This is actually a helpful little book on depression. The author gives some great, straight-forward, and practical advice on how to face the demons of depression. I had to take away one star because he really could have used a good proofreader. The content is there; it's just not presented in the most professional way.

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 – October 25, 1899) was a Canadian science writer and novelist, and a proponent of the theory of evolution He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham and at Merton College in Oxford, both in the United Kingdom.After graduation, Allen studied in France, taught at Brighton College in 1870–71 and in his mid-twenties became a professor at Queen's College, a black college in Jamaica. Despitehis religious father, Allen became an agnostic and a socialist. After leaving his professorship, in 1876 he returned to England, where he turned his talents to writing, gaining a reputation for his essays on science and for literary works. His first books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). He was first influenced by associationist psychology as expounded by Alexander Bain and by Herbert Spencer, the latter often considered[by whom?] the most important individual in the transition from associationist psychology to Darwinian functionalism. In Allen's many articles on flowers and on perception in insects, Darwinian arguments replaced the old Spencerian terms. On a personal level, a long friendship that started when Allen met Spencer on his return from Jamaica grew uneasy over the years. Allen wrote a critical and revealing biographical article on Spencer that was published after Spencer's death.

The Type-Writer Girl (1897) is one of only two novels he wrote under a female pseudonym, possibly to lend credibility to his first-person female narrator. The Type-Writer Girl invokes tensions typical of the fin de siècle concerning evolution, technology, and the role of women.

Slice of life

This is a rather amusing story that falls along convention fiction patterns--at least until the end. Though the novel does address the concerns and fears of young, well-bred English women thrust into the workplace, I question whether Grant Allen wrote this book to poke fun at the working girl, or sympathizes with her. All in all, The Type-writer Girl is a quick, easy read--so don't let the publication date fool you, not every "old" book is written in the florid manner of Dickens or James.

To this day, Prince Charles and Lady Catherine have not returned to assume the throne, or to search for their missing twins and the long manhunt for the royal twin's still continues. There had been much speculation as to what had happened. There are a few that know the true story, however, they are not about to let the story behind the royal family's disappearances become common knowledge. Four years after the temporary Regent, Rudemire Klug, his ten Regional Commanders and his army had imposed enormous taxes; the crippled economy had sent Freedonia on a downward spiral into despair. Many of the citizens feel the Connors had abandoned them. Unknown to the citizens of Freedonia, the dark wizard from the east, Drake Aldric's master plan is working, with two huge exceptions. The Connors twins are still alive, and it is taking much longer than he expected to eliminate them. As long as one Connors still lives, they are the rightful heirs to the throne. This is something the dark wizard is struggling to remedy and time is running out. When Charlie Connors reaches his fifteenth birthday, he will be coming of age. That is something Aldric is desperate to prevent from happening. If the citizens only knew what the Connor twins and the small band of rebels have endured, have done and are planning on their behalf, they wouldn't feel abandoned. They can never know. As the citizens had done in past wars, the people would rise up and fight for their king. Being kept in the dark has kept the Freedonia citizens from being involved in another wizard war. The last war; The Great Wizard War, almost caused the extinction of wizard kind. Drake Aldric and the the rebels fox leader do not want this to happen. After four years of living in the shadows, the Connors twins' three animal godfathers and their mouse friend are aging rapidly. If the twins and the other rebels can't find a way to turn them back into the wizards they once were, they will soon be passing away, one by one. There is a fine line between reality and fable as the young, wizard Prince of Freedonia, Charlie Connors, his twin sister, Kelly and friend, Timothy are about to find out. After completing their mission to draw Aldric's army's attention away from the magic dome hidden in the Oak Forest, they embarked on a mission of their own. They were ignoring their fox leader's warning and were about to cross the fine line into fable. They were determined to save the lives of their rebel friends, an aging mouse and their three animal godfathers.

A 21st-century "Thin Man"

"Double Blind" is notable not just for its graphic sexual passages--of which there are plenty--but for the underlying mystery that envelopes the book's anti-hero. Like Dashiell Hammett's protagonist, Hopkins Grinder uses questionable means to produce his desired ends, and in the process, he finds that the people he's manipulating have their own quasi-ethical agendas. And as in any worthy "Thin Man" installment, the trouble in "Double" arrives in the female form.
Vaughn's characters are sympathetic, if not necessarily likeable. These are people who should know better, but given their complex backstories, their lapses in judgment are both understandable and intriguing.
While "Double Blind" draws you in with ilicit sex and other amoral goodies, its intricate storylines keep you interested. In just 90 pages, Vaughn manages to say a lot about how sexual politics and family values make for strange bedfellows.

A New Kind of Erotica

Think you have heard, seen, or read everything that there is to offer on the subject of sex? If you have ever read anything like Michael J. Vaughn's "Double Blind," it would surprise me greatly. The book is about a family man, Hopkins, who has been having an affair with a mistress - for the sake of his marriage and keeping his children from a broken home. Wait - there is more. He then hires a man who knows said mistress to seduce his wife so that she will once again be pleasant. Everything goes along according to Hopkins' plan, until his wife ends up on an internet porn site. The story goes from there into realms no one would ever imagine. The plot twists are very interesting and incredibly different than what one would expect. The actual sex scenes are not the highlight of the book, unlike most fiction that fits into the erotica label. They do exist, and they are written well, but the better parts of the book deal with the fight of lust that Hopkins deals with on a day to day basis, which does not involve his wife. What separates this book from any other book about a cheating husband is that he adores and loves his children, and makes every move with their best interest in mind. It is interesting to imagine extra-marital sex to help a marriage, but this is where Vaughn shines. He is incredibly good at taking a subject that has been done over and over again to the point of banality (like sex) and making it not only intriguing, but worth doing over again. Having read other books by Vaughn ("Frosted Glass" and my particular favorite - and quite possibly my favorite book ever - "Gabriella's Voice), I was thrilled to be able to read another offering. It was very short (approx. 90 pages), but with so much plot, writing nuance, and character intrigue, it reads more like a well crafted short story/novella than a full-length novel. This feature made the book appeal to me even more - I already knew that Vaughn could write a brilliant novel, but I had yet to see his work in the shorter venues. I would love to see a collection of short stories by him eventually. I give this book four out of five stars simply for the fact that I have enjoyed other books by Vaughn more, although it may quite possibly be my own bias of subject matter. That being said, I have read other "erotica" and this is by far the most appealing book of the genre that I have read. Vaughn is a consummate writer, who puts subtle nuance into every offering. He should be read, enjoyed, and re-read often.

His ill-advised experiment to placate his unhappy wife launches a series of sexual misadventures that have both comic and dramatic effects. Grinder's dilemma is achingly human, and Vaughn makes us feel it so keenly that we can identify with Grinder in his most extreme moments. His relationship with his kids, who are particulary well drawn characters, gives him even more depth. The struggle with his seemingly neurotic wife leads to astonishing revelations and a truly original resolution. Vaughn offers no palliatives but rather a fresh and bracing look at love and family life in the 21st century. Oh, and did I mention it is also a fantastic love story?

A colorful and exciting story of strength, courage and perseverance!

From the very first words, I was wrapped up in the cleverly descriptive fashion that this story is told. With each passing chapter, alternate perspectives created an environment that enabled me to feel as though I was part of the story. The story itself smacks of familiar tones of good versus evil but with twists and turns that rely on the characters interactions with each other on many different levels.

Love, pain, hope, fear, life and death are intertwined In a thrilling dance of what inevitably becomes true focus and closure to the idea that if you have faith, no matter how how much self doubt may eat away at you, you will be victorious. Combined with colorful and thickly described surroundings and happenings, the characters of Amber and Cree succeed in weaving a story that defines their unwavering connection to each other and sweeps you into their world enveloping you as a participant of their fight to be free their world of evil.

Sonia Poynter's The Last Stored was a book I couldn't put down, this is fantastic storytelling. Swaro!

Really Well Done Story!

This was a fantastic and read! I'm so glad I found it. The adventure for Amber learning about her parents, a mysterious guy and making her way into Tali I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Many twists and turns throughout.

Loved the blooming relationship between Amber and Cree, her protector.

The author, Sonia Poynter, created a beautiful make-believe world and fun yet believeable characters through sharp, crisp words and a little bit of humor.

Drawing on classic fantasy elements, she weaves a story new and at times, breathtaking. Looking forward to reading what's next for Cree and Amber....

Pretty good.

For a Sweet Valley High book, this is pretty good. When the Wakefields and Bruce suspect that Regina has been kidnapped, they decide to take action. Slowly, the mystery unravels as tension builds up. If you liked this book, I highly recommend the "Nightmare Hall" series by Diane Hoh. Action-packed and thrilling, those books will keep you up late at night

HOSTAGE is a great book because it is sort of like a sci-fi thriller.I liked the part when Bruce was pretending to be a grocery delivery person so he could get a note taped inside a magazine to Regina Morrow,the girl being held hostage.I recommend that you read HOSTAGE by Francine Pascal
