . . . serial killer. And now, for the first time, his world has truly collapsed. Dexter is arrested on charges of murder. He has lost everything—including his wife, his kids, and the loyalty of his sister. Now completely alone, Dexter faces a murder charge (for a crime . . . ironically . . . he did not actually commit). His only chance for freedom lies with his brother, Brian, who has a dark plan to prove Dexter's innocence. But the stakes are deadly, and the epic showdown that lies in Dexter's path may lead, once and for all, to his demise.
Jeff Lindsay's trademark devilish wit and cutting satire have never been sharper. Dexter Is Dead marks the end of a beloved series, but is also Dexter's most satisfying and suspenseful outing yet.

Review
“Fans will rush through . . . double-quick in order to savor every moment of Dexter's final hour.”
    —Kirkus Reviews

"Jeff Lindsay has brought his 'A' game to this farewell, wrapping things up in fine fashion."
     –Bookreporter

Praise for the Dexter series

“It’s like very little else you’ve read. Imagine if Hannibal Lecter starred in CSI: Miami instead of David Caruso, and you’re halfway there.”
     —Time

“Dexter’s sardonic voice [is] so snappy and smart, and yet so full of self-loathing that we hate ourselves for laughing.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“One of the most likable vigilante serial killers in recent thriller literature.”
    —The New Yorker

“Like a breath of fresh air blowing across all of crime-novel conventions, there is Dexter.”
    —The Denver Post

“Wonderfully fresh and packed with just the right amount of grotesquerie and wry wit.”
    —USA Today

“An entertaining, funny series that draws us in and makes us root, almost against our will, for a ruthless, yet appealing killer. In his own way, Dexter is trying to make the world a better place.”
    —Sun-Sentinel (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)

“May be the first serial killer who unabashedly solicits our love.”
    —Entertainment Weekly

“Totally captivating. . . . Totally original. The characters are beautifully drawn, particularly Dexter, who is tremendously likable, his hobby notwithstanding.”
    —St. Petersburg Times

One

It wasn’t supposed to end this way.

In a flash of steel, yes; a flurry of gunshots, a chorus of strangled moans and anguished sighs, blending with the distant wail of sirens, certainly. A properly dramatic ending with a good body count, a futile struggle against impending doom, even a dash of treachery, absolutely. And then the fatal blow, a few moments of anguish, a last sigh filled with regret for things undone, and fade to black: a fitting end for a life of wicked pleasure.

But not like this.

Not with Dexter in Durance, horribly wronged, slandered, unjustly accused of doing terrible things that he did not even get to do. Not this time, that is. This time, this one catastrophic multihomicidal time, Dexter is as innocent as the driven snow—or perhaps the sand on South Beach would be more apt. Although truth be told, nothing on South Beach is really innocent, any more than Dexter, whose catalog of wicked whimsical works is, to be fair, quite lengthy. It just doesn’t include anything from current events, more’s the pity. Not this time.

And not like this. Not locked away in the tiny chill ill-smelling cell in Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center—and on the top floor, at that, the special purgatory reserved for the most heinous and unrepentant monsters. Every basic freedom ripped away. Every moment, waking and sleeping, subject to scrutiny. Dexter’s entire world reduced to this tiny cell, no more than a thick steel door and even thicker concrete block walls, broken only by a slim slit that lets in light but does not let out sight. A narrow metal shelf with a thin and battered thing on it, laughingly referred to as a “mattress.” A sink, a toilet, a shelf. Dexter’s World.

And no more than this, no connection at all to the outside, beyond the narrow slot in the door that delivers the Officially Nutritious meals. No Internet, no television, no radio, nothing that might distract me from contemplation of my many uncommitted sins. Of course, I may request reading matter—but I have found through bitter experience that the two most popular titles in the library are “Not Allowed” and “Don’t Have It.”

Regrettable, lamentable, even pitiable. Poor Sad-Sack Dexter, tossed on the sterile institutional scrap heap.

But, of course, who could have sympathy for a monster like me? Or as we must all say in these days of conscience fueled by lawsuits, alleged monster. And they do allege it. The cops, the courts, the correctional system itself, and my dear sister, Deborah—even I, if pressed, will allege that I am, in fact, a monster. And I truly did, without allegement of any kind, flee the scene wherein lay the murdered body of Jackie Forrest, famous actress, and coincidentally known to be my paramour. I was then discovered in flagrante sangre, with the bodies of my wife, Rita, and Robert the famous actor, not to mention the very much alive but scantily clad Astor, my twelve-year-old adoptive daughter. She it was who killed Robert “Famous Actor” Chase, who had dressed her in a negligee and then killed Rita. Poor bumbler that I am, I stumbled in to Set Things Right and instead tumbled it all into deep, dark, endless, and possibly permanent Wrong—and very nearly became Robert’s next victim.

My story is simple, straightforward, and unassailable. I learned Robert was a pedophile and had taken Astor. While I looked for him, he killed Jackie. And as one final irony in our King of Fools Crown Derby, Rita—helpless, hapless, hopeless Rita, Queen of the Scatterbrained Monologue Dear Ditzy Rita, who could not find her own car keys if they were welded to her fist—Rita found him before I did. Robert thumped her on the head, from which blow she died while Robert was busy thumping me and planning a romantic escape with his True Love, Astor. While I lay bound and helpless, Astor stuck a knife in Robert, set me free, and so ended this zany, madcap adventure of Doofus Dexter, Bumbler Extraordinaire. If there really is a God, which is, at very best, extremely debatable, he has a terrible sense of humor. Because the detective in charge of deciphering the carnage is Detective Anderson, a man who has lived his life without making a friend of intelligence, wit, or competence. And possibly because I am so very liberally endowed with all three, and additionally because he knew me to be intimate with Miss Forrest, a thing he could only drool and dream of, Detective Anderson absolutely, without compromise, hates me. Loathes, despises, detests, and abhors the very air I breathe. And so my simple story quickly became an Alibi, which is never a good thing. Even quicker, I moved from Person of Interest to Suspect, and then . . . Detective Anderson took one quick glance at the crime scenes and formed a simple conclusion, undoubtedly the only kind he can form. Aha, quoth he, Dexter Done It. Justice is served. Or words to that effect, probably a great deal simpler and less elegant, but in any case resulting in my promotion from Suspect to Perpetrator.

And I, still reeling from the death of Jackie, my ticket to a new and better life, plus the death of Rita and her entire book of delightful recipes, and the sight of Astor in a white silk negligee—still reeling, I say, from the utter destruction of All the Order and Certainty that was Dexter’s World, past, present, and future—I find myself hauled roughly to my feet, handcuffed with hands behind my back, and chained to the floor of a squad car, which drives me to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility.

Without a kind word or sympathetic glance from anyone, I am led, still draped with cold steel chains, inside the huge concrete, barbed wire–bedecked building, and into a room that looks like the waiting room of the Greyhound station in Hell. The room is full to overflowing with desperate characters—killers and rapists and thugs and gangsters all, my kind of people! But I am given no time at all to sit and consort with my fellow alleged monsters, no chance for a Hail Felon, Well Met. Instead, I am hustled straight through to the next room, where I am photographed, fingerprinted, stripped, and issued a lovely orange jumpsuit. It is fashionably baggy, and the bright colors say spring! The aroma, however, has a less cheery message, blooming somewhere between insecticide and lemon candies made from old Chinese drywall. But I am given no choice of color, nor of odor, and so I proudly wear the orange, which after all is one of the trademark colors of my alma mater, the University of Miami.

And then, still festooned with restraints, I am brought here, to my new home, the ninth floor, and deposited without ceremony in my present tidy nook.

And here I sit in TGK. The joint, the slammer, the Big House. One small cog in the gigantic correctional wheel, which itself is only a little piece of the massive and coldly incompetent machine that is Justice. Dexter is now being Corrected. What is it, I wonder, that they hope to Correct? I am what I am, irredeemably, irretrievably, implacably—as are most of my fellow desperadoes here on nine. We are monsters, stamped from birth with forbidden hungers, and these can no more be Corrected than can the need to breathe. Bird gotta whistle, fish gotta swim, and Dexter gotta find and flense the slippery wicked predators. However InCorrect that may be, it irreversibly Is.

But I am in the Correctional System now, subject to its clockwork whims and institutional hardness. I am no more than an unCorrectable error waiting to be Corrected while the proper forms are filled out and filed and forgotten, however long that may take. Parenthetically, it does seem to be taking quite a while. There is some small tidbit of arcane Constitutional Trivia rattling around in my poor withered brain that mumbles something about a speedy trial—and I have not even been arraigned. Surely this is somewhat irregular? But I am offered no company other than my guards, and they are not terribly chatty, and I have no opportunity to make the acquaintance of anyone else who might answer my polite questions about due process. So I am forced into the ludicrous position of trusting in the system—a system that I know far too well is far from trustworthy.

And in the meantime? I wait.

Life is, at least, simple and regular. I am awakened at four thirty a.m. by a cheerful bell. Shortly after, the slot in my cell’s door, sealed over by a steel flap that is held shut by a very strong spring, reluctantly opens and my breakfast tray comes through on the metal tongue of the cart made for that purpose. Ah, delectable viands! Institutional cereal, toast, coffee, juice. Almost edible, and there is nearly enough! What bliss.

Lunch is similarly delivered, at ten thirty. It is an even greater flight of gourmet abandon—a sandwich containing a cheeselike substance, carefully hidden under a piece of soft and fluffy green stuff that is clearly synthetic recycled iceberg lettuce. Beside it on the tray, some lemonade, an apple, and a cookie.

In the afternoon, under the watchful eyes of my shepherd, Lazlo, I am permitted an hour of solitary exercise in the Yard. It is not really a yard at all; there are no trees, no grass, no lawn chairs or toys. It is in fact a wedge-shaped concrete floor whose only virtues are that it is open to the sky and contains a netless basketball hoop. Of course, this time of year it is usually raining in the afternoon, and so even this small virtue is somewhat double-edged. I also discover that once I am In The Yard, I must stay there for the full hour, or go back to my cell. I learn to enjoy the rain. And soaking wet, I return to my cell. Dinner at five. Lights-out at ten. A simple life of modest comforts. So far the great rewards one reaps from solitude and simplicity, as promised by Thoreau, have not been forthcoming, but perhaps they will emerge in time. And Time is the one thing I have plenty of.

Ten days in jail. I wait. To a lesser man, the endless spell of oppressive nothingness might seem stifling, even soul-destroying. But, of course, Dexter has no soul, if such things even exist. And so I find a great deal to do. I count the concrete blocks in my wall. I arrange my toothbrush. I attempt mental games of chess, and when I can’t remember where the pieces are, I switch to checkers and then, when that fails, to Go Fish. I always win.

I pace my cell. It’s large enough to permit me almost two full steps. When I tire of this, I do push-ups. I do a little tai chi, bumping my fists on the walls with nearly every move.

And I wait. From my wide reading, I know that the greatest danger of solitary incarceration is the temptation to succumb to the dreadful weight of tedium, sink into the stress-free bliss of insanity. I know that if I do, I will never get out, never resume my safe and sane normal life of happy wage slave by day, even happier Knight of the Knife by night. I must hold on, keep a tight grip on what passes for sanity in this veil of tears, hold on white-knuckled to the absurd and baseless belief that innocence still counts for something and I Am Truly Innocent . . . relatively speaking. In this case, at least.

I have certain knowledge, based on vast experience with That Old Whore Justice, that Actual Innocence has nearly as much influence on my fate as the starting lineup for the Marlins. But I cling to hope anyway, because anything else is unthinkable. How can I face even one more hour of this if I don’t believe that eventually it will end—with me on the outside? Even the thought of endless cheeselike sandwiches is no comfort. I must believe, blindly, unreasonably, even stupidly, that someday Truth will out, Justice will prevail, and Dexter will be free to run laughing into the sunlight. And, of course, smirking into the moonlight, sliding softly through the velvet dark with a knife and a need—

I shiver. Mustn’t get ahead of myself. Must avoid such thoughts, fantasies of freedom that steal focus from right now and what to do about it. I must remain here mentally, as well as physically, right here in my snug little cell, and concentrate on getting out.

Once more I flip through my mental ledger and add up the blurred and uncertain figures. On the plus side, I really and truly am innocent. I didn’t do it. Not even some of it. Not me.

On the minus side, it sure looks like I did.

And worse, the entire Miami police force would like to see someone like me convicted for these crimes. They very publicly promised to protect our two Famous Actors, and more publicly failed to do so. And if the killer was some plausible insider—me again—they are off the hook. So if the officer in charge is willing to bend things a little bit, he almost certainly will.

Even more minus: Detective Anderson is in charge. He will not merely bend things; he will mangle them, hammer them into the shape he wants, and serve them up in sworn testimony. He has, in fact, already done so, and it must be said that the legion of Wonderful Haircuts that constitutes the media has been eating it up, for the very simple reason that it is simple, as simple as they are, which is possibly even simpler than Anderson, a shudder-inducing thought. They have lunged to grab my guilt with both greedy fists, and the photo of Dexter Arrested, according to Lazlo, has festooned the front pages and adorned the evening news for over a week now. The picture shows me draped in chains, head bowed, face set in a mask of stunned indifference, and I must say I look extremely guilty, even to me. And I do not need to point out that, moral clichés to the contrary, Appearances do not Deceive, not in our age of Instant Summarized Sound-Bite Certainty. I am guilty because I look guilty. And I look guilty because Detective Anderson wishes it.

Anderson wants me dead, enough so that he will cheerfully perjure himself to get me halfway there. Even if he didn’t loathe me, he would do it because he has a professional hatred for my sister, Sergeant Deborah, who he quite rightly sees as a rival, and one who must eventually surpass him by a considerable margin. But if her brother—c’est moi!—is a convicted murderer, this would almost certainly derail the mighty choo-choo of Deb’s career track, and consequently advance his.

"It wasn't supposed to end this way."
By E. Bukowsky
Book eight in Jeff Lindsay's Dexter Morgan series, "Dexter is Dead," finds our antihero in a tight spot. He has been arrested on suspicion of being a pedophile and murderer. Detective Anderson of the Miami Police Department loathes Dexter and falsifies evidence to make the case against Dexter airtight. Coming to Dexter's aid is his equally psychopathic brother, Brian, who also takes pleasure in carving people up. Brian has come into a small fortune and uses some of his ill-gotten gains to hire high-powered attorney Frank Kraunauer to represent Dexter. The lawyer manages to get Dexter out of jail, at least temporarily.

Once freed, Dexter plans to prove his innocence, but will get no assistance from his sister, Deborah, who despises him. One big problem with Dexter's character is that he fluctuates from evil to decent and back again. He was married to the flighty but good-hearted Rita, had an adorable little girl upon whom he doted, and grew to care about his two adopted children. Now, Dexter is all gloom and negativity ("I will always be Dexter the Monster, human appearing, but walking through life with one foot always in perpetual Darkness.") Any hint of a conscience has vanished and he is focused on staying alive, reminding free, and eating delicious meals.

The finale of "Dexter is Dead" has some entertaining moments. It is intermittently suspenseful and perversely funny. Dexter's narration is clever, witty, and sarcastic. What may turn readers off, however, is that Morgan has become so self-centered, unlikeable, callous, and cynical that we want to kill him ourselves. Why should we care about someone who wallows in self-pity and behaves like a spoiled brat? In the past, we had hopes that Dexter was capable of evolving into someone we could at least partially embrace. We do see a hint of belated altruism on Dexter's part, but it is out of sync with the rest of the story; Devilish Dexter and Dexter Do-Right have never been particularly compatible. Ultimately, there is little doubt that Jeff Lindsay made the right decision when he bid "hasta la vista" to a series that has clearly run its course.

A Fine Farewell
By Buffy
No spoilers here so the short review is: I liked it. The setup is we find our hero, Dexter, confined in a maximum security prison for murders he actually did not commit. He's in the cell for weeks until finally a public defendant comes to see him. The case being put up against and the procedures are irregular. Something is not quite right. Deborah doesn't even come to visit Dexter until a few weeks have passed and then it's just to have Dexter sign papers giving her custody of his kids. Things do not look good for our hero. This last book flows wonderfully. All of Dexter's wit and darkness are here and the writing is crisp. This last book may not end the way everyone wants it to but I enjoyed taking a ride with the mind of Dexter for one last trip. For those expecting this book to pick up where the tv series left off it does not. The show and book did not match up so there are characters and events that happened differently. There is a very brief recap of previous events in the first few pages but you may want to go back to get a better idea of what's happened. Not essential because of the recap but why not delve a little further into Dexter's world given the chance? Dexter was a delightfully sinister character and for that I'm recommending the book to fans of the Dexter books. Hopefully this review helps a little in making your decision!

A Solid Conclusion to an Average Series
By Ethan
Jeff Lindsay's novels featuring serial killer Dexter Morgan have not only become a bestselling book series, but they have also spawned a critically and commercially successful television series. Despite this success, the novels have continually decreased in quality, culminating in a disappointing cliffhanger in the previous novel Dexter's Final Cut. I was ready to give up on this series, but was too intrigued by the title of this novel to not give it a read. After a two year hiatus, Lindsay returns to bring the saga of Dexter Morgan, the affable psychopath, to a definitive conclusion.

After years of living a double life, Dexter Morgan finds himself in the very place that he has so diligently avoided. By day, Dexter is a forensic scientist for the Miami Police Department. By night, a serial killer. Focusing his "dark passenger" on those who truly deserve death, mostly criminals, Dexter has maintained a low profile. But now all of that has changed. In a darkly ironic twist of events, Dexter's wife and the man who murdered her are both dead, and Dexter is the only suspect. Take growing circumstantial evidence, add a lead detective's personal vendetta, and you've got one damning case against everyone's favorite murderer. As a result, Dexter finds himself locked in a maximum security prison facing an eternity of confinement for a murder he did not commit.

In the previous novel, Dexter went from amiable perpetrator to adulterous prick, making him very difficult to root for. Fortunately, Lindsay corrects this error by stacking the deck completely against him. Beyond the wrongful arrest, the police department is manipulating evidence, falsifying documents, and threatening anyone who dares to question their methods. As diabolical as Dexter's actions are, it is even more deplorable to see the justice system abused in this way. Normally, Dexter's adopted sister Deborah would be the first person to step in and help her only surviving family member, however Dexter's actions in the previous novel have left her unwilling to speak to her brother. With all hope seemingly lost, Dexter finds himself with only one person to turn to. . . his murderous brother Brian.

It is refreshing to see an author bring a bestselling series to a definitive conclusion. Like most popular fiction series, the Dexter saga has had its ups and downs. With this final novel, Lindsay recaptures all of the elements that made Dexter a thoughtful, engaging, and satisfying read. Dexter's witty inner dialogue makes him surprisingly accessible. As much as readers can find small ways to identify with the character, Dexter is still a psychopathic killer who has no empathy. Throughout the series, Dexter was motivated by not revealing his secret and keeping his family safe. But he was never able to truly connect to the "family" he camouflaged himself with. By freeing his protagonist from the bonds of his elaborate facade, Lindsay allows Dexter to finally express his genuine thoughts with unapologetic honesty. In the end, Dexter receives a fitting conclusion that is true to the essence of this darkly intriguing character and satisfying to the fans who have read or watched his story over the last eleven years.

Excellent First Novel
By Amazon Customer
Excellent job by the author in bringing the sights and sounds of Afghanistan to life. Good plot and characters. Very easy to read and kept my attention. I hope she writes another book soon. Only criticism is for the editor - too many misplaced punctuation marks and incorrect words (then for than, their for they're, pass for past, etc.).

Calling All Book Clubs!!!
By Susan O.
A fast pace story by this new author of two young family members, born a generation apart, yet joined in ways that only fate can bring about! The prologue sets the stage and it is one of those books you can't stop reading! This is a novel of war and its horrors but it also spoke to me of great love and loyalty. I learned a lot about this culture and the things our troops endure. And, on a lighter note, I enjoyed the many references to the Buffalo area (the main character's hometown).

I highly recommend this book!

S.E.X…Sex, Sex, Sex! It’s everywhere! On television. On social media. In magazines. At school. The mall. The beauty salon. The barbershop. It’s everywhere! And guess what? Everyone has an opinion about it too! Your friends. Your friends’ friends. Your parents. Your coach(es). Your pastor. Even your grandparents. You see, our society is built around the idea that “sex sells” and not surprisingly, it does. That’s why it’s everywhere you look and also, why so many people have such strong opinions about it. But, you know what? When it comes to sex, to have or not to have, the thoughts and opinions of others won’t matter as much as those that you develop on your own. Ultimately, you will need to be able to answer, for yourself, important questions like:

•What is the purpose of sex?
•When is it okay to have sex?
•How many sexual partners is it okay to have? Is there a limit?
•How can sex affect me? Physically? Emotionally? Spiritually?
•What’s the point of waiting until I’m married to have sex?
•What does it mean to be abstinent?

The 5 Things Every Teen Should Know About Sex is intended to help you in your journey to answer the above questions for yourself. You see, to get a proper understanding of sex, you must first see what its inventor, God, has to say about it. After all, He created it, so who better to learn from? With this new knowledge, you will be able to make the right choices about sex; choices that will protect you and ultimately, please God.

A Great Manuel

This is a simplistic guide for teenagers into the complex world of sex without giving them parental type instructions. It is a must read for all teenagers. It is a quick one-night read. The author really nailed it for the teenagers, parents, and mentors….

He's Done it Again!
By Earthworm
I was a huge fan of Mosley's last book "Rededication", which outlined his personal journey and struggle with sexual sin as a young adult, so my ears perked up when discovered that he'd written a book on sex targeted towards teens. In this day and age, sex is glorified by the internet and social media, and is more prevalent in society than ever, particularly for our young people. Yet, there is very little meaningful discussion and guidance around the topic. Mosley jumps right into this void with this book. "5 Things Every Teen Should Know About Sex" addresses in an accessible and relevant context how sex should be thought about from a biblical but yet practical perspective. A relatively quick read, its the perfect length for a teen's attention span and is just as candid and authentic as his first book. What I likes most is that "5 things" strikes a perfect balance between referencing scripture and delivering practical insights, such as highlighting that while many men spend much of their time in their younger years pursuing women, most when seeking their future wife apply significant value to how FEW sexual partners a woman has had. This book is truly an awesome read, and a perfect gift for young men and women in your life who are in the midst of those critical teenage years. I personally bought 5 copies myself and gave them out as Christmas presents to my nieces and nephews a few days ago. Mosley's done it again!

Parents and teens will enjoy!
By Tiffany Wilson
This book is a great read for pre-teens and teens that are starting to be curious about sex and need honest, biblical answers. It can be a useful tool for parents that struggle with having a down-to-earth conversation with their children about sex as well. I wish I had a book like this when I was teen.

Fuego blanco / White Fire (Pendergast Series) (Spanish Edition), by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

English Description

Colorado, 1876: At a remote mining camp high in the Rocky Mountains, eleven silver miners are killed, their bodies horribly mutilated, flesh devoured. Bear attack? Not everyone thinks so.

136 years later, the cemetery where the miners were buried is being cleared for new development. Forensic pathologist Corrie Swanson has arranged to study the bones. What she discovers will expose a conspiracy that's as lethal today as it was a century ago.

As the winter snows fall, Corrie's life depends on unravelling a dark secret... the key to which may just lie in a lost Sherlock Holmes story, a tale allegedly so horrifying that its author never dared publish it.

Bien escrito como siempre, interesante en su planteamiento de incluir en la trama a clásicos de la literatura inglesa. Me gustó.

Weathering, by Lucy Wood

Pearl doesn't know how she's ended up in the river--the same messy, cacophonous river in the same rain-soaked valley she'd been stuck in for years. But here her spirit swirls and stays . . . Ada, Pearl's daughter, doesn't know how she's ended up back in the house she left thirteen years ago--with no heating apart from a fire she can't light, no way of getting around apart from an old car she's scared to drive, and no company apart from her own young daughter, Pepper. She wants to clear out Pearl's house so she can leave and not look back. Pepper has grown used to following her restless mother from place to place, but this house, with its faded photographs, its boxes of cameras and its stuffed jackdaw, is something new. Fascinated by the scattering of people she meets, by the river that unfurls through the valley, and by the strange old woman who sits on the bank with her feet in the cold, coppery water, Pepper doesn't know why anyone would ever want to leave.

As the first frosts of autumn herald the coming of a long winter and Pepper and Ada find themselves entangled with the life of the valley, with new companions who won't be closed out, each will discover the ways that places can take root inside us, bind us together, and become us.

Review

“One of Wood's great strengths is the ability to fully inhabit her characters' consciousness. She skilfully modifies her prose as she moves from one mind to another, leavening her vividly descriptive passages with snippets of speech or thought, wittily profane and colloquial . . . Pepper is a glorious child in the tradition of Harper Lee's Scout and Donna Tartt's Harriet.” ―The Guardian

“Recalls Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping . . . Wood is a creator of worlds. This sodden river valley is one to savour.” ―The Daily Telegraph

“Wood beautifully renders a landscape by turns rain-soaked and snow-laden . . . The author has a gift for capturing how humans are bound to and moulded by places.” ―The Sunday Times

“Marvelous . . . Bears a strong resemblance to E. Annie Proulx's The Shipping News . . . I could tell you this novel is about the portrait of an artist as a young girl. Or the thorny but loving relationship between mothers and daughters. Or how we discover ever more of our parents in ourselves as we age. Not yet 30, Wood handles all of these themes with remarkable insight, empathy and grace. But as her title suggests, Wood's real subject is time, and how it inexorably weathers us much as it does Pearl's house--itself a character. In a novel where the three protagonists gradually take shape through the many chapters devoted to each of them, the house gets its own chapter, during which Wood echoes the terrifying beauty of the middle section of Woolf's To the Lighthouse--in which another crumbling house underscores how quickly time passes.” ―Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“Wood's finely wrought collection has touches of a benign Angela Carter and recalls the playful yet political transmogrifications of Atwood and Byatt.” ―The Guardian on DIVING BELLES

“The magic is always embedded, not only in familiar stories from folklore, but in the personal myths of the characters' lives. Thus, there is a quiet realism to even the most extraordinary events.” ―Minneapolis Star Tribune on DIVING BELLES

“Sensory, haunting and somewhat literally haunted, this novel tackles the big subjects--belonging, mortality, love--with quiet grace and intimate focus . . . Written from the points of view of all three female characters, the novel explores quintessential questions of relationship, growing up and survival. As in the river that rages through the story, though, the true vitality lies beneath the surface of Wood's exquisite and poetic writing . . . A luminous modern fairy tale.” ―Kirkus Reviews

With beautifully descriptive language and I don't mean in a flowery ...
By Angela
It's surreal and eerie, a hard and gnawing read at times . The three main characters are weathering their personal storms as well as the constant rain in this place somewhere in rural England It's a quiet story in a way, except for the river. There is an intensity in the thoughts and memories of the characters as well as the rain and the snow storms.

The story begins with Pearl who is trying to get out of the river, as her daughter Ada spreads her ashes . Ada hasn't seen her mother for thirteen years and returns to this isolated place where she grew up to scatter her mother's ashes and sell the old dilapidated house . The story is told through three distinct points of view : Pearl , yes even though she's dead , is alive and well in spirit and is here to tell us her story and there's Ada and her six year old daughter Pepper who owned my heart . With beautifully descriptive language and I don't mean in a flowery way , Lucy Wood makes you hear and see that river , feel the rain and the dampness and believe that Pearl is right there .

It's about mother - daughter relationships , love that is genuine even though it doesn't always seem so , discovering one's self when it seems you are lost. Just so impressive how Wood moves us back and forth through the minds of Pearl, Ada, and Pepper, connecting past and present and linking them through love , hardship, birds , and of course the river .

It was 4.5 stars for me .

Quietly intimate, gets under your skin, with maybe too much weather
By A Reader
The writing here is quiet, intimate, sometimes disturbing. It gets under your skin. There is lots of rain and snow and lots and lots of water, unrelenting, and the book sometimes sags under the weight of it. Not much happens here but I think the writer shows promise. She captures the quiet dynamics of women: mother to daughter, from one generation to the next, and something of a vague ghost story -- unexplained -- hidden inside of it. I tired of the many, many metaphors and similes, and I tired of the snow and rain and water, but I was drawn in. I'd give this maybe a 3.5 (I rounded up, which I generally don't do). It's not for everybody, but if you enjoy stories of quiet intimacy, with lovely language (except for the overdone metaphors), set somewhere in England (I assume), with truthful, lonely characters looking to connect, and don't need a plot, or much of an ending, you might like this one.

Weathering and its author Lucy Wood had potential, but to me it was never reached.
By Laura at 125Pages
Original review @ 125Pages.com

Weathering sounds so amazing. Three generations trapped in a small town. A ghost trapped in a river, her drifter daughter returning to town with her daughter. Swirling, almost magical landscapes. I was so excited to read it. But sadly it was less than stellar. Pearl the ghost was just kind of there, not haunting, not comforting, just a wet footprint left here and there. Ada the daughter, a luckless mother who drags her daughter Pepper from one bad job and relationship after the other. Pepper the youngest member of the family is a precocious girl who is painted as wise above her years.

The problem with Weathering is in the characters. Pearl is just there as a dripping ghost, occasionally interjecting her confusion but not adding any real depth. Ada is very selfish and her mothering made me cringe. She takes her daughter from pillar to post with no real thought behind it. They move into a crumbling and literally rotting house with no heat and she occasionally tries to pick it up but basically leaves it a dangerous mess. And Pepper is portrayed in a manner that implies she should be sassy but it just comes across as bratty.

The world built was so-so, no specific country or area was ever stated so it could have been set anywhere which led to some confusion. The town was painted with broad strokes so it was hard to envision. The pacing was also not all there as it would jump all of the sudden. The plot was also lacking as there was nothing to achieve or conclusion to reach. It just seemed to move, jerk, then stop.

Weathering and its author Lucy Wood had potential, but to me it was never reached. I know some people love these nebulous stories but I am not one of them. I enjoy plot and tension and character development. And to me Weathering was lacking.

I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Taking Anbar: A Frontline Account of the Hunt for Iraq's Lethal Insurgency, by Michael Gifford

“There are two types of people in the military: administrators and operators. Administrators make themselves look busy. Operators get shit done.”

In this thought-provoking, politically incorrect book on how the first year of the Iraq War was really fought, Taking Anbar explores the absolute disbelief, sadness, humor, and rage of a First World army in a Third World conflict.

And while it has plenty of what you’d expect in a counter-insurgency campaign, it’s what you don’t expect that shocks most readers: just how little thought military leadership put into life and death decisions, and how regular joes continually stepped up to do the impossible in the brutal fight for Anbar Province following the 2003 fall of Baghdad.

Praised for its personal and often jaw-dropping descriptions of initial combat operations in the now-infamous cities of Ramadi, Fallujah and Hit, Taking Anbar is the chronicle of the 94th Military Police Company’s nearly two-year deployment from citizen to soldier and back again. Recipient of the U.S. Army’s Valorous Unit Award, the 94th found itself in nearly every major tactical mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The book describes, in often raw and unexpected detail, the military’s lethal contest to bring Anbar under control after the war’s official end. From the high profile counter-IED and convoy escort missions you’ve seen in the news, to the quieter work with Special Forces and intelligence teams few would ever experience until now, the 94th bore witness to a number of OIF’s most significant operations and outcomes. An interesting take on how decisions are made—and often not made—in a war against a determined insurgency, it’s poised to be one of the most definitive books on the Iraq War.

Written by Soldier of Fortune contributing writer and former US Army military police officer Michael Gifford, proceeds from Taking Anbar will help fund OnBehalf.org, an all-volunteer nonprofit that offers financial support to combat wounded troops of Iraq & Afghanistan.

About the Author
An upstate New York native, Mike barely squeaked out an undergraduate degree from Union College in 1997, and was commissioned as an Army officer through Siena College's ROTC program the same year. In late 2003, he left a soul-crushing career in Boston's financial sector and headed to Iraq with New Hampshire's own 94th Military Police Company, with the next 22 months of his life serving as the basis for Taking Anbar. After separating from the military in 2005, he founded OnBehalf.org, a five-star, all-volunteer nonprofit that looks to provide funds and services to wounded vets. Now with over a decade of experience working in the security field, Mike currently lives in Los Angeles, California. An avid sportsman who enjoys the beaches and mountains of SoCal, he also adores bashing ill-considered leadership and national policy decisions in his Taking Anbar blog, Twitter and Facebook pages.

Riveting account of one man's tour as a Platoon leader in a Military Police Co. in combat.
By James P. Hanebury
Taking Anbar is an individual account of a platoon leader’s time in Iraq and the problems he encountered there not the least of which was his own Chain of Command. The book takes Cpt Gifford and the men of the 94th MP Co, a reserve unit, from New England to the worst province in Iraq; Anbar. It paints a picture of the problems encountered by the platoon lead by Cpt Gifford and how he and his troops were able to overcome them. It is a story that I am familiar with, from the disorganized convoys, lack of good intel, battle plans, and problems with vehicles and supply. As a Senior NCO in the Military Police Corps with my service spanning 22 years I had to overcome most of the problems which the 94th encountered. Fortunately most of these were in Europe not in a combat zone. My service in Vietnam did give me insight into the problems which were encountered in convoy operations. Taking Anbar highlights what can be done with good leadership, thinking outside the lines, and just common sense. Cpt. Gifford’s comments on SECDEF Rumsfeld’s reliance on missiles, air power, and other high tech solutions were on the money, as was his final thought that the only way to win the current war we are engaged in is meeting the enemy face to face and occupying the killing ground after the battle. It’s been that way since armies began to fight and will continue until there are no more wars. Great book and should be required reading for anyone studying Military Police Operations and small unit leadership.

Hearing from someone that actually participated in the briefings, and his obvious disbelief in those same briefings gives those of us below a little more faith in the religion of "common sense."

A great primer on the second Iraq war
By F. Kuhne
I've read Taking Anbar twice now. Aside from a few editorial issues, I highly recommend you read this book if you are concerned about how we as a nation prosecute any conflicts we face in the future and how we think about and treat our troops in the process.

The author reinforced my high opinion of the vast majority of our troops and my questioning of the thinking at the top levels of government and the military command structure by providing real life examples of bravery and of insufficient planning and leadership.

One thing I didn't expect to come away with, based on how it had been reported here throughout the war and the nation building phase, was a sense of the courage of many everyday Iraqis in various roles that helped our armed forces and their nation in the midst of a chaotic and complex situation.

If you are looking for realpolitik, you won't find it here. However, if you are looking for some insight into the every day challenges, triumphs and failures of the war in Iraq, this is a great read.

Last, I'd like to mention that the author didn't sit on his hands when he got back home safely. He and several of his comrades in arms started a highly respectable charity named OnBehalf to continue their leadership role in support of our troops. I am, as of this writing, in no way affiliated with the group other than donating to it because I believe in their mission and ethics. You can find out more at their website. I'd post it here but Amazon won't let me.
