Truly Unique, Truly Great

What a unique, great read! I absolutely love to find unique works of fiction (which most of the time seems impossible these days); however this book was a delightful change from so many cookie cutter Best Sellers. The concept was something I've not seen explored in any book I've previously read, and where it led was magic to me.

Through the story Katie weaves you get such a roller coaster of emotional experiences, personally touching interactions, and literally worlds of realities for your imagination to explore and develop. I did not want it to end - took me days and days to slowly work through the last chapters as I took time to pause and let my mind think about where it could be going and all the potential endings...I did not get what I had expected, and that is hard to do!

I should mention that the ending was better than any I thought in my head. Now I need a book...

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book! The central idea of the story is fascinating and Ms Matthews did a very good job of exploring the concept. I think all of us have that human nature to be intrigued by death and after-life experiences and this book speaks to that curiosity in a fashion I haven't read about before. The author makes us truly care about not just the main character but the other characters he touches. For a first published book, Ms Matthews has represented herself extremely well. Can I suggest a sequel to Cut and Bound to allow the readers and fans to continue exploring Cole's journey with him?

Fascinating and thought-provoking concept

I love finding a new, creative and interesting concept in storytelling. Ms. Matthews provides just that in her debut novel. She has found a unique way to explore several characters in what is basically a series of short stories. You can't help but use your own imagination to put yourself in the position of many of the characters and the world they find themselves in. What more can you ask for than a book that stimulates your own imagination.

A MUST READ BOOK!

This is a must read book!! First time reading a Sci-Fi book. I read this book in three days. I was so into it, I actually downloaded it on my cell phone, so during my breaks & lunch at work, I could continue to read. Once you start reading this book, it is very hard to put it down. Constant on the edge book. Highly recommend!! Cannot wait to read more books written by Susan Rose!!

Great Beach Read!

Suspense. Humor. Drama. Romance. In Susan Rose's debut novel, "Shattered Crust" the reader is transported into a world where all things are possible and yet nothing is as it seems.

As a side note, I have been thoroughly distressed by a couple of recent reviews posted here by "critical friends" who seem to have made it their mission to tear Mrs. Rose down personally. This is not some Kafka-esque tome that should be pondered and dissected in a literature class. It is the highly entertaining debut novel of a burgeoning talent & should be treated as such.

Even better than the first book!

One of my favorite, favorite books of 2015 is Unmade by Amy Rose Capetta. She wrote the prequel, Entangled, and yes, you should definitely read Entangled before Unmade. (Because, um, why not? It's awesome! Also, spoiler-y reasons.)

Re-cap: Entangled is the story of a rocker girl named Cade who thinks she's alone in the universe until she discovers that she is atomically entangled with another human on the other end of the universe, and in order to save him she has to go way, way out of her comfort zone and travel with a band of smugglers to get to him. Before you ask, no, she's not in love with him. That'd be far too easy.

Unmade picks up where Entangled left off, with Cade determined to find her mother using her talent for hearing other people's songs. Unfortunately, the nasty Unmakers aren't too keen on humanity surviving much longer, and the universe becomes very dangerous for humans. Cade, Renna & Rennik, Lee, Ayumi, Gori, and newcomer Mira team up to execute a daring plan to save what's left of the human race--and find a new home for them all before they succumb to space-sickness.

I loved Entangled because it rang with the charm and strangeness of Firefly, but I adore Unmade because it thrums with the danger and urgency of Battlestar Galactica. (Hey-o, nerd alert!) Everything about this book is fast, adventurous, and dangerous, and the stakes couldn't be higher. But while our beloved characters are saving the universe, they're also dealing with shifting relationships, falling in love, learning how to trust one another, grieving and celebrating, and figuring out what's right. The quiet moments of connection are just as breathtaking as the action sequences, and that's what makes this novel stand out.

I'm so proud of Cade and how far she's come in this novel. She's the same, lovable, tough girl she was in chapter one of Entangled, but now she channels that anger and those feelings into doing something that matters, into being brave, and into saving the universe.

Because I know what you're wondering--yes, Unmade is even swoonier than Entangled! We don't just have one couple, but TWO to sigh over. I love Cade and Rennik. I love Lee and Ayumi. I love all the kissing (and more) that's in this book. It's not inappropriate or gratuitous. It's just RIGHT.

My final verdict: Unmade is worth the read. It's worth re-reading. (I read it twice!) It's worth buying. It's worth buying in hardcover. It's a very shiny book, and I mean that in more ways than one.

Page turner at times; but awkward, abrupt and distractingly not belieable at others

I know most people who read reviews are looking for 4-5 stars before purchasing a product. This was a good book, but suffers from some of the same problems as Entangled, the first book of this story.

As with the first book, although this is marketed to "young readers" it has adult (sexual) content/themes (although is not explicit). As such I think it is of the emerging "space opera" theme more than science fiction. In this second book, the living ship Renna takes a more central role. This is the most enjoyable part of the book. Later in the book are "space" battles which lack in their description (compared to other space opera or science fiction). There are unexplained gaps in time as well as a lack of explanation of why the Unmakers (who are stated to outnumber and outpower the normal humans), do not just attack.

Capetta's writing is poetic and flowing at times, but awkward and abrupt (as if sections of text were removed with no explanation or flow between events and times). At the end of the book, there is no explanation of why some of the Unmakers change their "tune" nor of why the other Unmaker ships do not attack...

Overall, reading the book felt like reading a draft. Interesting and a page turner at times, but not believable at others -- which was very distracting. For example -- given that our technology has already outlived "tape" as a recording medium for most data, audio, and certainly for video, one part of the book talks about video (surveillance) tapes (ala VHS). It makes it hard to believe ...

Amy Rose Capetta brings exactly what I’ve been wanting from YA Science Fiction. With a deliciously unique flavor and a fantastically written narrative, ENTANGLED and UNMADE are setting the bar high for teen sci-fi.

The galaxy-spanning conclusion to Amy Rose Capetta’s acclaimed sci-fi debut, Entangled.
Cadence is in a race against time and space to save her family and friends from the Unmakers, who are tracking the last vestiges of humanity across the cosmos. As the epic battle begins, Cade learns that letting people in also means letting them go. The universe spins out of control and Cade alone must face the music in the page-turning conclusion to Entangled.

The sci-fi action starts on page 1 and doesn’t let up until the end. Literally galaxy-spanning, the adventures of Cade and her friends and crewmates are not just for fun – they are trying to save the human race from extinction. They do impossible, insane things, and it is absolutely spectacular. The technology is light years ahead of what I could imagine, the aliens are weird, but no more frightening than familiar human evils, and the fights are unusually clever.

UNMADE avoids the typical sequel flop, as it has a wealth of character development. While we’re introduced to Cade’s entire crew in ENTANGLED, they really don’t even begin to shine until the action gets going in the sequel. Lee and Ayumi are a dynamic and fascinating duo (and a refreshingly honest relationship, too). Cade’s relationship with the ship’s captain is also fascinating, because Rennick is an alien, and Cade doesn’t want to like him, let alone love him. Rennick has similar boundary issues, and they dance around each other for most of the book. Cade and Rennick go through a lot of challenges, and their complex relationship may turn some readers off, but I enjoyed it.

The world-building is well thought out and complex, but doesn’t get in the way of the human drama at the heart of the story. The characterization is great, and doesn’t falter for a nanosecond throughout the book. I loved the first book, and the second delivered a smashing conclusion. If you’re looking for a uniquely-narrated, fast-paced, wild and crazy ride through the galaxy, pick up ENTANGLED and UNMADE by Amy Rose Capetta.

Así nos va contando la historia del crecimiento de los barrios de chabolas poblados por los inmigrantes de Anatolia que llegan allí en busca de trabajo. Es también la historia de amor de Mevlut y las dos hermanas que se convierten en sus esposas.
Con una narración sencilla y profunda, Pamuk construye esta maravillosa obra de arte que es no sólo ficción sino historia verdadera.

Desde que lei Nieve en el año 1995 he sido un fiel lector de Pamuk. He leido todos sus lirbros traducidos a nuestro idioma, los he disfrutado muchisimo y salte en mis dos pies cuando gano su premio nobel. Este libro, Una sensacion extraña, lo he gozado pagina por pagina. La historia de Mavlut y sus largas caminatas por la ciudad vendiendo Boza, su historia de amor y su dificil familial, pero sobre todo la historia de la ciudad de Estambul, que es como un personaje mas de la novela.

About the Author
James Mulhern has published fiction in several literary journals. A story was selected for The Library’s Best, an anthology of best short stories. In September of 2013, he was chosen as a finalist for the Tuscany Prize in Catholic Fiction. Mr. Mulhern was awarded a writing fellowship to study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom during the summer of 2015. In September of 2015, two short stories received Honorable Mentions for the Short Story America Prize. Nine short stories/adaptations from his novel, Molly Bonamici, a dark comic mystery set in Boston and South Florida, have been accepted for publication. The Missouri Review, considered one of the premier literary magazines in the United States, wrote that the "work impressed the editorial staff with its well-written, complex characters, themes of the piece, and its fantastic voice."

The power of this book tells a story to Shape & Sustain us--like walking thru these relationships with thoughts and emtions helping to uncover the source and fluctuations of one's inner energy-----The Fascinatig Characters --- --reminded me of my own teenage Catholic years and the Struggles to believe along with the many questions of doubt.. A dark ---; wise & inspiring read--written in a most superb mode. A must read.!!!!

I found the character portrayal to be very interesting. I was particularly intrigued with Molly, especially as she was effected by the elderly characters both Italian and Irish. I hope that Mr. Mulhern will follow up with more stories of Molly.

Winning combination

Excellent writing and sense of pace. It built up slowly, and kept me interested. I anticipated the end, but didn't know how it would do so. The suspense was wonderful! I loved the sense of imagery and graphic details! James Mulhern has a keen awareness of what grabs the reader ....both the grotesque and the sacred. Winning combination. Plus the subtleties of the characters are spot on! Mulhern doesn't hit you over the head with sarcasm or wit, it is fluid and part of the charm he builds into his characterization, especially with the use of dialogue. No manipulation or sentimentality. I can't wait to see more of his writing!

Kate’s only concern is for her aunt. Much to Steven’s dismay, Kate, Happy and Lula Mae aren’t going to sit back and leave the investigating to the police. The three women team up to find a killer.

This is the first book in the “Flower Patch Mystery” series and it’s off to an amazing start. It oozes Southern charm and is filled with delightfully amusing characters. Kate, Happy and Lula Mae's antics had me laughing throughout the book. The story is fast-paced with many twists and turns. There are many suspects to choose from and there were times during the story when I thought each one was the killer. This is some town to live in – quirky and quaint doesn’t even begin to describe it.

I enjoyed every minute of this sweet cozy which has humor, romance and mystery combined to give readers a delightful few hours of reading. I hope we get more books from this creative author.

Southern coziest: gardening, mystery, and romance

REVIEW: A TALENT FOR MURDER by Teresa LaRue

If you're looking for a warm, cuddly, Southern cozy mystery with which to curl up, here it is. Teresa LaRue' s lovely A TALENT FOR MURDER simply oozes Southern charm and attitude ("Does she know what sort of people he comes from?") and yes, Southern judgmentalism ("low down double-digging weasel"). You've got to chuckle, because the characters are so true to life: reading this mystery is like watching a stage play [more "Arsenic and Old Lace" than "The Mousetrap"). And of course, there's got to be a murder, and all the wrong suspects are accused. There's amateur investigation, gardening, and romance. Get a cup of herbal tea, curl up in your favorite armchair, and just enjoy.

Sleuths in the Flower Patch!

A Talent for Murder is the first book in brand new Flower Patch Mystery series. And I am ready for #2 since this one got off to a great start!

The three main characters are a daughter, her mother and her aunt and they make for some comic antics. They are down to earth southern people that you would want as friends. Lots of cooking and gardening to add to your enjoyment of the story.

I lost count of how many times I changed my mind as to which person could be the killer. The author gives us many twists and turns. Just when I thought it was a certain person, she would give a hint that would change my mind. That makes for a fun read!

This was an excellent cozy that I would highly recommend!
