End of the Tunnel, by Jamaal Deshonte Dobson

In many ways, we are trapped inside of a deep dark tunnel. Some are trapped in a dead end job with no vision of promotion or better employment, or a low income environment. Others are trapped in a relationship afraid to be alone, or trapped alone afraid of the risks of emotional attachments. Many of us are trapped in the phasade of “The Dream” i.e. Fortune and Fame. This book is intended to remind us of that which we have long forgotten… Ourselves, our humanity, and our morality. I wrote this book as my personal plea for us to work together for the restoration of morals and humanity. For many centuries our species has been drifting away from that which we originally defined; Loyalty, Integrity, Honor, and Respect. If we work together, and help one another to do better, the accomplishments will be unmatchable. We are our greatest strength and our most devastating weakness. Only we can make the world a better place.

Give Take Be, by Carol Smith

Carol Crawford Smith has lived many lives. Accepted into the prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem at the age of fourteen, she was swept into a world of glamour, bright lights, and globe-trotting adventure. Her loves have been just as luminous: from her childhood sweetheart to her big-city romances, she has sought throughout her life to give and receive love.

But with the excitement has come heartbreak. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she loses not only her ability to dance but, in time, even the freedom to go out and about on her own. Having her home and dance studio featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is a blessing, but her struggles are far from over. Through it all, however, her passion for her true loves—her sons, her faith, and her desire to make the world a better place—only strengthens.

Give Take Be is the story of a life of breathtaking highs and catastrophic lows; it is about a woman, the lives she has touched, and those that have touched her in return. It is a story of overcoming crushing adversity by holding on to the simple determination to Give, Take, and Be.

“Sometimes you embrace a book…and sometimes a book embraces you. Give Take Be takes us on a warm and personal voyage of the very talented Carol Crawford Smith from being a young professional dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem to overcoming the unexpected fears of MS. Carol’s courage and talent, her faith and beliefs carry her through. She won a home makeover and the hearts of all in this community. She no longer physically dances but her heart waltzes to a beautiful tune of always…always…always summer.” Nikki Giovanni, Poet

"Carol Crawford Smith demonstrates her courage and integrity in telling her truths. The details of her life present a picture of a person with a ravenous thirst for living, loving, being loved, and giving. The title “Give Take Be,” a familiar term to ballet dancers, is given a new meaning in the book. As Carol paints a portrait of her life, one experiences her giving spirit – her willingness to give her time, share her talents, and most importantly, her willingness to give and share her love."

Passionate and Personal Writing Among the Very Best!
By James Jones
I first met Carol Crawford Smith in church when she walked into Asbury United Methodist one glorious Sunday morning. She was strikingly beautiful, elegant and poised. She had the look and presence that makes you sit up a little straighter as you adjust your tie. She was a dancer. I would go on to experience her wit, charm and giving spirit. All of Carol’s gifts are found in her writing; particularly in “Give Take Be.” This marvelous gem of a book is forthright, open and unabashedly appealing. Be prepared to be inspired, to be enlivened, to be moved. It is all here in Carol’s remarkable life and memoir.

Review
“Far from the Madding Crowd is the first of Thomas Hardy’s great novels, and the first to sound the tragic note
for which his fiction is best remembered.”
-Margaret Drabble

About the Author

Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) was born in Dorset, England, son of a stonemason. Though a gifted student, he was unable to afford to attend university. He was apprenticed to an architect at age sixteen and worked in London for several years before returning to Dorset and dedicating himself to writing novels and poems.

Chapter I Description of Farmer Oak—An Incident

When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth spread till they were within an unimportant distance of his ears, his eyes were reduced to chinks, and diverging wrinkles appeared round them, extending upon his countenance like the rays in a rudimentary sketch of the rising sun.

His Christian name was Gabriel, and on working days he was a young man of sound judgment, easy motions, proper dress, and general good character. On Sundays he was a man of misty views, rather given to postponing, and hampered by his best clothes and umbrella: upon the whole, one who felt himself to occupy morally that vast middle space of Laodicean neutrality which lay between the Communion people of the parish and the drunken section,—that is, he went to church, but yawned privately by the time the congregation reached the Nicene creed, and thought of what there would be for dinner when he meant to be listening to the sermon. Or, to state his character as it stood in the scale of public opinion, when his friends and critics were in tantrums, he was considered rather a bad man; when they were pleased, he was rather a good man; when they were neither, he was a man whose moral colour was a kind of pepper-and-salt mixture.

Since he lived six times as many working-days as Sundays, Oak’s appearance in his old clothes was most peculiarly his own—the mental picture formed by his neighbours in imagining him being always dressed in that way. He wore a low-crowned felt hat, spread out at the base by tight jamming upon the head for security in high winds, and a coat like Dr. Johnson’s,4 his lower extremities being encased in ordinary leather leggings and boots emphatically large, affording to each foot a roomy apartment so constructed that any wearer might stand in a river all day long and know nothing of damp—their maker being a conscientious man who endeavoured to compensate for any weakness in his cut by unstinted dimension and solidity.

Mr. Oak carried about him, by way of watch, what may be called a small silver clock; in other words, it was a watch as to shape and intention, and a small clock as to size. This instrument being several years older than Oak’s grandfather, had the peculiarity of going either too fast or not at all. The smaller of its hands, too, occasionally slipped round on the pivot, and thus, though the minutes were told with precision, nobody could be quite certain of the hour they belonged to. The stopping peculiarity of his watch Oak remedied by thumps and shakes, and he escaped any evil consequences from the other two defects by constant comparisons with and observations of the sun and stars, and by pressing his face close to the glass of his neighbours’ windows, till he could discern the hour marked by the green-faced timekeepers within. It may be mentioned that Oak’s fob being difficult of access, by reason of its somewhat high situation in the waistband of his trousers (which also lay at a remote height under his waistcoat), the watch was as a necessity pulled out by throwing the body to one side, compressing the mouth and face to a mere mass of ruddy flesh on account of the exertion, and drawing up the watch by its chain, like a bucket from a well.

But some thoughtful persons, who had seen him walking across one of his fields on a certain December morning—sunny and exceedingly mild—might have regarded Gabriel Oak in other aspects than these. In his face one might notice that many of the hues and curves of youth had tarried on to manhood: there even remained in his remoter crannies some relics of the boy. His height and breadth would have been sufficient to make his presence imposing, had they been exhibited with due consideration. But there is a way some men have, rural and urban alike, for which the mind is more responsible than flesh and sinew: it is a way of curtailing their dimensions by their manner of showing them. And from a quiet modesty that would have become a vestal, which seemed continually to impress upon him that he had no great claim on the world’s room, Oak walked unassumingly, and with a faintly perceptible bend, yet distinct from a bowing of the shoulders. This may be said to be a defect in an individual if he depends for his valuation more upon his appearance than upon his capacity to wear well, which Oak did not.

He had just reached the time of life at which “young” is ceasing to be the prefix of “man” in speaking of one. He was at the brightest period of masculine growth, for his intellect and his emotions were clearly separated: he had passed the time during which the influence of youth indiscriminately mingles them in the character of impulse, and he had not yet arrived at the stage wherein they become united again, in the character of prejudice, by the influence of a wife and family. In short, he was twenty-eight, and a bachelor.

The field he was in this morning sloped to a ridge called Norcombe Hill. Through a spur of this hill ran the highway between Emminster and Chalk-Newton. Casually glancing over the hedge, Oak saw coming down the incline before him an ornamental spring waggon, painted yellow and gaily marked, drawn by two horses, a waggoner walking alongside bearing a whip perpendicularly. The waggon was laden with household goods and window plants, and on the apex of the whole sat a woman, young and attractive. Gabriel had not beheld the sight for more than half a minute, when the vehicle was brought to a standstill just beneath his eyes.

“The tailboard of the waggon is gone, Miss,” said the waggoner.

“Then I heard it fall,” said the girl, in a soft, though not particularly low voice. “I heard a noise I could not account for when we were coming up the hill.”

“I’ll run back.”

“Do,” she answered.

The sensible horses stood perfectly still, and the waggoner’s steps sank fainter and fainter in the distance.

The girl on the summit of the load sat motionless, surrounded by tables and chairs with their legs upwards, backed by an oak settle, and ornamented in front by pots of geraniums, myrtles, and cactuses, together with a caged canary—all probably from the windows of the house just vacated. There was also a cat in a willow basket, from the partly-opened lid of which she gazed with half-closed eyes, and affectionately surveyed the small birds around.

The handsome girl waited for some time idly in her place, and the only sound heard in the stillness was the hopping of the canary up and down the perches of its prison. Then she looked attentively downwards. It was not at the bird, nor at the cat; it was at an oblong package tied in paper, and lying between them. She turned her head to learn if the waggoner were coming. He was not yet in sight; and her eyes crept back to the package, her thoughts seeming to run upon what was inside it. At length she drew the article into her lap, and untied the paper covering; a small swing looking-glass was disclosed, in which she proceeded to survey herself attentively. She parted her lips and smiled.

It was a fine morning, and the sun lighted up to a scarlet glow the crimson jacket she wore, and painted a soft lustre upon her bright face and dark hair. The myrtles, geraniums, and cactuses packed around her were fresh and green, and at such a leafless season they invested the whole concern of horses, waggon, furniture, and girl with a peculiar vernal charm. What possessed her to indulge in such a performance in the sight of the sparrows, blackbirds, and unperceived farmer who were alone its spectators,—whether the smile began as a factitious one, to test her capacity in that art,—nobody knows; it ended certainly in a real smile. She blushed at herself, and seeing her reflection blush, blushed the more.

The change from the customary spot and necessary occasion of such an act—from the dressing hour in a bedroom to a time of travelling out of doors—lent to the idle deed a novelty it did not intrinsically possess. The picture was a delicate one. Woman’s prescriptive infirmity had stalked into the sunlight, which had clothed it in the freshness of an originality. A cynical inference was irresistible by Gabriel Oak as he regarded the scene, generous though he fain would have been. There was no necessity whatever for her looking in the glass. She did not adjust her hat, or pat her hair, or press a dimple into shape, or do one thing to signify that any such intention had been her motive in taking up the glass. She simply observed herself as a fair product of Nature in the feminine kind, her thoughts seeming to glide into far-off though likely dramas in which men would play a part—vistas of probable triumphs—the smiles being of a phase suggesting that hearts were imagined as lost and won. Still, this was but conjecture, and the whole series of actions was so idly put forth as to make it rash to assert that intention had any part in them at all.

The waggoner’s steps were heard returning. She put the glass in the paper, and the whole again into its place.

When the waggon had passed on, Gabriel withdrew from his point of espial, and descending into the road, followed the vehicle to the turnpike-gate some way beyond the bottom of the hill, where the object of his contemplation now halted for the payment of toll. About twenty steps still remained between him and the gate, when he heard a dispute. It was a difference concerning twopence between the persons with the waggon and the man at the toll-bar.

“Mis’ess’s niece is upon the top of the things, and she says that’s enough that I’ve offered ye, you great miser, and she won’t pay any more.” These were the waggoner’s words.

“Very well; then mis’ess’s niece can’t pass,” said the turnpike-keeper, closing the gate.

Oak looked from one to the other of the disputants, and fell into a reverie. There was something in the tone of twopence remarkably insignificant. Threepence had a definite value as money—it was an appreciable infringement on a day’s wages, and, as such, a higgling matter; but twopence——“Here,” he said, stepping forward and handing twopence to the gatekeeper; “let the young woman pass.” He looked up at her then; she heard his words, and looked down.

Gabriel’s features adhered throughout their form so exactly to the middle line between the beauty of St. John and the ugliness of Judas Iscariot, as represented in a window of the church he attended, that not a single lineament could be selected and called worthy either of distinction or notoriety. The red-jacketed and dark-haired maiden seemed to think so too, for she carelessly glanced over him, and told her man to drive on. She might have looked her thanks to Gabriel on a minute scale, but she did not speak them; more probably she felt none, for in gaining her a passage he had lost her her point, and we know how women take a favour of that kind.

The gatekeeper surveyed the retreating vehicle. “That’s a handsome maid,” he said to Oak.

“But she has her faults,” said Gabriel.

“True, farmer.”

“And the greatest of them is—well, what it is always.”

“Beating people down? ay, ’tis so.”

“O no.”

“What, then?”

Gabriel, perhaps a little piqued by the comely traveller’s indifference, glanced back to where he had witnessed her performance over the hedge, and said, “Vanity.”

Ugly, Careless Edition with Typos
By Quentin Compson
A warning about this edition. I am 20 pages in and have spotted two egregious and random typos (a wild exclamation point in the middle of a word; an odd "WII" instead of a word.) In an English language classic! And printed in the U.S., no less. If you care about things like this, do not buy. I wanted the Penguin or the Oxford, but they were sold out. I was right to be wary of a shameless movie tie-in edition.

Amazing Classic
By Margaret
Amazing classic book. I enjoy this movie-tie in version very much. Beautiful cover and it helps that I loved the movie. The story is about an independent young lady and the three diverse men who love her. Every character in this book is interesting and so well developed. The character I enjoyed the most was Bathsheba. A great female character in all of classic literature. She is a great character even for modern times. The language is beautiful. The story is amazingly beautiful and complex.

Classic tale that is a very good and satisfying read!
By cdaofga
Lovely classic tale - very Victorian and British. If you love Jane Austen you will love this Thomas Hardy classic novel. One Heroine, two men vying for her love and attention. I could not put it down - read it in two days on a very busy schedule. I would highly recommend it as one of the easier classic books to read with a great plot and lots of twists and turmoil and angst.

Millersville, by Brendan Detzner

The Illinois Youth Center in Millersville is a maximum security prison for teenage girls. There are no newspapers allowed in the facility, no internet, no TV news. No way to tell that something in the world on the other side of the fence has gone very wrong. At least not at first.

Brendan Detzner's short fiction has appeared in Podcastle, Pseudopod, Chizine, One Buck Horror, Tales to Terrify, the Exigencies anthology from Dark House Press, and many other venues. He is the author of two story collections, "Scarce Resources" and "Beasts".

Millersville by Brendan Detzner
By Mariza van Wyk
First a big thank you to author Brendan Detzner, for giving me this opportunity to review Millersville for an honest review. My rating is 4 stars!

Wow! This book sucked me in from the beginning and made me think of the history of Alcatraz Island Prison, Francisco Bay, where they had to close the penitentiary as it cost much more to operate than other prisons in 1963.

What this book is about?
A maximum prison for teenage girls on its way to destruction. The states’ cheques bounce, no money is coming in, food rations gets less for prisoners, the staff get suspicious and resign. Security cameras are broken and that means….nobody is watching… And that means anything can happen.

A great read and I would recommend this for everyone!

Unnerving and timely - read it!
By RYLAND
I received an Advance Reader’s Copy for Brendan Detzner’s novel, Millersville, in return for an honest review. So here it is, with no real spoilers to speak of:
I actually ended up liking this much more than expected. The first chapter pulled me in, I was kind of interested in where Queen was going, but then we headed into this situation at a prison for girls that seemed kind of mundane at first. I was like what am I reading here? So I just pressed on to find out when we’d get back to Queen and to try to puzzle out where Queen was related to the prison story. But the last half was good. It’s a slow build to a theme that sticks with you afterwards. Not a book that gets in your face about anything, until it does. Fitting that, after the end of the novel, there’s a link to a site about prisoners’ rights. The novel has a realism traced with subtle discomfort to its pacing and reveals.
It was hard for me to get into the setting at times, mostly in the middle, because of how sparse the writing is, though after reading one of his short story collections Beasts, I did expect a sparse, sort of bare noir style, though I had expected more horror. By the end of Millersville, I feel like the tone and style of the novel fits with the story as a whole. I’d say stick through to the end. It’s not a book full of baggage or long description that will take up your reading time (though I’m also a fan of books like that, I do like some meaty description), and by the end it presents a story with clear relevance to our troubled times. There is horror, but not the grotesque or constant suspense I might’ve have expected based on some of Brendan’s short stories. This is a more subtle, messed-up real life horror.
Oh, and I should point out, in the ARC I received there were a few spelling errors that poked at me here and there. All rather minor, I shrugged them off. Maybe the author fixed those in the current edition, or will do so in the future. Despite that, I still recommend giving this a read. Worth both the price and the troubling unease it will leave you with.

I love it when a book has the power to move me to tears or great joy-Millersville did both
By Ami A.
Disclaimer: I was very fortunate to receive an ARC (advance readers copy) and all that was requested of me was an honest review.

This is the second book (the first being Beasts which I loved) I have read by Brendan Detzner and I must say that there is as much difference in these two books as day and night. This man is versatile beyond anything I could have imagined. So, if you read and didn't care for Beasts you should not make a decision about reading Millersville based on your reaction to Beasts.

First don't be afraid to read this because of spoilers. My reviews are always based on how I like or dislike the book and why not a book report that is just a summary of the book. I don't like to read any details about a book I am going to read so that's how I write them.

Now to my review of Millersville: The main characters in Millersville were well rounded and I felt like I was right there with them through much of the book. Three of them I admired very much. Their stresses and fears made my heart pound and their moments of happiness and triumphs sometimes made me cry. This story could be true and someday may be. I hope not but I am a realist so I know that bad things do happen and the series of events in Millersville seem extremely possible and flow in a way that I could see as almost inevitable. On the other hand, a few things occurred that completely and totally shocked me to my core (they could still, very easily, happen). All together a great read and I hope that you will enjoy it as much it as I did.

Harold knew he couldn't in good conscience accept his orders to Vietnam after advanced Army training. After going home on leave before his scheduled travel to Oakland for shipment to Nam, he goes to San Francisco to seek help with a conscientious objector discharge application. San Francisco in 1968 is a hub of activities against the Vietnam War and a magnet for young people. While A-wol he meets the beautiful Floe, a Canadian, and falls for her like there is no tomorrow. Constant companions, they explore the city together and spend their nights at the Cadillac Hotel. When Floe rejects him, he, in a distraught fog, turns himself over to the Presidio Army Base. He is one among a constant stream of A-wol soldiers, apprehended in the area and sent to the Presidio Detention Center. What he encounters at the Detention Center and Stockade is harassment and cruelty beyond his imagination. He becomes friends with a small group: Tom another conscientious objector applicant, Garvey the wheeler-dealing soldier looking for any angle to facilitate his discharge, Klinker who left the Oakland Base before his Nam shipment, and Dennis the Nam veteran befriended by Klinker while both were A-wol. All are desperately hoping to avoid Nam orders. Their antics on and off the Presidio are comic and poignant. The group often leave the base on weekends: Harold to the dark haired beauty Sandra, Tom to his alluring wife Marilyn, Garvey to the Captain's pottery wife Sharon, and Klinker and Dennis to the enticing college girls. Can they survive the cruelty and absurdity of the Center and avoid going to fight a war they all believe is a mistake and a travesty? Escape From The Presidio is a vivid page turning tale of cruelty and redemption that is filled with memorable characters willing to do anything to avoid Vietnam.

Escape From The Presidio
By nio tavlos
In full disclosure, Donald Riggs Houser & I met 52 years ago in college. We are fraternity brothers & lived in Santa Fe, NM as next door neighbors for 20 of those years. I consider him a brother from another Mother. I love him & his family.

We were in the Army at the same time & both of us filed for conscientious objectors to the Vietnam War. Thankfully neither of us went to Vietnam but, no matter if you went or fought against "the war machine" nobody escaped unscathed!

I didn't know if I could not like his book or even if I could be objective about it. I knew a lot about his Army experience & through the years he would say he was writing an anti war novel. I never thought he would write a book the brother was an engineer for crying out loud!

I'll make this a short review: I could hardly put the book down once I started reading it! Ladies & gentlemen isn't that what a great novel is supposed to do? This story has it all: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, Murder, Suspense, Rage against the Machine, Rage Against all War & Rage Against Man's Inhumanity Against His Fellow Man to name just a few of the issues he weaves into his story.

Sometimes a war must be fought but the Vietnam War was not one of them & as Donald says " Few soldiers survived Nam with no effect if they survived at all. Lives were taken----lives were ruined."

This is an anti-war novel. This is a very, very good book. Well worth the price & well worth to remember that most wars are wrong & worth standing up & saying "HELL NO I WON'T GO!!!"

I am so damn proud of my brother Donald Riggs Houser! Looking forward to his next book "Murder on the Hippie Trail!"

I highly recommend this novel
By john voorhees
This novel is a fast-paced semi-autobiographical account of the author's experiences as an anti-Vietnam activist in the 60's. The dialogue is crisp, taut, and highly believable. As indictment against war of any kind, I feel it is a must read for all young men today. The novel is also a reminder of a time when the draft was mandatory and how it affected a whole generation. I highly recommend this novel.

A New Viet Nam Book with a different slant
By ioanna carlsen
A timely much- needed book about how conscientious objectors were treated in the viet nam period. Most books about viet nam deal with what happens after you get there, this is about what happens when you try to be moral about not going.

Sometimes the women have to pitch and do a man's job. It happened during WWII, but there have been many other times when women stepped up and surprised everyone with their competence and toughness.

A historical novel, set in Australia, Seafaring Women is the story of a ship captain's wife who finds herself widowed in a port far from home. Alice undertakes to finish the voyage her husband started, but all her sailors have abandoned ship for the gold fields, except one aged crew member, Gypsy. They recruit a crew of women who are trying to get away from the misery of life in brothels and bars of Melbourne. Gypsy undertakes to train the crew in how to sail the ship, but he has to hurry because the womens' former "employers" are looking to get their women back. They make it out of Melbourne and manage to overcome calm winds, pirates, and kidnappings. And this is just the first in the Hearts of Oak series.

It's interesting to note that the book is written by a veteran novelist and her son, who loves historical research and once spent some time in Australia. All told, it's a great story, well-told. I can't wait for the next volume.

Loved the overall idea of the book...but...
By R. H.
The Seafaring Women of the Vera B was written by Susan Page Davis and James S. Davis. This is the first book I’ve read by them, but doubt it will be my last.
I’m actually giving this book a 3 ½ star because it’s more than just an “okay” book, but it just doesn’t get to the 4 star realm for me. I love the idea of the book…The captain of the Vera B suddenly dies and they are abandoned by all of the crew members and so the captain’s wife, who is quite capable of taking over the ship, decides her only option is to take on a crew of women from different backgrounds of life and turn them into a crew. I was very excited to read the book because it sounded so intriguing, yet once the book got going…it took all I had to sift through the nautical terminology (which I might add, was explained within the book, but there was just a lot of it) and day by day by day issues that I felt could have been tightened up a bit. BUT the storyline overall was great. There were quite a few characters within the book and that took some getting to know them before I was completely sure who I was reading about. By about 70%, you really can get into the adventure and the suspense of the voyage and understanding the characters. I truly would love to give it a 4 star, but hold off on it just because there tends to be just a bit too much wordiness….great story though!!! If you like a lot of nautical terms and a lot of day to day events on a ship…you will totally enjoy this book! This book will not stop me from reading another book by this author because I see great potential!
I received this book from the author and willingly chose to give my honest review on my own.

Hearty historical adventure with a touch of romance. A great read!
By Amazon Customer
When Alice Packard and the boatswain Gypsy return to the ship after burying the ship’s captain, Alice’s late husband, they find the ship nearly deserted. As they cross the deck, the last four men from a crew of 20 lunge past them, arms laden with loot from the captain’s cabin. Suddenly Alice finds herself across the ocean from her home in Boston, on a ship with no captain, no crew, and very limited funds.
To preserve her husband’s good name, and to do what is best for the Collins Shipping Company of Salem, she determines to procure a crew and continue onward. A search of local taverns reveals that nearly every able-bodied man in town has made a run for the newly discovered gold fields, and she is not the only merchant seaman looking to hire.
After days of searching for her lost crew, and many prayers, she takes what the Lord offers her to run her ship - women. To her passenger list of three women and a young lad, she adds a lady and her maid, a lonely young homeless girl, and a bevy of soiled doves. All must learn the hard work of “manning” the ship if they are to get out of port. Amid hardship, storms, a pirate attack, and being chased by the brothel owner who lost his workers, they pull together in order to sail toward a better life for each of them.
This book has lots of fast paced action, suspense, and high seas adventure with a touch of romance. Wonderful to read a story about mere women who tackle a seemingly insurmountable problem and persevere. The weak grow stronger and the strong learn to lead as they face the dangers of cutthroat men and a wild sea.

Written in a fragmented, first person narrative, and described by some as an urban poem, West End follows the life of a young woman from childhood to early adulthood in a declining area. Enclosed by a darkness that permeates her inner and outer landscape, the narrator experiences recurrent losses. Unable to handle the melancholia that overtakes her, she feels her only choice is to “escape the madness.”

By Beverly Rousseau
The novella has always been one of my favorite forms because it forces a kind of economy in the writer. It takes a good writer to master this form and I believe Noreen Lace has achieved that mastery. Her haunting portrayal of life in a dying mid-western city is spot on. The narrative character internalizes the decay of her environment to devasstating consequences. A lovely little jewel of a book!

I found I easily related to the main character
By Victor J LaForest
Very well written. I found I easily related to the main character. The primary characters are drawn in recognizable images. The emptiness of no kindred souls is masterfully explored. I was surprised that a short work could touch so many of my parts. I give it my highest recommendation.

This is a great read!
By lovilla henkelman
This book grabbed me right from the start! Although fantasy books are not usually my first choice, I found myself caught up in the story immediately. I particularly love the descriptions and vivid imagery the author uses. The characters are distinct personalities, and I came to love them. But there is a deeper meaning in terms of the battle between good and evil. We need each other to survive, and there is a call to unity for strength. The struggle to bond and trust is universal, and the wolves model this to Jess. I anxiously await the continuation of the story. I understand this is the author's first novel, and I sincerely pray it is not her last.

Thought provoking wonderful read
By paula al-saihati
N Z Khan has woven the lives of several families together as she deals with the rights of workers as well as the problems of the Muslims, Christians and Hindus as they try to live together peacefully after India was partitioned. There are not only colorful threads in this tapestry but a very complicated pattern as well. I do hope this becomes a series of books as I'd love to know what happens to the various characters as time goes forward. Bravo N Z Khan on a thought provoking and entertaining book. PBS
