The Seafaring Women of the Vera B (Hearts of Oak Book 1), by Susan Page Davis, James S. Davis

With the ship’s captain dead in Melbourne, Australia, Alice Packard thinks the worst has happened, until she learns the crew has deserted her husband’s ship in favor of the goldfields. Only one old man, Gypsy Deak, sticks by her, but Gypsy alone can’t raise a crew from the depleted population. In desperation, Alice turns to the only source of plentiful workers: the women of Melbourne. In a bold move, she and Gypsy empty a brothel, promising the escaped women a new life. Her all-woman (save one) crew put their backs and hearts into the voyage, but Alice finds training her sailors much harder than she expected. Her faith is tested to the limit. With a cargo to sell, angry bordello and tavern owners in pursuit, pirates to evade, and a mysterious stowaway, the seafaring women of the Vera B. find their escape in question.

About the Author
James Samuel Davis grew up as the oldest of six children in the rugged forestland of central Maine. His parents are a novelist and a retired newspaper editor. Homeschooled from first grade through high school graduation, he has always been an avid student of history and geography. Writing and researching have been a lifelong passion. Add a vivid imagination and an aversion to thinking inside the box (what box?), and you have the beginnings of a new paradigm for fiction writing. James completed an agricultural degree at Bob Jones University, then undertook an agricultural exchange through the University of Minnesota. This included a 4-month internship on a dairy farm in Australia, where he broke his leg in a dirt bike accident while trying to intercept an escaped herd of cattle. His writing credits include articles for Green Magazine and special sections of a daily newspaper. In addition to Australia, he has traveled to China and Alaska, and he made a mission trip to Micronesia in 2012. He resides in rural Travelers Rest, S.C., with his wife and seven children. Susan Page Davis, James’s mom, is the author of more than sixty Christian novels and novellas, which have sold more than 1.5 million copies. Rosie the Riveter had nothing on these women
By Auntie Em
Sometimes the women have to pitch and do a man's job. It happened during WWII, but there have been many other times when women stepped up and surprised everyone with their competence and toughness.

A historical novel, set in Australia, Seafaring Women is the story of a ship captain's wife who finds herself widowed in a port far from home. Alice undertakes to finish the voyage her husband started, but all her sailors have abandoned ship for the gold fields, except one aged crew member, Gypsy. They recruit a crew of women who are trying to get away from the misery of life in brothels and bars of Melbourne. Gypsy undertakes to train the crew in how to sail the ship, but he has to hurry because the womens' former "employers" are looking to get their women back. They make it out of Melbourne and manage to overcome calm winds, pirates, and kidnappings. And this is just the first in the Hearts of Oak series.

It's interesting to note that the book is written by a veteran novelist and her son, who loves historical research and once spent some time in Australia. All told, it's a great story, well-told. I can't wait for the next volume.

Loved the overall idea of the book...but...
By R. H.
The Seafaring Women of the Vera B was written by Susan Page Davis and James S. Davis. This is the first book I’ve read by them, but doubt it will be my last.
I’m actually giving this book a 3 ½ star because it’s more than just an “okay” book, but it just doesn’t get to the 4 star realm for me. I love the idea of the book…The captain of the Vera B suddenly dies and they are abandoned by all of the crew members and so the captain’s wife, who is quite capable of taking over the ship, decides her only option is to take on a crew of women from different backgrounds of life and turn them into a crew. I was very excited to read the book because it sounded so intriguing, yet once the book got going…it took all I had to sift through the nautical terminology (which I might add, was explained within the book, but there was just a lot of it) and day by day by day issues that I felt could have been tightened up a bit. BUT the storyline overall was great. There were quite a few characters within the book and that took some getting to know them before I was completely sure who I was reading about. By about 70%, you really can get into the adventure and the suspense of the voyage and understanding the characters. I truly would love to give it a 4 star, but hold off on it just because there tends to be just a bit too much wordiness….great story though!!! If you like a lot of nautical terms and a lot of day to day events on a ship…you will totally enjoy this book! This book will not stop me from reading another book by this author because I see great potential!
I received this book from the author and willingly chose to give my honest review on my own.

Hearty historical adventure with a touch of romance. A great read!
By Amazon Customer
When Alice Packard and the boatswain Gypsy return to the ship after burying the ship’s captain, Alice’s late husband, they find the ship nearly deserted. As they cross the deck, the last four men from a crew of 20 lunge past them, arms laden with loot from the captain’s cabin. Suddenly Alice finds herself across the ocean from her home in Boston, on a ship with no captain, no crew, and very limited funds.
To preserve her husband’s good name, and to do what is best for the Collins Shipping Company of Salem, she determines to procure a crew and continue onward. A search of local taverns reveals that nearly every able-bodied man in town has made a run for the newly discovered gold fields, and she is not the only merchant seaman looking to hire.
After days of searching for her lost crew, and many prayers, she takes what the Lord offers her to run her ship - women. To her passenger list of three women and a young lad, she adds a lady and her maid, a lonely young homeless girl, and a bevy of soiled doves. All must learn the hard work of “manning” the ship if they are to get out of port. Amid hardship, storms, a pirate attack, and being chased by the brothel owner who lost his workers, they pull together in order to sail toward a better life for each of them.
This book has lots of fast paced action, suspense, and high seas adventure with a touch of romance. Wonderful to read a story about mere women who tackle a seemingly insurmountable problem and persevere. The weak grow stronger and the strong learn to lead as they face the dangers of cutthroat men and a wild sea.
