103rd Meridian, by Tom Claffey

Gordon Meese believes all mistakes should be corrected, none more egregious than the location of the border between New Mexico and Texas. His meticulous research, coupled with his relentless insistence that the 103rd meridian is the accurate boundary line, lands him in the middle of the desert… and in some embarrassing hot water. He’s too feisty and stubborn to take the hint, however, even when the FAA threatens to rescind his pilot’s license. Only when Alysa Cody, a beautiful young woman new to town, reminds Gordon of the life—and the love—he squandered years earlier, does he wonder if giving up the fight might be a better choice after all. But then again… When Ty Daggett, a local rancher, comes courting Alysa, complications from both their past lives threaten any happiness they might find with each other. Ultimately Ty must decide if he is willing to risk losing his heart again.

From Kirkus Reviews
The tale evinces a bluesy-comic undertone that doesn’t belabor itself with excess folksiness or contrived whimsy. A pleasant weekend-getaway read with a quixotic hero and a casual Southwestern flavor. -- KIRKUS Review

Review
A gem of a story! Claffey's characters, even the quirky ones, are people you'd like to invite over for coffee. Inspired by a twist of Southwestern history, the novel spotlights small town life, an unusual quest for justice, and unexpected love. Bravo.    -- Anne Hillerman

Planting the flag for New Mexico
By Laura Fairchild
The characters in Tom Claffey's new novel come alive with humor and humanity. In their unpretentious warmth and no-nonsense spirit, their personalities blend with the beautiful and uncompromising New Mexico landscape, with its ranches and deserts and small-town diners. At the heart of 103rd Meridien is Gordon Meese, a man obsessed with a 19th-century border dispute between New Mexico and Texas, regarding an inaccurate boundary line that not only gave Texas a two-to-three mile wide expanse of dusty land extending along eastern New Mexico, but also the oil revenues that have come with it. Texan hubris meets New Mexican fire in this lively story, which will likely inspire readers to research the old historical injustice, and learn more about the "Texas Strip Stake."

I have read all of Tom Claffey's books and this is by far, my favorite. Familiar characters from his previous books return and seem like old friends, while interesting new faces are introduced. I have travelled along the 103rd Meridian several times and had no idea it had such history. Surveys always seemed 'black and white' but, the quirky main character, Gordon Meese really gives some color to the land dispute. Not only did I learn about the 103rd meridian dispute, I also felt like I know a bit more about living the rough life on a New Mexico ranch.

Thank you Tom Claffey for enlightening me on the 103 Meridian. I was born and raised in New Mexico and had never heard of the Texas/New Mexico border dispute. Not only did I learn, I was touched by two rugged cowboys' stories who searched for their relationship dreams. One wins and another does not.
