Great read, a Page Turner

"One Month of Madness" by Joe Verwiel is a page turner! It kept me up into the wee hours of the morning. There is murder, money, sex and a mixture of characters that range from vile to honorable in a show biz world. The first mystery is trying to determine who the victim is. Then it becomes a `who done it' mystery amidst the excesses of the Hollywood set. The characters are well developed and the story is full of twists and turns and unexpected developments. I'd recommend it for an Edgar.

This is a really fun read. It had me at page 1! It has all the elements of a great book that I crave. Thrills, chills, intrigue and love! I loved the good guys and hated the bad ones. I read this book over a weekend of free time and it was exactly what I needed. It took me to a whole other place. I highly recommend this book.

Fans of the macabre, cerebral thrillers, or off-beat horror should line up for Return to the Dirt, a short story collection by Geoff Sturtevant. All three stories in this collection view death, and the business of dying, from completely different angles and keep the reader guessing with every turn of the page. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is well-written, clever, and deals with the theme of death in surprising and relevant ways.

My favorite of the three was the first short story, The Technicians. This tale features two blue collar guys and their typical work day. They've become friends and do the jobs no one else wants to do. The senior member of this team is a seasoned pro, trying to teach his hesitant young apprentice the art of the craft. The storyline is twisty and dark, but it's the relationship between the characters that really makes this story come alive. Days after reading this story, I am still thinking about it and the characters.

The second story in the collection, The Organization, takes on the issues of senior care, subsidized housing, and answers the question "Who pays for all of this?" Things have been running smoothly for years at the Colosseum Retirement Home. Low-income seniors are housed and cared for until they pass on. That is, until the grocery-delivery man, Mister Kevin, stumbles upon something much more sinister than neglect and bedsores. What follows is a wild ride deep into the underbelly of senior care and features cameos by former world leaders and B-list movie stars. 

The phrase, "You are what you eat" has never been more relevant than in the book's final story. Return to the Dirt deals with the universe-wide connections that bind us all together, and strips us down to our bare elemental components. Star-gazing, stoner-dude Chris wants to finally set aside his pot-smoking ways, join the workforce, and maybe even do a little growing up. Despite no work history or experience, he gets a job in food production and does well for a while, until his old ways catch up with him. Chris inadvertently becomes involved in a work cover-up and what he learns about his employer turns more than just his stomach.

All three stories in this collection are fascinating reads and deal with the same theme - death. I believe this book appeals to a wide audience; however I would warn readers that some scenes are quite gory and gruesome. I don't believe the author used violence or descriptions of death and dying in an overly gratuitous manner, but they are quite graphic none-the-less.

Return To The Dirt: savage social satireHooligween / May 16, 2016 
In time-honoured fashion, these three taut tales of work and death employ humour to highlight the worst aspects of human behaviour. They're sharp, savage slices of smartly observed social satire, with humour so bleak it raises blisters, so black it casts a sinister shadow on a superficially sunny existence. Each novella is entirely separate and tells its own, self-contained story, but they're linked by a definite theme. Author Geoff Sturtevant writes in an engaging, easy going tone which lulls the reader into believing these might be benign interludes of banter spiced up with a bit of bad boy business...Then the sucker punch sneaks up on your synapses. One moment you're giggling about the waste of a college education on 'The Technician' (a man who spends his days sweating in a badly-cut corporate uniform) and in the next heartbeat, there's dying bloke on the floor having his brains mushed up with a screwdriver. It's deliberately outlandish and provocative. And hugely entertaining.These gruesome and graphic stories may be short but they haven't been just dashed off in a couple of hours to fill a few pages with pretty prose. The precisely-planned storylines feature credible, well-developed three-dimensional characters. They move through fully realised alternate realities, crammed with convincing detail (like the matchbooks in 'The Technician', a lovely touch).Occasionally the plot device is apparent early on - especially in 'You Are What You Eat' which will feels entirely familiar to fans of 1970s sci-fi. But knowing where it's going doesn't spoil the fun in getting there... nor does it make any of Sturtevant's razor-sharp social observations any less cutting. Ever wondered what we're going to do with all our aging populations, how the care of old folk can possibly be financed? Sturtevant constructs a deliberately extreme solution in 'The Organisation' with a dystopian future that feels entirely familiar.It helps that he includes some wicked pen-portraits of famous folk here, too. As with the two other tales, you don't quite know whether to choke with laughter or tears - these cerebral stories are disturbing but curiously captivating, in a slo-mo car-crash kinda way. They don't necessarily say anything new, but they hammer home a message which few people want to hear. And do it in bloodily entertaining style.In short, they're a pitch-perfect combination of gob-smacking chutzpah and intelligent moral comment, where absurdity and outrage are deftly employed to illustrate some very human truths. Creepy, Dark, and at all the right times ... Funny

There are few things I appreciate more than finding a new author that I enjoy, and having additional books from them to look forward to reading.

Return to the Dirt gives us three short stories to sink our teeth into, each dealing with work and death … easily relatable themes.

Each unique tale is laced with Sturtevant’s keen observations of humanity. He has a genuine knack for cultivating relatable characters and situations. Probably my favorite aspect of his writing is the subtle, dark humor that crops up periodically, at just the right moments.

The stories aren’t comedies; however, there were multiple times I laughed aloud and read passages to my wife. I do that sometimes when a book intrigues me and, in my simple way, is one of the highest compliments I can give a writer.

I was impressed with the flowing style of his writing, and the easy manner in which I slipped right into the landscape that his prose created. Sturtevant has real promise, and I look forward to his next book.

fortunately, I seem to be have been quite lucky ...

Whenever I agree to read something by a fellow indie author, I'm always a little apprehensive in case it turns out to be awful, fortunately, I seem to be have been quite lucky as most of these books I've enjoyed reading. And once again on this occasion, I seem to be in luck as I thorougly enjoyed Return to the Dirt by Geoff Sturtevant.

Word of warning, anyone who is uncomfortable reading about blood and gore should avoid this book. The book consists of three stories, unfortunately it's a little difficult to say too much about them without giving away the ending in each case. The stories are well-written, and the action is often narrated in a humorous tone. But what I think makes this book really stand out is that these stories raise some interesting questions like: how should we treat those around us? what is the purpose of a job? is it ever right to turn a blind eye to what goes on around us? is ignorance bliss?

Not only was this book an enjoyable read, it also left me thinking about all kinds of things. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Stephen King or the Twilight Zone.

Dark, Clever, and Humerous

Being a fan of Chuck Palahniuk, I enjoyed these three novelettes by Geoff Sturtevant that gave me much of the same enjoyable clever and dark humor. I appreciated that the stories weren't too affected and contrived, instead the writing is clean and smart. As a performer and comedian, I can visualize making these short stories into short films - much like Black Mirror, the British TV series with sharp, suspenseful, dark humorous and satirical tales that examine modern society. Each story told by the main character's point of view makes it easy to read and become invested in the story. The characters are familiar and scenes are filled with bold imagery. There are both futuristic elements of science fiction and common themes of humanity. The stories were entertaining, smart, quirky and witty all without trying too hard. I look forward to more writings by the author.

Jessie Burlingame, 39, is getting plenty tired of being handcuffed to the bed of her Maine summerhouse by her attorney- husband, Gerald, so that he can play his silly sex games. So when Gerald refuses to uncuff her, she kicks him in the family jewels, accidentally smashing them to kingdom come--and the terror begins. Each hand cuffed to a bedpost, the keys out of reach, Jessie howls for help--and is answered by a feral dog that proceeds to chow down on Gerald's face in lavishly described, muscle-shredding detail. As the long hours pass, cramps bite like iron jaws into Jessie's own flesh; but they're nothing compared to the thirst raging through her. Can she somehow reach the glass of water on the shelf above her head? A Surprising Game

It was an old criticism of King's work, before "Gerald's Game" and "Dolores Claiborne" were published, that he couldn't write a convincing female character between the ages of 17 and 70. Given his penchant for writing about either young girls (Carrie White, for example, or the little girl Charlie from "Firestarter") or old women, it seemed to be a valid point for a long time.
This book, which is an excellent one for many reasons, seemed to be King's first direct response to that criticism. In it, he proves once and for all that he can write a female lead character as compelling and believeable as any of his other characters, and can tell a fine yarn at the same time.
The book starts out in surprising territory for King: a sexual game being played by Gerald Burlingame, who has just handcuffed his wife Jessie to the bed. This is not the first time this game has been played -- it's an old routine at this point, one which Jessie never particularly liked and has now grown quite bored with, to the point of frustration. She tells her husband that she doesn't want to do it this time, but he presses on. In the ensuing struggle, he has a heart attack and dies, leaving her handcuffed to the bed, in the middle of nowhere.
That's when the story really starts. King's real strength in this story is not just in telling what happens to Jessie in her predicament, but King uses this device to tell the story of how she got there in the first place. What sort of woman is Jessie? What events led her to this place, this man, this scenario? In the course of the story, as Jessie struggles to free herself from her bonds, we also find out why she is there.
Contrary to what some other reviewers have said, I found this book to be a page-turner. It kept me up very late finishing it, and once I was finished, I quite literally did not want to turn out the light. This does not happen to me often; in fact, this is the only King book that has had this effect on me. The effect is largely due to a very effective description, about halfway through the book, of something Jessie sees, or thinks she sees, in the corner of the darkened room in which she is trapped. The scene was so powerfully described that it bothered me for the next week, and inspired me to make a drawing called "Made of Moonlight," which was an attempt to exorcise the scene from my imagination. Even re-reading it now, I find that part absolutely chilling. It's one of the high points in the book, and one of King's most frightening moments in any of his work.
Bear in mind, this is not a supernatural horror novel. Its only supernatural element is a slight tie-in with events in his other "eclipse" novel, "Dolores Claiborne." "Gerald's Game" is mainly a character study, with elements of horror interspersed to keep the reader engaged. The fear, however, comes from a place that is all too real and believeable, and it comes because King has crafted such a powerful story, and such a sympathetic lead character in Jessie Burlingame.
In the end, "Gerald's Game" is not one of King's easier stories to read. It deals with some real issues, and its terrors are only too plausible. Unlike "The Shining" or "Cujo," it's difficult to put this book down at the end and convince oneself that the same thing couldn't happen to you. It's not a book about the scary monster that comes from under the bed. No, in the final analysis "Gerald's Game" is about the monsters who sleep in the bed with you, cleverly disguised, and about those monsters who were there to shape your past.

A Tense Psychological Thriller!

After finishing Gerald's Game, I feel like I have just fallen out of the visionary world Stephen King has written, and anybody can journey to it by picking up this book. From start to finish, this is psychological terror at its best, and if a person was entranced as I was they could finish this book in about 2 days if they felt the need to, because the reader just has to know the outcome to the story or he would go insane waiting to see what happens. Although Gerald's Game deals with some very controversial subject matter, such as child abuse and sex, this book is not overshadowed by the mature subject matter. This was once in fact supposed to be a movie, but the producers had no idea how to show somebody topless for the entire movie without recieving an NC-17 rating, so they just dropped the whole movie idea. Here below is a quick overview of the story and the writing:
Story: As the novel opens, we meet timid Housewife Jessie Burlingame, who is still haunted by an accident from the past, and her husband, Gerald Burlingame, the curious husband who has a slight heart problem. Both of them are vacationing at their Lake House when Gerald decides to pull out his handcuffs and test them out on Jessie. Jessie is then handcuffed to both of the bedposts, with only 6 inches of armroom allowed. With Jessie still locked up and the keys all the way across the room, Gerald suffers a fatal heart attack, leaving Jessie hopelessly handcuffed with no way to get out of the bed. As time passes, Gerald's body starts looking pretty scrumptious to a hungry stray, who ventures into the house and starts turning Gerald into Dogfood. All the while Jessie valiantly tries to get a water glass full of water off the shelf that is just barely out of her reach, but she has to try or else she fears she may just go insane. As her hunger and thirst deepens, Jessie begins having recurring dreams about her disturbing childhood that is tarnished by the memory of her father abusing her as a child. As she learns to deal with her inner demons, she soon notices demons aren't only in her dreams, but in the corner of her bedroom. A gaunt shadow stands there watching her throughout the night, and she realizes to her dismay the shadow is real. The only way Jessie can get out of her predicament is to overcome her inner demons and and try not to go mad, while at the same time she must figure out a way to get out of her impenetrable stronghold with all of her options gone except for an empty glass on the bedstand. Jessie learns to overcome fear and herself in the ultimate battle for survival.
Writing: Stephen King constantly amazes me at his always changing and everdevoloping writing styles, and with Gerald's Game, he once again he has done it. Although not as descriptive as say Cujo or The Shining, Gerald's Game describes things beautifully through similes and metaphors that are well-crafted and thought-out. What really amazes me about the writing is the relentlessness of the plot and how he sounds like the Camp Counselor telling ghost stories around the fire, increasing the tension and making you gasp once or twice for good measure. Stephen King is definitely writing in his "I Want to Tell You A Story" mode, never letting the plot lag and the story get muddled with needless subplots that have no basis. GREAT!

Autophobia for me!

I am a huge Stephen King fan, my first novel was "Firestarter" when I was in Elementary school. Despite mixed reviews, I read "Gerald's Game" and loved it. I liked it because I was told beforehand that this is not a typical King-horror story. I think if you are looking for something really gross and horrific, try "It" or "Desperation". But if you want just plain ol' keep- you-up-all-night-suspense..you'll like this one. Psychic suspense is the best. The main character, Jessie is married to a man who loves to have kinky sex. You know the type, "anywhere, anytime"... Well, he chooses a remote house , pretty much out in the middle of NOWHERE to set the scene for his latest sexual adventure. At first Jessie is into this. It seems fun to be handcuffed and be dominated, but soon the control becomes frightening. Her husband stops listening to her yelps to stop, and she sees a an "evil" in his eyes. Jessie responds in anger by "kneeing" him in an unprotected area. He then falls to the ground. DEAD. Everything now begins to happen in REAL TIME over two days, so if you read the book in two days and literally put the book down when night falls and Jessie sleeps, you BECOME a real watcher of the action, almost a participant. Jessie's relief to get her husband off her leads to a series of scary events to save her life. She calls out for help...something happens. She finds personal items on the shelf over her head...... She hears strange noises...... It's kind of like playing "MYST". How do you use your wit and skills and items in the room to free yourself? All these dilemmas are nothing compared to Jessie's own mind fighting against her. She panics, sees and hears things. Are they real? I won't spoil the fun, but I strongly suggest thinking of the story as a game...what would you do If you were Jessie? By the way....The ending was one of the strangest endings I think I have ever encountered! This is a must read for all King's fans who appreciate his different styles.

Practical advice

This is actually a helpful little book on depression. The author gives some great, straight-forward, and practical advice on how to face the demons of depression. I had to take away one star because he really could have used a good proofreader. The content is there; it's just not presented in the most professional way.

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 – October 25, 1899) was a Canadian science writer and novelist, and a proponent of the theory of evolution He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham and at Merton College in Oxford, both in the United Kingdom.After graduation, Allen studied in France, taught at Brighton College in 1870–71 and in his mid-twenties became a professor at Queen's College, a black college in Jamaica. Despitehis religious father, Allen became an agnostic and a socialist. After leaving his professorship, in 1876 he returned to England, where he turned his talents to writing, gaining a reputation for his essays on science and for literary works. His first books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). He was first influenced by associationist psychology as expounded by Alexander Bain and by Herbert Spencer, the latter often considered[by whom?] the most important individual in the transition from associationist psychology to Darwinian functionalism. In Allen's many articles on flowers and on perception in insects, Darwinian arguments replaced the old Spencerian terms. On a personal level, a long friendship that started when Allen met Spencer on his return from Jamaica grew uneasy over the years. Allen wrote a critical and revealing biographical article on Spencer that was published after Spencer's death.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Canadian-born Grant Allen was a prolific professional author of popular science texts on evolution as well as a fiction writer. The Type-Writer Girl (1897) is one of only two novels he wrote under a female pseudonym, possibly to lend credibility to his first-person female narrator. The Type-Writer Girl invokes tensions typical of the fin de siècle concerning evolution, technology, and the role of women.

Slice of life

This is a rather amusing story that falls along convention fiction patterns--at least until the end. Though the novel does address the concerns and fears of young, well-bred English women thrust into the workplace, I question whether Grant Allen wrote this book to poke fun at the working girl, or sympathizes with her. All in all, The Type-writer Girl is a quick, easy read--so don't let the publication date fool you, not every "old" book is written in the florid manner of Dickens or James.

Four years after the temporary Regent, Rudemire Klug, his ten Regional Commanders and his army had imposed enormous taxes; the crippled economy had sent Freedonia on a downward spiral into despair. Many of the citizens feel the Connors had abandoned them. Unknown to the citizens of Freedonia, the dark wizard from the east, Drake Aldric's master plan is working, with two huge exceptions. The Connors twins are still alive, and it is taking much longer than he expected to eliminate them. As long as one Connors still lives, they are the rightful heirs to the throne. This is something the dark wizard is struggling to remedy and time is running out. When Charlie Connors reaches his fifteenth birthday, he will be coming of age. : C. G. Peltier is a man of many talents. He had served as a United States Marine, has been a die maker and die designer, a tool room and press department supervisor, a machine design engineer, an experimental department engineer, and an inventor. He had founded and run a small, but successful manufacturing company for twenty-two years. The company reins have been passed on to his son, daughter, and son-in-law; he has become a YA fantasy author, go figure. Why fantasies? His daughter got him hooked on the books and movies of Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. She lent him her computer and inspired him to use his creative imagination in an entirely new way, as a fantasy author.

Loved the first two books
