I've been trying to improve my life and how I feel about myself ever since I lost my job recently. This event really put things in perspective for me and made me come to the realization that I haven't been living my life the way I was ment too. I also realized that I wasn't happy with the person I was and I needed a change for the better. Unfortunately, improving yourself and your lifestyle is a difficult path to take alone. This book helped guide me to reaching my goal of self-improvement. There are many reasons why we are not happy and this book helps you move past them. The author even goes beyond the spiritual path to commensense information that we've all forgoten to use. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to move forward in their life. A+

Primero, si ya no has leído el primer libro de la serie, Cazador y Presa, yo te recomiendo comenzar allí, porque la autora asume que conoces los eventos de ese retrato y no gasta tiempo en repasarlos.

Este tomo sigue con la historia de Sarket, Selene, y Enor, y sin hablar específicamente de lo que pasa, nuestra vista del mundo y de la trama global se amplia mucho. Además de ser entretenimiento por sí mismo, establece algunos hilos de argumento que sugieren que viene una secuela muy interesante.

Si tuviera que quejar de algo, sería que a veces cosas pasan que, aunque tienen una explicación lógica, requieren un poquito más síntesis por parte del lector que me gustaría. [He puesto ejemplos en mi reseña en Goodreads, pero no quiero incluir "spoilers" aquí.] La nota de autora al final del libro dice que ella tuvo que “borrar capítulos entero y hasta eliminar arcos argumentales”, y puede ser que eso es el origen de este asunto.

Pero esa es una cosa muy pequeña, que no me impidió seguir ni disfrutar la narración. La calidad de la escritura, la trama, y los personajes más que compensan por cualesquiera faltas que hay. La única cosa que realmente me molesta es que este libro ya se acabó y tengo que esperar el próximo.

Well-written and captivating!

Eminent (Part II): The Promise I couldn't put this second book down! I read it in one sitting on my most recent flight. The author is able to captivate the reader and make you feel as if you are participating in the story with the main characters. The only complaint I had was that the 3rd book in the series wasn't out! (but, the 3rd book was recently published, so go ahead and read this one :))

Helpful book for Inmates and others struggling to better their lives

I believe that this book could be a tremendous help to those people who are getting out of prison and hoping to stay out, chock full of good advice. I would have given it 5 stars but I've never been in prison, or worked with a prison population, so can't really judge how effective it might be. It is non-judgemental but tells the truth about what you need to do to stay out once you get out. Chance doesn't sugar-coat what life will be like on the outside and tells you that it may be hard but if you follow the steps outlined, you can do it. I believe this book could benefit not only prisoners but those folks on the outside who might be living on the edge and wondering how to fix their lives.

A blessing in disguise...

I believe that this book is a blessing in disguise. This book being written by a correctional officer for those in which he is employed to correct and corral each and every day, is somewhat an oxymoron. If he is successful in helping those who are currently imprisoned, not repeating that action, then he may just unemploy himself. But the conviction for those he influences everyday is stronger than the comfort of employment. It brings one person to mind that is willing to sacrifice himself for the well being of others: Jesus. Read the book, give it to someone you know that has walked this path, or appears to be walking a path toward something you don't want them to experience.

The True Guide To A New Beginning

Let me just say this; DON'T WATCH MSNBC'S LOCKUP!!!! That show is pure reality T.V that's mixed with trash. Well, at least that's just my opinion. I'm just someone who purely hates reality T.V. If you really want to know what prison is like or if you want a career as a correctional officer or especially if you are a prisoner who is about to be released from jail, I highly recommend this book by Chance A. Johnmeyer. This book is not a fictional story. The book is basically a guide or a self help book for those who need help in building a new life after living a confined life. This book exists for many different reasons but I would like to state one reason; our prison system isn't working. Prisons are to reform people so that they don't re-commit crimes when they are let out. Yet look at the amount of people who are brought back to jail for repeated offenses. As prison officials try to re-build the prison system, we have books like Johnmeyer's to help those who not only need a guide to build a new life but who also deserve a second chance.
Chance A. Johnmeyer has been a correctional officer for many years and with the help of several prisoners, they bring to the world a guide that I am sure will keep people away from prison or will make sure that ex-prisoners never return. Meaning, just because you've never been in trouble with the law, doesn't mean that you shouldn't read this book. Even if you're aware of the differences between right and wrong, you should still read this book. I personally believe that you can never have too much guidance in the right direction. As for people who actually need a guide to a better life after prison; GET THIS BOOK!!! After you read the prisoners' stories and their struggles as well as Johnmeyer's life as an officer, you are for sure to find the desire to lead a better life. I'm not saying that this guide will one-hundred percent guarantee you a life without prison. It's up to you the person to learn from this book. If you choose not to learn from it, guess where you'll be heading back to?

Typical 1980s teen romance...

I loved this series back in the 80s, I grew up with this kind of fluff in school. To me school in the 80s was a million times better than current day.

Anyway, in this book shy, Lynne Henry anonymously enters a song writing contest at school. The lead guitarist in the highschool band falls in love with the song and will do anything to find the girl who wrote the it.

Long story short, Lynne breaks her silence, gets the "guy" and a make-over and everyone lives happily ever after.

One of my favorites

I started reading SVH books at age 11; I am 25 now and will still pick up a book every now and again. I'm from the old school; I really think the series went to pot after the first fifty titles. Anyway, Alone in the Crowd was one of my favorites. Lynne and the Droids are such believable, dynamic characters. I'm only sorry more wasn't written about them.

This is the classic 1980s ugly-ducking-gets-her-guy predictable romance where you know exactly what is going to happen all the way through,and you know that Lynne is going to get her..Guy!!(that was his name!)All the same,it is really enjoyable and very much held my attention and interest.

What to even say about this book. I was really unsure about it. Young Adult isn’t a genre I read often and add in the serious subject of HIV and this had the potential to be a really heavy handed. Luckily for me, it turned out to be a beautiful story of friendship, love and acceptance.
Alex is fourteen when his dad moves next door to Benny and his aunt. Benny spends summers with his aunt and his pet ball python in a room painted black that glows when the lights go out. Benny is so interested in astronomy and the stars, and that’s how Alex finds out Benny has HIV. “Are you going to try to be an astronaut?” “No. I wish though. But I’ve got HIV and I’m pretty sure NASA doesn’t let guys like me into their programs.” Life can be so unfair but Benny is just so incredible. He tells people right away so they can decide whether to be friends with him. And Alex hits it on the head, “I’m taking it you don’t have many friends.” But Alex is going to be his friend.
Alex’s dad is the best, trying to have the sex talk while Alex covers his ears. “Guy or girl, I’m here for you.” Wouldn’t it be great if all kids had that support? And Alex, going off to research HIV so he knows what to expect so he can be friends with Benny, he’s a lot like his dad. Benny not only has HIV but he has a crappy mother and a tough time at school. His solace is the summers, summer with aunt and with Alex. Him explaining AIDS to Alex, and then apologizing for explaining it, was heart breaking.
These two spend the summers together, getting closer and better friends every year. We get little comments about their time apart but the focus is on their time together. Alex’s mom is a psychiatrist and I expected so much more from her. Good thing he has that awesome dad.
Is the story a little fairy tale-ish? Yes in some ways. But I hope more than anything that these two princes get their happily ever after for years and years to come.
You can’t help who you fall in love with and you can’t help what your mom did before you were born that gave you a disease. But you can choose to be the best you can for that one you love. “I’m sorry I’m not healthy and I don’t know how many years you’ll have with me….On the worst days, it was knowing you were right here waiting for me that got me through. And on the best days, I got to be with you.” Young or old, sick or healthy, isn’t that was love is all about?

MY SUMMERS WITH BENNY was adorable, sweet, emotional, and everything I love about YA romances.

After his parents' divorce, Alex spends his summers with his dad. Right next door is a boy, Benny, and they instantly hit it off and become friends.

Benny doesn't have many friends due to having HIV. Kids his age don't understand and are afraid of him. Alex is the only real friend that Benny has. Even though the story is told from Alex's POV, it's perfectly clear how much Benny values Alex's friendship. Benny is a wonderful character. He's full of life and love, regardless of constantly having to deal with his illness. He was a complete joy to read about.

Alex accepts Benny completely. He doesn't let Benny's HIV scare him away. Instead he educates himself, and is open and honest. His absolute love for Benny shines through the pages, even before Alex is aware of what he feels for the other boy.

I loved how their story was told. There were snippets of their time together each summer through high school. Just glimpses of the time they spent getting to know each other and falling in love. Just glimpses, but just enough for me to fall head over heels for them. I adore first loves and first kisses and all the cuteness that surrounds such occasions. Benny and Alex were so adorable I can't even stand it.

YA fans, this one's for you! There are some heavy topics here, but wrapped up in a sweet story of young love.

About the Author
Jose Saramago (Azinhaga, Portugal, 1922) is the best-known contemporary Portuguese author. He has received many awards, including the Premio Camoes (equivalent to the Premio Cervantes for Portuguese) and the 1998 Nobel Prize. Saramago has written poetry, theater, chronicles, essays, and novels.

El Evangelio según Saramago

Un día estaba caminando el escritor portugués por una calle, creo que de Sevilla, cuando al pasar por enfrente de un quiosco le pareció ver un curioso libro titulado: El Evangelio según Jesucristo, siguió caminando con el libro en la cabeza, al no poder quitárselo decidió regresar para comprar el libro, pero ya no estaba, o quizás nunca lo estuvo. Suficiente señal para Saramago para decidir que ese libro necesitaba ser escrito, y así lo hizo. El resultado, El Evangelio según Jesucristo, levantó enormes controversias en el mundo cristiano, y el elogio universal de la critíca especializada.
10 años después, cae este libro en manos de esta humilde venezolana, quien no puede evitar maravillarse y espantarse por esta lectura. El libro no debería titularse El Evangelio según Jesucristo, sino según Saramago, porque el gran protagonista de la obra, y sobre quien pesa todo el dilema moral de la culpabilidad, es el carpintero José. La vida de Jesús adulto ocupa menos de la mitad del libro, y se revuelve alrededor de la culpabilidad heredada de su padre por haber permitido la matanza de los inocentes en Belén. La prosa de Saramago es impecable y llena de humor, la impostación de problemasen la prehistoria cristiana que podemos pensar como contemporáneos como crisis existenciales, ataques de pánico, es realmente genial. La novela puede resultar a momentos demasiado irreverente para aquellos que a pesar de no ser cristianos practicantes, hemos nacido y hemos sido criados como católicos. Nuestra religión y la de nuestros ancestros es puesta en ridículo.Todo sea por amor a la literatura.

Perspectiva cuestionadoramente humana del evangelio biblico.

Jose Saramago, en este libro nos brinda una muestra de su perspectiva humana y cuestionadora de todos los aspecto cotidianos y humanamente posibles en la vida de un personaje humano, con todas las caracteristicas del hombre del carne y hueso: Dubitativo, Interrogante, Contradictorio y Desobediente que pudo haber sido Jesus. Simplemente trata de una forma facil y sencilla de capturar el mundo de Jesus desde un pustode vista humano. No creo que contradiga en nada al evangelio biblico que conocemos, solo es una revuelta de ideas hacerca de lo que pudo ser la vida cotidiana del hombre mas notable y polemico de nuestra historia. Muy buena imaginacion.

Recomendable, una novela maestra.

Para leer hay que desprenderse de los prejuicios y entender que es una novela y en ningún momento pretende ser una verdad. Es historia paralela a la conocida y contada en la Biblia, nos presenta un Jesús humano con todos sus defectos, a un Dios imperfecto, egoísta y capaz de sacrificar a su propio hijo, que además necesita del diablo para existir.
Es una excelente novela, de las mejores que he leído, la historia me ha atrapado de inicio a fin, muy recomendable.
