About the Author
Derek Berry is a senior political science major at the College of Charleston. His work has been published in Power of Words and Poetry Diversified as the 2011 and 2012 prize winner of the Poetry Matters Literary Prize, (2011, 2013 P.R.A. Publishing). He self-published his first chapbook, Skinny Dipping with Strangers in 2013. His spoken word album Perfect Nights was released in 2014. A native of Aiken, South Carolina. Berry spent a brief stint as a freelance columnist for Verge Magazine while fine-tuning his skills as a spoken word poet; performing throughout the southeastern United States. His short stories can be found in The Inkling and on his blog The Savage Pen. Heathens and Liars of Lickskillet County is Berry's first fiction novel.

From a Wanderer's Perspective

A timely novel that explores lingering racism in a society that has changed for the better in most ways. A teen aged son of a lawyer hired to defend white supremacists shuttles around the South. In Lickskillet County, he bonds with peers to figure out who they are and what really goes on there. Interesting characters and a great read.

I've always read Derek's work on Word press. I was excited to see that he published a book and bought it the first day it was released. The book flows with my personality pretty well and has kept my interest throughout. A solid read and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a adventourous storytelling.

Engaging story, mostly relatable characters

It took a little to really get into the story, but once I had read past the first few chapters, I found myself really wanting to continue reading. I quite enjoyed the narrator's perspective, and how it shifted frequently, as well as the way one narrator would follow after another without being temporally linear.

I had a little difficulty engaging with Cass, primarily because I felt the shift in her character happened implausibly quick, and overall the end felt fast. But definitely give the book a read, and revel in the interwoven lies and deceptions, as well as the complete surprises that you will find.

Me and My Bacon by Ceanmohrlass is the story ofteenager Mera's life, family, friendships and problems as she adjusts to yetanother new town and new school. So much unsettling moving around is caused byher mother's struggle with bipolar disorder. At first Mera knows little aboutthis illness because no one tells her anything - and she only sees theconfusing and painful effect it has on her mother's relationships and on her(Mera's) own emotional state. Mera makes new friends, grows to like her mom'spatient new husband, Owen, graduates from high school, gets engaged, and thenmarries someone else. In her quest to be as unlike her mother as possible, withher unpredictable outbursts and often unkind ways of treating others, Meraseeks to be a good and understanding friend to those around her - with theresult that she often finds herself sorting out or taking on responsibilitiesin quite mature ways.

Me and My Bacon is written from the firstperson point of view with young Mera telling her own story. The book's writingstyle is a kind of young person's journal then, and this draws the reader intoMera's world, her problems, worries, hopes, and determination to begin to standup for herself. Mera is a likable main character - individual and verybelievable, I thought. She has many of the typical emotional reactions andproblems that children and teenagers of a parent with an ongoing serious mentalillness can have. She often blames herself for her mother's reactions,constantly fearing she must have done something wrong, while at the same timeloving her mother dearly. Intriguingly obsessed with finding solace in eatingbacon, she also has spells of feeling ill due to emotional turmoil and upset.Through the plot, which moves at a good pace, Mera begins to find herself anddevelops the confidence and courage to express her own wishes - thus eventuallyemerging from the shadow of her sometimes inadvertently neglectful mother.

Ceanmohrlass shows Mera to be both a typicalteenager and a young woman with remarkable courage too. This is a story thatshows the effects of mental illness on the whole family and how those effectsshape the personalities and outcomes for children in the family. I do feel thatstories like this, thought-provoking but not too heavily done, are importantand a good way to enlighten and educate.

Life is tough, and even tougher for teenagers, who feel that no one understand them. It's worse for Mera, as she has to move around a lot, each time starting over and reinventing herself. It's a lovely story about Mera, and how she tries to not lose herself, her true self. It's a good read and very well written. The reinvention of oneself is most difficult as a child.

This book is about starting over yet again and moving around a lot as a child. The character, Mera, has me following her and seeing the story from her point of view. I never got to move when I was little and I remember begging my parents to move once. My dad said he moved a lot when he was little and didn't want his kids to ever have to do that. This book helps me to see both sides clearly. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

A book that keeps me reading far into the night (when I should be sleeping) is the best compliment I can give the author. The characters are interesting and intriguing and the novel moves at a satisfying pace. High school students in desert communities will love this book!

Gremlins with a Twist.

Scorpions is like Gremlins but much more of a nightmare.. instead of tiny, furry creatures terrorizing the town its giant mutant like scorpions that are taking over the town of Laughlin. A teenager named Jonathan joined by his friends and his crazy uncle ban together to combat the monsters that are devastating the town. The story has a mix of everything, horror, sci-fi, comedy and even a little bit of romance. Mike Cook did a great job bringing the characters personalities to life which makes it easy for the readers to connect to them. If you are a fan of horror or sci-fi then I recommend reading this book. Great job and look forward to more.

Decent First Effort - Good Icky Bug!

When I first spotted Scorpions, I was at the KABAM book festival in Kingman, Arizona, plugging my own book. At first, I thought it was some kind of military thriller. Later in the day, I wandered over and met Mike Cook, the author. We got to talking and I found out Scorpions was a self-published icky bug (horror) novel, right in line with what I like to read. This sounded like the good old b-movie icky bug stories I’ve loved since the late 50’s. The first thing I did was leaf through the book to make sure it was third-person.

Toward the end of the event, when the crowds died down, we got to talking and turns out we had not only an interest in icky bug, but metal music as well. I almost bought the book right then, but got distracted when a customer came to my table. Jump ahead a month or so and since I can’t find good icky bug in the bookstores, I made a big order off Amazon. I looked up this one and bought it. I just finished it.

The story was everything I expected and I was surprised at how much I liked it, considering it was self-published from a first-time author with virtually no local guidance, the best I can tell. There was so much to like about not only the plot, but the characters and the little details thrown in. Plus I liked the ending, which made all the difference.

I do have some issues with the writing, though considering he self-published, it turned out not too bad. First off, I won’t read anything that isn’t third-person, past-tense. In that case, the author stuck true to the style. However, his point of view was omniscient, which I’m not a fan of. The story was full of head-hopping and the focus shifted from one character to the next, paragraph to paragraph, sometimes within paragraphs. There was a lot of they’s and them’s as well: a lot of impersonal pronouns. The story could’ve been so much stronger with focused third person.

I also found lots of grammatical errors that weren’t direct spelling issues, but cases of tell versus show and compound words that were separated, awkward phrases and many more. Plus there were numerous formatting issues. However, considering he did this project, including the excellent cover himself, I give him kudos for effort.

Since I’m an editor, I tend to see these things most readers will never consciously spot. One day, when (and I say when, not if) he becomes a big name author, I’d love to see Scorpions get a professional treatment. Then it would really rock!

As it is, I still had a great time and enjoyed the story from the first page to the end, despite cringing at some of the editorial issues. Not bad at all! Recommended.

This is good

Battling insomnia following a recent surgery, I gave up and turned to “Unraveled,” a novel I had purchased because the author is a classmate from high school days. I remembered her as possessing wit and intelligence, so I didn’t think my money would be wasted in the purchase. I wanted something to engage me, to distract me, to get me through the wee small hours of restlessness and discomfort. I was not disappointed. “Unraveled” is a page-turner, and reading it got me through the sleepless hours.

The author knows her characters, and I found myself wondering (no, pretty convinced) that some of the story was autobiographical. I won’t spoil the plot, but it is deftly written and held my attention easily. Navigating insomnia requires good stuff, and this book has it.

Although I enjoyed the book

This is a real page turner. The characters are carefully drawn and the plot follows their actions very smoothly. Although I enjoyed the book, there were times when I squirmed at the memories from those times - the 1950s - which I lived through. The interactions between men and women were so...shall we say, unenlightened in those days - and the author pulls no punches in showing us the unhappiness that ensues from these interactions.
I could imagine a contemporary girl or young woman - maybe my granddaughter - asking why the women in the book put up with the thoughtless and sometimes abusive behavior from the boys and men.
This is what a good novel should do after all - it should make us squirm occasionally - and think about things. Thanks to the author for a multi-faceted book and a good read.

My son’s new favorite book!

I’ve never heard a kids/teen book that is purely educational, called a masterpiece; but that is exactly what this is. This is hardcore for parents that want their kids to have an edge and to thrive when others can’t seem to grasp the basics of economic survival. I told God when each of my children were born that I would fight and do anything humanly possible to give them a better life than I had. This book series is absolutely the most profound series I’ve ever seen anywhere in homeschooling curriculum. Put this on your ‘must buy’ list, now!

My daughter is the only one in her class who understands cybersecurity!!

My daughter’s tutor suggested this book, all I needed to do is read the preface and I was hooked. This writer is a beast! Each chapter spoon feeds your child the most articulately written information in a patient and powerful manner. Try reading one chapter and not retaining a majority of the information, I bet you can’t! 5 stars!

About the Author
Nathan Haddish Mogos was born in 1982, to Eritrean parents in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He completed his higher education at the University of Asmara, Eritrea. Nathan has held several professions along the years in half a dozen countries; English teacher, a cadet in a heavy artillery brigade, salesman, tourist guide, sales promoter, waiter, bakery and food packaging staff, delivery man, mail distribution depot attendant, janitor, catering assistant, intern journalist, interpreter and translator right until he realized his dream as a published author. His first work of fiction, Mottak: An African tale of Immigration and Asylum was released in 2014 and 2015 as an ebook and paperback. The debut work was also translated to Norwegian by the esteemed translator Tor Edvin Dahl and published in 2014.

I absolutely loved 'Amid the Chaos'

I absolutely loved 'Amid the Chaos'. This is one of the first of its kind that reflects the stagnant nature of life in Eritrea, and how young Eritreans deal with this reality. Set in the beautiful Asmara, this book is a social commentary on life from a young Eritrean perspective. What I liked most about this book was the intellectual discussion between the characters regarding how they viewed the political and social climate, as well as their proposed solutions. One of the things that distinguishes this book from its contemporaries is that it shows a balanced view of what seems to be a chaotic political and social climate. Though it is hard to muster up a definitive solution to the problems associated with Eritrean politics, what this book does is at least show young Eritreans that you can hold opposing views and exchange thoughts absent of animosity towards one another. Perhaps it is the first step in the right direction, and this book was absolutely one of its kind to demonstrate this notion so eloquently. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is curious about Eritrean/African politics or cares for a raw, honest representation of life in Eritrea.

Brilliant Portrait of Unknown Africa

Set in Asmara, the vibrant capital of Eritrea, AMID THE CHAOS gives us the powerful story of two close friends, both victims of their county’s universally required military service and both deserters. They are always on the run, always on the lookout for omnipresent MPs who are sometimes easily fooled and just as often surprisingly effective in finding deserters and bringing them back to their units for punishment and reassignment to the front lines of their county’s never ending wars. Chenkelo is an intellectual with visions of a great and powerful future for his continent, but he’s been forced to turn high tech hustler to survive. Misghe, is a poet, a charmer, and a lover. He feels that he’s in far greater danger from the consequences of his desertion. The pair prowls the alleyways, bars, and brothels of Eritrea seeking good hiding places, conversation, and comfort. And they often find them, with attractive young women, and more importantly with a noted university professor who sees their promise and encourages their efforts.

Author Nathan Mogos gives us a carefully drawn picture of the people, places, dreams, and nightmares of this dangerous but amazing part of the world. There’s drama in Misghe’s attempted escape from his homeland and the life threatening dangers of his run from the MPs. There’s action in Chenkelo’s vivid memories of his military service. There are plenty of colorful characters, plenty of rich settings and deep insights. But above all there’s the power of a strong friendship that unites the two men even after they are long parted.

Epic and wort it!

This story brings us to a place where two friends are torn between their principles, friendship, their country and their freedom to choose what they want to do with their lives. The author wrote a story that is epic and good enough to be a movie. The characters have twists in their personalities which made each character something that you will look out for. Chenkelo’s character is what I liked best because of his unusual personality. He is someone that has something more to offer. He is a man of principle and stands up for what he believes in.

At times of despair, there will always be a friend who will be by your side. Same as in this story. Running away, hiding and always looking back to make sure that there is no danger behind you. It is amazing how the character on this story has stood together.

This book is really inspiring and full of life’s lessons. I totally recommend this to all readers

His words and work have appeared in journals such as Red River Review, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, The Grasslands Review, Texas Observer, The Austin Chronicle, Volpe, and the anthology "Is This Forever or What?: Poems & Paintings from Texas," published by Greenwillow Books in 2004. Of his poetry, Guggenheim fellow and author of The Oval Hour Kathleen Pierce writes, "Travis Ian Smith's poems are extraordinary because they bear and praise a world where transcendence is available if we surrender to the physical aspect of ourselves and things very nearby us, like flowers, or lovers, or a star. Words and lines written from such a place are rare in poetry because a maker of such poems must be diligent not to be carried completely by the emotional current of longing, whose extreme is sentimentality. Travis's poems move headlong onto this poetically dangerous edge with patience and clarity and grace. I would say they always have. His poems are wonderfully alive at the very delicate brink of delight." Travis Ian Smith received his MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State University, where he was awarded a grant by the Sewell-Elam Foundation for his distinguished graduate work. In 2002 his poem "Still Life with Boy and Trees" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. In 2016, A Feather Imprint, a literary press that Smith founded, will publish his fiction debut, Indie Darling, a novel about a musician's last chance at redemption. A resident of New Orleans, Travis Ian Smith teaches literature and film at the School of Continuing Studies at Tulane University.

But the most fun in this quick

Indie Darling is an engaging page-turner, a modern tale of dashed rock and roll dreams and the inner struggle of resisting one's own ability to lead. With the back drop of the author's home, New Orleans, Smith name drops restaurants, music venues, and gives us a brief Mardi Gras tutorial. But the most fun in this quick, quite-sexy-at-times read, is the promise in Travis Ian Smith's writing. The promise that this is just his first novel, and that there are many more to come. Don't keep us waiting too long!
