SVH #43(Hard Choices)

I love all Sweet Valley books and I've read most of the books from all the series'. But this isn't one of the better books. I would still recommend it though to collectors of the SVH series as most are not in print anymore and who knows the books might become worth a bit of money sooner or later. The ending where Enid and her grandmother make up after their fight is good though. It almost made me cry cuz the way it was worded was so sweet.

Lusty blonde scout captain finds her progenitors. Adventure and romance!

Who cannot love a beautiful blonde 6-foot tall scoutship captain, especially when she was remade and improved by the elder species that "planted" the human race? And the AI in her Brainship was once her.... better not spoil the story.

Caryn is a famous scout ship explorer who has inspired a famous video series and is recognized everywhere. Being a lusty woman bottled up on a small scout ship is alos a problem, and she sure knows how to let off steam when in port. Then she discovers a mystery. Certain artifacts are found on worlds that show a pattern of being touched by an advanced alien race. She is bound to follow the path of those worlds and try to discover the meaning and the message of those artifacts. Can't say more without spoiling the story.

This should be a five star story, but the author needs some editing toward the latter parts. Ignore those and you will enjoy this immensely.

Surprising, Delightful, Cliff-Hanging Page Turner

CARYN took me by surprise. I don't usually read SciFi which I think is known for intergalactic battles, but a friend of mine urged me to give this a try. I'm so glad I did. It was so much fun! First of all, what a hoot reading a story spoken in the first person by a beautiful woman while knowing that it was written by a man. You get the manly author looking through feminine eyes and yet telling it as (I would imagine) a man would tell. In the past, my favorite author has probably been Jane Austen because of her detailed characterizations. This one told just as much but none of that dilly dallying. There was action. The story moved at a clip with lots of things going on. OMG, what events! And what "futuristic" ideas that make so much sense. I definitely can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Spell check would not have corrected the errors.

I'm not sure about writing a review for this book. Spell check would not have corrected the errors as it was full of grammar errors (there, their, they're; your, you're; are, or) and punctuation errors (no commas). But I liked the characters. Ordinarily I would have been so irritated with the errors that I would have stopped reading and deleted the book. But I liked the story. I liked the plot enough to find out how it all would end. It was a short story but I wouldn't mind reading more about the characters. I just hope the author learns more about grammar and punctuation.

Amy has the potential to become a good writer. I loved the cover. The story and setting held my interest. Unfortunately, there were many basic grammatical errors. If Amy either improved in that area or hired a good editor I would welcome another novel. There were too many characters who whined too often, but that could be easily corrected.

I suggest that this writer would gain a lot by visiting kboards, writer's café on a regular basis. It isn't my intention to be very critical with this review. I'm trying to be encouraging rather than the alternative.

Almost passed this book up and so glad I didn't. I would have missed a great story with real feeling characters filled with hurt, love, humor and mystery. And of course Twinkle! Looking forward to Amy's next book. Great read

In this book Jessica is furious that Jeremy is days away from marrying Sue. Jessica tries every trick up her sleeve to stop the wedding and Jeremy finally decides to tell Sue the truth, that he has no feelings for her, and he wants to cancel the wedding.

Everything goes to plan until Sue gets bad news that she has the same rare blood disease that killed her mother. Sue tells Jeremy that she only has three years left to live. Jeremy is so upset by the news, that he feels that he has to marry Sue.

When Jessica hears the news, she decides that she must find a way to stop the wedding, bad news or no bad news, Jessica wants Jeremy all to herself.

the best book i have ever read

The best book that I have read all year has to be Left at the Altar by Kate William .One of the reasons is because the book is like a mystery but then it turns into romance then back to a mystery. The next thing is the details of the story turns out the way you don't want it to! It's like somebody's going to kill somebody but that person kills them self instead. The final reason I like this book is the description of the story they explain everything of every detail so you would understand it better. Let me give you a brief summary of the book. The main characters are Elizabeth, Jessica, Sue, and Jeremy. Elizabeth and Jessica are the two twin sisters, and Jeremy and sue are the couple that supposed to get married. Until one day Elizabeth catches Jessica and Jeremy kissing. But poor sue doesn't know a thing. Then one day any old regular day Sue got a tragic letter saying that she has cancer. But Jessica gets stubborn and won't let Jeremy get married. So Jeremy has only one choice, should he or should he no?. I think that every body should read this good but tragic mystery.

An extraordinary book with extraordinary characters - I loved it

This book made a tremendous impact on me. The vivid portrayal of Pigpie (and her gaucy thighs) is something I will never forget. The author's gift for inventive descriptions stunned me – ‘Marlboro exhaust billowed from her lips” - but this story is filled with wonderfully original observations, too many to mention really but I wanted to say anyway.

At times the energy here took my breath away. What characters I met, tender and true and extraordinary. I don’t analyse books – I don’t know how to - but I do know what I like, and I know excellent writing when I see it. And creative genius in its many guises. Which is what this is, to my mind - a work of genius. I loved it.

I love everything about it

This is "real" literature! I love everything about it, especially the opportunity to look into the mind of a truly unique character. The author's ability to construct what I'll describe as matchless, clever descriptions is astonishing, and there's humour and wit, too! And characterization of Abel is excellent. I feel like I know him so well. The subject of savant syndrome is a thought-provoking one and I was happy to become acquainted with it. Overall, I found the plot and development of the story skillfully crafted. Regarding the main character, the reader feels all the struggles and triumphs endured are his own, and lives through the growth and progress of his life, in almost a personal way, because it's easy to identify and because the writing is so beautifully vivid and flawless. I relish every single word -- captivating, and sheer brilliance in the author.

Abel’s voice is unique and consistent and compelling. The dialogue is so original that I can’t remember coming across anything like it except in real life. The story is a slow burn, at times overly detailed, but the connection to the narrator kept me reading and the ending was satisfying. This is quality writing.

Short Summary:

Raised by a Vampire in a secret society of Witches, Shifters, and Elves, Charlotte finds that she is the freak in her world of magic and wonder. When she stands before an army of impossible obstacles, the likelihood of survival in this coming-of-age modern fairy tale is slim, resulting in a war between light and darkness.

My Review:

I finished this book almost a week ago and I've just been beyond baffled on what to say about it. There were just as many good ideas,characters and interesting plot developments as there were bored-to-tears, that doesn't even make sense and why, oh why are we still reading about this moments. I thought if maybe I sat on writing my review that things would somehow become clearer and I would instinctively know what to put down in words, but I don't. I honestly have never had to try so hard to make a review happen. I mean, seriously, I usually just wing it and hope it flies.

Okay... deep breath...

This novel had a lot of moving parts in it which almost seemed to destract rather than enhance. There were a multitude of creatures, with some of them showing up half-way through the book, making me question if it was truly necessary for them to even be introduced. In a way, I understand that the author was trying to add more 'magic to the magical world' but it just seemed like overkill, even if the creatures were kind of cool.

This book was very.... dare I say it... A.D.D. Or better yet, almost like a three year old who is on a constant sugar high roller coaster with all the ups, downs and temper tantrums in between.

The characters were interesting due to the nature of the actual beings while somehow remaining so very one-dimensional. And to be honest, the whole "father-turned-insta-love-can't-live-without-you" relationship thing had me pretty grossed out. It was an inconsistency at best, and at worst, ruined 99% of the romance. It was a pretty big yuck factor. Also, another inconsistency that really annoyed me was that at first, vampires completely drain their kills and don't do multiple feedings as well as it says they can't survive on animal blood and then bam! Fast forward and we have a coven of vamps living on animal blood until Charlotte somehow becomes a one stop-shop all you can drink buffet.

I don't know, it just seemed so very off to me and most of the book was all about the weird lust between daddy vamp and Charlotte where I would have preferred to see more of the battle between the vamps and the fae. Oh, and it was definitely on the very 'young adult' side of the genre with the writing although the author pushed for a more mature, dark side that never really came through

So, in a nutshell... oh, who am I kidding? I could barely put my thoughts down about this one let alone sum it up in a sentence.

I found this book to be quite refreshing. It was everything that I looked for in my reading, but with twists that were unexpected and exhilarating. I loved the fact that the vampires didn't sparkle, and did exactly what vampire should do, which is be a vampire. Shayne didn't try to make the vampires attractive to teenage girls, but they still seemed to be. I have always been attracted to the concept of immortal beings that are dark and misunderstood, but maybe don't really want to be understood. Shayne presented this concept in a brand new light. I have read numerous books on vampires and supernatural beings but I found this one to be the most unique out of all of them.

The imagery presented in this book is brilliant, I felt like I was in the Occult City with the characters in the book. The main character Charlotte was dynamic and became a little heroine in the end even if at times she was a bit of a damsel in distress. She knew how to hold her own, but she still liked the help of her love Valek. The only thing that really bugged me in the story was the premise of Valek being Charlotte's fatherly figure and then becoming a love interest. I soon moved past this little quirk because I felt that the rest of the plot made up for it. I also figured that this was just another one of those unique aspects of this book that I hadn't seen in others.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am eagerly waiting for the next one. Will you join the Occult City?

OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS begins with a vampire finding a human infant left by a fountain in Prague. Instead of his normal reaction, he takes the baby into his home and raises her as his own daughter. Now Charlotte is nineteen and she knows only The Occult City, where she and her guardian, the vampire Valek, live. Charlotte is mostly content with her life, until she realizes her childish love for Valek has transformed into a more adult version. Now the Light is threatening all Charlotte holds dear and she must find a way to save herself and her world. OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS uses a lot of the standard / traditional mythos regarding vampires, witches, and fae. With alternating points of view, it can be difficult at times to stick with the story, but the plot is definitely interesting. I was put off by the fact Charlotte was in love with the vampire who raised her, effectively creating a pseudo-incestuous feel to the story whether intentional or not. While OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS didn’t leave me wanting to read the subsequent novels, it was compelling enough for me to finish.
