Christopher J. Valin is a writer, artist, teacher and historian living in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children. He has written stories of all kinds since childhood, including novels, short stories, comic books, and screenplays. In 2009, his biography of his 5x great-grandfather, Fortune’s Favorite: Sir Charles Douglas and the Breaking of the Line, was published by Fireship Press. In addition to writing and inking for independent comic book companies and writing screenplays for production companies, Christopher has had numerous short stories published in anthologies such as Clockwork & Capes: Superheroes in the Age of Steam and Doomed: Tales of the Last Days.

A New Take on a Classic Genre

Let me start off by saying that since this is a young adult novel, I am by no means in the key demographic. It's been many, many moons since I was a young adult. Which is why it was such a pleasant surprise to find that, as I read Sidekick; The Red Raptor Files, I discovered that it didn't matter whether or not I was a young adult -- the book is gold at any age.

Now that's not to say the book is for everyone -- if you're really not a fan of the superhero/comic book genre, it might not be your cup of tea. But you know, now that I think about it, Red Raptor might be your thing regardless. If you like characters with complexity and depth, ones that have real (albeit mostly hero-related) problems that they face and overcome, then by all means crack the spine and dive right in.

I will say that, generally speaking, I'm not a fan of first person present tense storytelling. In fact, only two books come to mind where the perspective was handled so well that I hardly even noticed -- "Bright Lights, Big City" and this one. That, for me, puts this book in very exclusive company.

I have it on good authority that Part 2 is well under way, so if I were you, I'd get in on this series now. Not only because it's a great read, but also you'll be able to make fun of all the bandwagon jumpers once the series really takes off.

Enjoyed Chris' book very much

Enjoyed Chris' book very much. With this genre type, I think it's easy to start out guessing the author with characters and plots. I liked Sidekick's perspective from the understudy as opposed to the so called "obvious" hero. I also enjoyed seeing the characters develop. And I definitely like it when at the end, I hope for another book to follow and Sidekick met that challenge for me.

Who are you calling "sidekick"?

I've been a comic book reader since I was 10 years old. Now that I'm in my 30s, there's still a soft spot in my heart for super heroics, but now I expect a lot more than simple fisticuffs. I want stories that go beyond simple wish fulfillment. I want stories that delve into the complicated motivations of complex characters. In other words, I want my super heroes to grow up with me. And that's just what I got in Christopher Valin's Sidekick: The Red Raptor Files.

Without giving too much away, I particularly enjoyed the shift of focus from the spotlight-hogging heroes to the unsung sidekicks. And make no mistake: this is not a "gee golly, aw shucks, I'm just a kid" type of sidekick. This kid's got an edge that comes through brilliantly in every line of his first-person narration.

Beyond the engaging characters, I was impressed by the level of thought that was put into fleshing out this fictional world in which super-powered beings walk amongst us. This novel is replete with nods to classic comic book tropes, but in Mr. Valin's hands, they feel fresh and revitalized.

By the end of this quick-paced and sharply-written novel, you'll agree that the Red Raptor is no mere sidekick--he's earned every right to be called a partner.

Exciting and Engaging; My Favorite of the Series

I have to say; this book is my new favorite of the series. Once I got halfway through it I couldn’t put it down!

This was a fantastic installment.

Whenever I am reading a series, I always am concerned that I will not be able to remember what happened in the last book, which would result in my being confused when reading the current installment. Any confusion that I may have had while reading the newest Andy Smithson was dispelled a few chapters in; everything from the last book came flooding back! L.R.W. Lee does a great job recapping what has happened in the past.

Now that we are farther into the series, Andy is not the only one who is being pulled to Oomaldee from his world; his mother now joins him on his trips. I love seeing the main character’s relationship with his parents grow, and I enjoy watching him work through his struggles.

The theme of this installment was ‘courage’. And there was some Wizard of Oz analogies sprinkled here and there, which was exciting for me, considering that I have recently been on a minor Wizard of Oz craze. We see the characters facing their fears and working through grief. The book is written in such a way that not only are you watching the character learn how to deal with grief or fear, you also receive some advice for working through your own difficulties. And this is not presented in an obvious manner; it flows right along with the plot. This element, which spreads throughout the series, makes it a perfect choice for parents wishing to give their children good literature. Not only is the series engaging and creative, it is also a great way to instill wonderful values.

About halfway through the book the questing party engages in a ‘Battle of Wits’, as I’m choosing to call it, with a group of griffins. This ‘Battle of Wits’ involves riddles.

Guys, I love riddles, so this was one of my favorite parts of the book. I learned some new ones, and I was rather proud of myself when I solved two of them.

The book ended on a complete cliff hangar, like L.R.W. Lee’s books always do. I was not pleased when it ended; I wasn’t done reading! It had gotten so good, and I was dying to know what happened next. Now I have to wait an entire year to find out any more.

Vision of the Griffin’s Heart is an emotional roller coaster. Andy Smithson is growing up while facing unprecedented challenges.

In Book 5 of this Andy Smithson series Andy faces his greatest challenges so far. As the heir apparent to the throne of Oomaldee, he and his family become the primary target of the evil Abbadon. The story opens with Andy and his Mom back in Lakehills, Texas. Andy has been reflecting on events just prior to his leaving Oomaldee about a year earlier when a chest appears near the family mailbox. In it, a letter from this friend Alden and one from Yara Princess of Chromlech. “The two hit it off,” after Hans the healer lead a mission to rescue her from Abbadon.

Shortly thereafter a flock 30 zolts armed with swords appeared, accompanied by a sound like thunder on a clear day. The adventure is on.
Readers of this series by author LRW Lee have come to anticipate a host of challenges, intense battles and on a monumental scale. In Vision of the Griffin’s Heart, you won’t be disappointed.

Not all challenges require physical skills and acumen. As an example, while searching the contents of the attic at his home in Lakehills, Andy finds a parchment, the Prophecy of Deliverance. In the prophesy there’s a mystery. Deciphering the mystery gives clues to his fate. The prophesy begins:

The enemy borne from within appears, casting shadows, darkness, and fear.
He avenges without pity,
makes the Land’s inhabitants quake;
chaos and destruction
ravage in his wake.
Blind to the troika’s beacon,
a glow pierces the night.

This challenge and others provide guidance to Andrew, his friends and allies. Andy receives assistance from: his father, mom, his Mini-Me (sort of like his conscience), the magician Merwin and other leaders. As the story progresses, Andy realizes the people of Oomaldee can’t defeat Abbadon on their own. The allies must build a coalition with friendly states in the area to challenge Abbadon.

LRW Lee draws upon epic fantasies like Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia which to a large extent are based on Nordic myths and the Bible. These writings challenge protagonists to engage enemies in battles of good against evil. The good folks in these stories aren’t super heroes. The draw strength bonds of friendship, the participants working together toward a common goal. Sacrifices are made for the greater good of all. Friends draw upon faith from belief in a higher power, in God, and are guided by representatives of that power.

In this story Andy faces grief as people he loves either die or threatened with death. Through various means he is allowed to view and better understand, life beyond physical life, something that provides comfort if not elimination of grief.

This book shows us a more mature Andy, someone begins to understand the meaning of love and the pain that follows when love is taken away.
Andy Smithson Book 5 advances the ongoing quest as the stakes are raised. For lovers of fantasy, I consider it a must read.

admirable qualities

What does the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz have to do with Andy Smithson? Andy, who turns fourteen during the course of this book, lives in Lakehills, TX, with his dad, mom, and sister Madison. He is also the heir to the kingdom of Oomaldee which was put under a curse when the present King Hercalon V, who is now over 500 years old, stabbed his own sister Imogenia so that he could take the throne. One of Andy’s jobs is to collect the ingredients for a potion to break the curse. However, there is another problem. The evil Abbadon, king of Oomaldee's northern neighbor Hadession, is trying to conquer the entire region. Abbadon steps up his attacks on Andy and his mom at home over the period of a year. Then, when Andy arrives back in Oomaldee, he learns that his special sword Methuselah may no longer be able to defeat his nemesis.
Still, Andy receives a clue for the fifth ingredient needed for the curse-breaking potion, the black claw of a griffin. One not-so-small problem is that griffins guard the land of Carta's gold and silver mines and don't take kindly to humans. He also finds out that restoring the various kingdoms’ centers of power might help stop Abaddon. While Andy and his friends are away in Carta, Abaddon attacks the castle in Oomaldee, and the effectiveness of the strikes which defeat the military's planned counter measures shows evidence that the enemy is getting inside information. Could there a spy in their midst? And what can Andy do about the situation? There are a few childish slang terms but no bad language. It is said once that “Andy silently cursed” the sky, but no actual curse words are used, and Andy’s “inneru” (conscience) says, “Watch your mouth.”
As the age of Andy increases, so does the age of his intended readers. Some parents may feel that a few of the descriptions, such as the ride on the griffins, the air battle with the zolt, and the fighting at Castle Avalon, could be a little intense for younger readers. Also, a bit of innocent, typical, adolescent boy-girl activity, such as kissing, begins to occur. However, none of this involves anything that is inappropriate or objectionable. One of the admirable qualities that I like about the entire series is seeing Andy’s growth from a self-absorbed kid to a more thoughtful teen as he learns how to deal with the various crises which face him and prepares himself eventually to become king, all the while knowing that the future may hold some very unpleasant consequences. The watchword for Vision of the Griffin's Heart is “courage.” One final warning—it ends very much up in the air so as to keep the reader’s interest at attention for the next installment.

Set in Victorian England and written in a voice of the times, this novel holds you captivated by the dark side of London in 1861 where gruesome murders of young women set the Victorian minds ablaze with their fascination and curiosity of the macabre.

As the newspapers treat a series of murders with their usual sensationalism, it is left to Detectives Stride and Cully to try and find the murderer by deduction and supposition alone. They are hampered by the Press and also the reluctance of the community to share information vital to the case for fear of comebacks from their peers and losing their jobs.

The novel opens with a particularly good narrative about the London rain which sets the tone for the whole novel with its depth of description. Each scene is carefully crafted to give the reader a really vivid perception of exactly what life was like for women, the poor, the rich and the desperate as they act out their parts in the story.

One character I particularly championed was Hyacinth Clout whose life was filled with guilt and servitude until a chance event brings her a moment of clarity which is to change her outlook on life forever, giving her the courage to move forward and live the life she had always assumed was out of her reach.

A novel full of tricksters, murders, lies and intrigue. I challenge you to be able to put it down once you start reading. Carol Hedges has again delivered a book which is written to be devoured in one sitting.

Recommended - Victorian murder mystery

A serial killer stalks the streets of London targeting the unfortunate women working in or for the sweat shops of the garment industry. Until that is, a well to do young lady meets her maker in a theatre box. The women all are all killed in the same way but unfortunately Detective Inspector Leo Stride and his Detective Sergeant, Jack Cully, of the detective division of the Metropolitan Police, aren’t making a lot of progress. The killer leaves no evidence and no witnesses have come forward. Only Emily Benet whose friend was the first victim, is willing to help the detectives. Stride and Cully must use any and all means at their disposal to try and apprehend the killer. Once again they are persecuted by the press for failing to do so in record time, with discrediting headlines, such as ‘Ghastly Murder’ and ‘Baffled Detectives’ which do nothing but hamper the investigation.

The story is peopled with a wonderful mix of fascinating, if not always likeable, and extremely well drawn characters both primary and secondary, with names reminiscent of the Dickensian era. We have, among others, the obnoxiously repulsive Rev. Bittersplit, the appealing Mullygrub children, horrid Lobelia Clout and the awful Morbid Crevice and his equally awful wife. Hyacinth Clout is an appealing character and one of my favourites. She rises above the cruelty of her sister and improves her life immeasurably; although not quite in the way she envisioned, after receiving a reply to her response to a personal advertisement in The News of the World. Hyacinth can’t think of anything worse than ‘a life of mindless and repetitious drudgery and boredom’.

Although the main aspect of the plot revolves around the murders, Carol Hedges cleverly and seamlessly weaves in sub plots and characters which connect and/or touch one another’s lives.

As with Diamonds & Dust, the first book in the series, Victorian London is brought to life vividly and packed with period detail. The squalor and hardship which is the lot of the much less fortunate, contrasting sharply with the more affluent members of society, the class divide all too apparent. The women who work long hours sewing beautiful gowns for those more affluent members, the Foundling unfortunate enough to work for Mrs Whitlow in her less than salubrious boarding house and Tonkin, a shop boy apprenticed to Morbid Crevice for the last six years. They are all, along with the story, authentic and believable. The writing is witty and engaging, flowing smoothly through the narrative. I love the covers too, with the little symbols relating to each story. Looking forward to book three which is due out later this year.

The book alternates between two narrators, giving perspective from multiple sides. It has creative characters and offers a unique take on the dynamic between teachers and students. It offers hope for what a caring teacher can accomplish, especially with a little supernatural power thrown in.

I simply fell in love with this book

I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.
This book is brilliant.

Najwa just has a way with her words that articulates my inner feelings. The positivity and her outlook on many situations found in this book is enlightening and peaceful. It gives me a perspective of self confidence, self respect and that taking the higher road by doing the right thing can only do you good. I can't wait to see what else she has in store for her readers. Great read.

It's a must read not only for women as a lot of the practice applies to all people who come from a peaceful environment and are unaware and oblivious of other environments.
