Engaging and Compelling Read

I'll start by saying this is the first Amazon review I've ever written. I found this book so compelling, I felt I had to.

The author does an amazing job of pulling the reader into her story. Thoughts, feelings, and emotions are all conveyed in a way that allows the reader to share the experience. Even if you wrote a piece of fiction, you'd be hard pressed to come up with a more thought provoking story.

As a male, I think what amazed me the most was how much I was able to get out of the read. Obviously I'm not a birthmother (and unless there are some major medical advances on the horizon, it's not going to happen in this lifetime ;-) ), but there was a ton of information that I could relate to. Approaching the book with a completely open mind, I found it took me on an incredible journey, teaching me a lot in the process. I have a huge amount of respect for a mother who can be faced with arguably one of life's most difficult decisions, and still make a selfless choice.

The last section of the book (contemplation for meditation) really blew me away. Through blind trial-and-error, I managed to stumble onto some of those ideas on my own, but I couldn't help thinking how much easier it would have been if I had been able to read this book sooner. Whether young or old, female or male, this book offers something for everyone.

Truly, truly, an enjoyable read. I'll close by saying "thank you" to the author for sharing her story.

Sometimes even the dead seek salvation. 

In 1925, eighteen-year-old Ameerah Arrowood is murdered in an insane asylum. She finds herself transported to a dreary realm that turns out to be a recruiting station for the dark spirits. With animosity in her heart toward humanity, she decides to join them. 

For the next ninety years, Ameerah possesses soulless humans, living a hedonistic, mischievous and sometimes vengeful existence, but now she's seeking salvation so she can crossover and save her lost love who is stuck in the lower world. 

Ameerah enlists the help of her dark spirit friend Derek, who is straddling the line between Heaven and Hell. She tells him how it all began, weaving between historical timelines to now, hoping to gain understanding about why her parents betrayed her and wanting to get rid of the guilt weighing on her heart. In the end, the unexpected unfolds which changes Ameerah forever. 

About the Author
Rebekkah Ford is an award-winning author who writes paranormal fiction. She believes her fascination with the unknown derives from her childhood. When her parents were married, they were the directors of the UFO Investigator's League. They also investigated ghost hauntings and Bigfoot sightings in addition to extraterrestrial cases. Rebekkah's upbringing, knowledge, and experiences with the paranormal world, along with her colorful imagination, aids her in creating her stories.

Rebekkah has an irreverent sense of humor, is known to annoy her beloved cat, Church, by singing opera to him (Rebekkah is tone deaf,btw), and she believes having a dirty mind makes boring conversations more interesting.

Received this book as a gift...

Loved Ameerah's story! She grew up in the 1920's in a wealthy family. However, she didn't like the snobby types her parents hung around. Ameerah wanted to be a flapper gal, was in love her best friend and loved to drink and smoke. All things someone of her social standing should not be doing. When her parents find out about her extra curricular activities, they have her commuted to a insane asylum where she is abused, raped then murdered. How will Ameerah face life after death? I loved learning about her story and what she tells her present day best friend Derek. I will say there were some shocking moments towards the end you won't see coming. If Ameerah was a real life person/spirit, she would totally be fun to hang out with. I was definitely in her corner the entire story.

A must read!

I was given a ARC to read and review this book, and boy was I glad! Great read. Join Ameerah in the present as she recalls her past to a friend. The horrors she went thought are unimaginable. This recalling helps explain why she became a Dark Spirit! This book is a part of the Beyond the Eyes series, but can be read alone. So very well written! You'll what to get the series after you read this to enjoy a great Author's work! Rebekkah Ford is someone to watch!

I Am IN LOVE with Ameerah!! -There, I said it and I mean it!!!

I received this book for a fair, unbiased review and it was by far one of the best things I've ever done. I am absolutely in love with Ameerah!!! It is a book that is set during a very interesting time period, the Roaring Twenties, which adds so much to the charm of this book and character. It is also full of some sadness, because back in those days, they believed they could use torturous shock procedures to "fix" anything that might be wrong with you, i.e. like Ameerah actually having a "real" view on life, that I just fell in love with. Anyone who loves a good solid story, is interested in that time period, loves paranormal or any combination of all, will be MORE than pleased with this book, because it contains elements that can speak to anyone. Ameerah's mantra, if you will is "some birds cannot be caged I am one of them"-a shared sentiment between her & I for sure, so she is very easy for me to relate to. Another of my favorite quotes is the exact way I feel about life, and this shows Ameerah's incredible take on life "What I did and how I chose to live my life was my own damned business What right did they have to encroach their standards upon mine? As long as I did no harm to anyone.....well, one's who didn't deserve to suffer.....what business was it of theirs? None." Those were her thoughts and feelings when her parents decided to ambush her and drop her into an asylum for not thinking or acting properly (according to their standards). That is part of the saddness in the book, but Ameerah being as tough as she is, fights with every fiber of her being.
Rebekkah Ford has a way of painting such a visual that I feel as if I've been transported to that era and living right alongside the characters. I could fangirl and gush all over the place about this book, because there is nothing I did not enjoy about it. I do believe I have found a new favorite female character!
This novel follows in suit to her other books, with characters from them, but can most certainly be read as a standalone and still make perfect sense. Rebekkah Ford has all her ducks in a row with this one and you can tell she did some serious research with all the accurate references and language terminology she uses. It's just brilliant. The only thing I will warn you, if you read this book you will most certainly become addicted to Rebekkah Ford and I guarantee you'll be overly anxious to read her other books (which I recommend highly as well)
It is certainly a book that provokes lots of emotions and every second of it is enjoyable. I know I will re-read this book several times, just to live vicariously through Ameerah! The only thing I need right now is a Bee's Knee's drink and I'll be perfectly equipped to hang around with Ameerahs "dark spirit" after she meets her demise (sad point)
A wonderfully paced story, that is spot on for it's time period.
The only other thing I can say, is grab your copy now and I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Ameerah is a true gem, as is her creator Rebekkah Ford-you won't be able to put it down!! I can't wait to see the impact Ameerah has on the reading world because I expect nothing short fo greatness for this book!!

I hope there is a second!

 I received a free copy of Sky High in exchange for an honest review.  Earth came to near destruction after a meteor hit Old Europe.  While billions died, others still remained and forged their way into a new world.  Within the very beginning we are thrown into the futuristic and action packed life of Mark Deloite.  Mahrt does an excellent job of world building.  Mark's journey takes him throughout Skyreach - a city of endless spires and beyond.  When I first started reading Sky High, I could tell that the writing was better than some other new authors that I had encountered.  It was smoother and the dialogue was natural between the characters.
I was instantly sucked into this Government gone wrong tale.  The action was so frequent and intense, it really kept you wanting to turn the page.  We soon meet Nurse Yasmine.  Who becomes a large supporting character to Mark's journey.  While I found their first few encounters awkward, that soon turned into more natural dialogue.  Once Nurse Yasmine stays in the picture, we really start to get the story going.  Leaf is a resistance group to the Natural Selection and Agent Orange is the opposite evil.  I really thought I knew where this story was going.  That a battle between Leaf and Agent Orange would become the center.
Without giving to much away, I was dead wrong.  There is a significant twist toward the middle-end that I think really elevated this story.  The energy really picked up and I was eager to keep reading.  Many small elements mentioned in the beginning start to tie in and really bring Mark's character and several other characters to their full potential.  The only qualms I had were the names of some of the characters.  For a futuristic book, I felt that Mark was rather simple.  Commander Lawful also just didn't seem to fit either.  Aside from that small thing,  I believe Mahrt is on to something great and into young readers hands it can really take off.  I hope there is a second because this story is definitely not over!

Technical skill, but unmemorable story.

Sky High by Helge Mahrt is a well-written look into a future in which we neither managed to expand to other planets nor did we blow ourselves to bits and now exist in a post-apocalyptic world. It was kind of refreshing to read a different scenario for once. It is, disturbingly, also too easy to see a potential reality in the world which Helge Mahrt gives us. “Progress” is inevitable and humanity’s growth as a whole makes rabbit breeding look slow.

I guess my issue with this book is that, ultimately, while it was well-written, it never managed to engage me. It was another case where I felt like I’d skimmed the book, even though I’d read every word of it, because I never once was able to actually immerse myself in the story. While Sky High does have a few twists you don’t expect in it, it feels almost completely predictable, both in plot and characters. As the story unfolded, I found myself mentally checking off tropes in my head. I mean, there’s everything from the plucky young protagonist who finds out he’s special in a certain way, to the big bad government conspiracy.

Mahrt has technical skill. The story flowed very smoothly, and his descriptions were such that I was easily able to envision the world that he had created. It was also edited well, which I definitely appreciated. For a debut novel, this is not a bad piece of work at all. But, you can tell it is a debut novel. Actually, as a novel overall, this isn’t bad. It’s just not a book that stands out in any way other than the setting, and even that isn’t truly unique (but, in writing anymore, what is? Everything’s been done hundreds – if not thousands – of times).

Overall, Sky High is a book worth checking out, and I’m sure many people will like it. I don’t dislike it. I just don’t care much either way about it.

Wonderful! Recommend for young adult and adult science fiction fans

When I started reading Sky High, I did not know what to expect in terms of complexity because I have never really read books categorized as "YA science fiction." I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the plot and setting are quite complex and intricate.

The action in the book begins almost immediately, but Mahrt manages to fill readers in on Earth's history and explain the pertinent issues before thrusting readers into the action. What explanations that the author does not give readers at the beginning of the book are included when they are relevant, without slowing the story down.

Mahrt's writing is precise; with the complex plot and well-developed characters, the book could have easily exceeded 500 pages, but he managed to describe an intricate world and society in 215 pages. If that is not impressive enough, Mahrt provides a very satisfying end to the plot while leaving readers wanting to read more of his work.

I think that categorizing Sky High as a "YA science fiction" novel does it a disservice. The author's language is clear and concise, making it easier for younger readers to comprehend; however, the plot and setting are sophisticated enough that adult readers of science fiction should not dismiss it offhand.

It is definitely worth reading, and I recommend Sky High for both young adult and adult science fiction fans.

An Interesting Tale not to be missed

I got this book as a free download, even though I wasn't quiet sure what to expect, what I found was a very funny and charming read, which I highly recomment. I loved the storyline, never stand in the way of a woman on a mission, the complex and interesting characters, who each tried to outwit the other with interesting results. The story that was related through a narrator was well written and beautifully told and I can't wait to find out what will happen next.

Perfect Read for the Busy Person Who Wants Entertainment

This is a quick easy read. Perfect for the busy person. The writing is well crafted. It reminds me of the convoluted plot of an old screwball comedy. Sometimes you can't tell the players without a scorecard.

There is constant action with many layers of deception and scheming for such a short book. There are plenty of twists and turns to engage the reader with a sprinkling of humor.

The characters are well developed and unique. You can't help but like some of them and root for their success in spite of their deceptions.

The one fault I found with the book was that it felt unfinished at the end. I realize that there will be additional volumes that I am looking forward to reading but I just felt as if this book ended instead of having an ending. But that is a small criticism in relation to the whole book, and the fact there will be another volume to come.

Biddle is a poor young single mother in a cheap hotel with practically ...

M.E. Meegs is a fictional character who writes about the adventures of her friend and/or enemy (does it make sense at all?).

The story starts with a strong Dickens vibe; somehow it reminds me of Oliver Twist in spirit: Mrs. Biddle is a poor young single mother in a cheap hotel with practically no money to support herself and her baby... If you think you know where it goes, you are wrong. The moment the poor mother leave the hotel the story takes a completely unexpected turn. Let me just quote a part of the book description (very appropriate one, too):

In the dank attic room of a squalid inn on the north coast of France, a young and penniless American woman, only recently recovered from a difficult birth, yearns for home. May God help those who stand in her way...

I mentioned that I had no idea what to expect from this book; I had some vague notion that it was an over-the-top historic romance. I was pleasantly surprised as it turned out to be a very easy over-the-top read in spirit of classic stories from The Gentle Grafter collection by O. Henry. This is a fun read which while occasionally slows down is never boring and I was always curious about what would happen next. The slowdowns are mostly due to M.E. Meegs by getting in the way of her own story.

A group of con artists try to out-con each other and everybody else; the best and the most devious ones would win. The closest thing I could think of was a classic Italian comedy called - unsurprisingly - The Con Artists (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Con_Artists).

I can also give you one hint without spoiling much: Mrs. Biddle is very competent when it comes to getting what she wants, by using any means necessary.

All the con artists in question have no trace of conscience whatsoever and as such it seems hard to root for any of them initially. To my complete surprise some grew on me and I found myself caring about them - enough to wish their side would win.

I usually try to say something witty and funny in my reviews, but in this case I let the book do it for me. The slow parts I mentioned above are the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. I look forward to reading next installment of Mrs. Biddle adventures written by the new and promising author M.E. Meegs.
