Gr 8 Up-High school junior Dane has anger management issues. Although he is an excellent student, he is one suspension away from expulsion, and he must spend time with his neighbor Billy D., a boy with Down syndrome, to work off his detentions. What begins as a community-service project slowly turns into real friendship. Both boys have single mothers; Billy wants to find his missing father, but Dane wants nothing to do with his. Billy is obsessed with an atlas full of riddles his father left him and is convinced that they point to his dad's whereabouts. He draws Dane and their friend Seely into solving the mystery, but as they get closer to Billy's father, a sad truth appears about why Billy's mother left the man. Although the story has anger, abuse, and bullying at its core, it never feels heavy-handed, possibly because of the well-realized relationships between characters. Dane and his mother are close and loving even as they drive each other crazy. Billy and Dane's friendship is based on their similarities: they are both fatherless, have tempers, and appreciate cute girls. Dane grows up over the course of the story; he realizes he needs help in controlling his anger and seeks it out. He also gains a girlfriend in Seely and treats her well. That. was. AWESOME

That. was. AWESOME.
I get worried when books get compared to famous authors. The cover on DEAD ENDS says "From the novelist being compared to R.J. Palacio and John Green". Um. Those are big shoes to fill, okay?! Why do they do that?? While I think DEAD ENDS is fabulous and I love it to bits...I don't think it tops John-Green-ish-ness.
The alternate title for this book is: Let's Represent the Minorities!
I do love how well the minorities were represented (they get forgotten a lot in books sometimes). Billy D has Down's syndrome, Seely has two dads, Dane's mother was pregnant at 15, aaaand the list goes on! It's awesome to look at lives from different angles.
Okay, so let's talk about bullying. Dane is a bully. He hits kids...but you know what? He has reasons. I'm not saying they're "good" or "right" reasons! What I'm saying is: Dane isn't a mindless oaf who beats up kids and acts like a loser. He has great school marks. He's going to college. He is super polite and caring to his mother. I love, absolutely LOVE, how this book squashes the whole "bullies are stupid jocks", because no one is shallow. Heeeey, I'm not condoning bullies, either! I'm just saying they're actually people with braincells too.
I'm a sucker for awesome dialogue, and DEAD ENDS sure rules in the witty dialogue category. It's funny! The banter is smooth and natural. I laughed! Peoples, I actually LAUGHED OUT LOUD. One exchange between Billy D and Dane made my mind explode with the awesome and I had to put the book down and just appreciate how talented the author is.
Soooo, what do I want to complain about? Um, nothing. Not a thing. It's not the most mind-blowing book I've ever read, but I had zero problems with it and I think it deserves every shiny corner of it's 5-star sticker.
OH WAIT. I do have one thing to complain about. The ending. Noooooo. Thanks for making me sob.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. I loved learning about people with Down's syndrome and about people who are bullies and about people who are searching for missing dads. It's sweet and sad. It's awesome.

A surprise gem of a novel

This debut by Erin Lange was a pure gem. I didn't expect too much, but it quickly became an engrossing read. I really liked the characters. I liked their quirks, their personalities, their differing senses of loyalty, and their annoying flaws. I liked the plot a lot too, and though the story at times was a bit confusing to follow, it was plenty good enough to warrant a 4.5 to the least. Lange introduces hr protagonists well, as well as the main plotline. She did a good job in keeping me interested, enough to get me to finish the book in one day. I liked the ending, though it was a bit rushed. Highly recommended to YA fans.

A decidedly unusual look at bullying

Take two teen boys and add Down Syndrome, anger management issues, missing fathers and some pretty darn good dialogue, coupled with a ton of geography-related riddles and what do you have? The short answer is this book, but the more complete answer is you have an often funny, very appealing story about Dane and Billy who happen to live across the street from each other. On the surface, they couldn't be more different. Dane is a high-achieving guy who has no clue who his dad is, has serious anger problems and he's one detention away from getting kicked out, losing any chance of going to college and landing in the alternative program where most of the 'crash and burn' kids are. Billy, who just moved across the street with his angry and secretive mother, has Down Syndrome, but can hold his own when it comes to perverse logic or arguing. While he's scared of other kids who have started to bully him, Dane's angry attitude doesn't seem to faze him in the slightest.
When the staff member in charge of discipline notices that Billy has attached himself to Dane, or at least is following him to school, he offers Dane a deal: Be Billy's escort (read bodyguard) and as time progresses, detentions will magically disappear from his record. While Dane's far from wild about the deal, something about the way Billy can turn things around when they're arguing, leads to grudging respect and an odd sort of bond. While he's adamant that he has no desire to learn who his father might be, he's talked into helping Billy decipher the clues his dad left in an atlas. Billy's convinced that if they can solve all of them, they will find his father.
Things get even more interesting when a waify, skateboarding girl named Seely who has not one, but two dads, neither of which are biologically related to her, enters the picture and starts helping them with the puzzles. It doesn't take Dane long to start realizing that she's unlike any girl he's ever met and that there's some attraction growing on both their parts.
It takes a crazy road trip as well as some bonding between Dane and Billy's mothers to start the truth about Billy's dad coming to the surface. By the end of the book, most readers will feel like they were sitting in the back seat during the ride. This is a neat and different look at bullying, how kids get to that point and what happens when they start looking in the figurative mirror. This is another book that deserves a place in most libraries where providing good real-life issue fiction for teens is important.
