About the Author
Like many of my siblings, I would sneak out of bed, slip into the hallway, and pull my favorite books from the book closet. I read my way through the bottom shelf, then the next shelf up, and the shelf above that, until I could climb to the very top shelf, stacked two layers deep and two layers high, and read the titles of the classics. My desire to create stories grew as I was learning to read them. Subsequently, I spent my time scribbling in notebooks rather than listening to math lectures at school. I graduated with a degree in literary studies, and have spent several years working on the novels that keep pounding on the doors of my mind, as none of my characters are very patient to wait their turn. I currently live in Orem, Utah, with my wonderful chemist husband, and books in every room of the house.

New book, promising new author

The Queen's Gambit called to my mind Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. In his book, he explains a hero journey that is often found in books of a mythic quality. In a hero journey, a character is called to an adventure by a gatekeeper and leaves home to experience the adventure. The character goes through multiple difficult experiences that transform him or her until she or he goes through the final trial, which is called "the belly of the whale" and requires great personal sacrifice. This sacrifice creates a hero of the character and enables him or her to go home and bestow a boon. The Queen's Gambit seems to be a dual mythical hero journey with two leaders from two very different and suddenly antagonistic nations being thrust into adventures with and by each other that will likely cause them to grow personally and to (perhaps) save their homelands. As is typical for hero journeys, the two characters in Gambit, Wil and Eleanor, are young and orphans--almost. (Wil's father is still alive, but their relationship is strained.) The two hold quite different views from one another: Queen Eleanor holding forth values of community, unity, gentleness, deliberation, study, and affection; and "Wil" seemingly favoring might, force, and control. The characters are not flat, however, and both have uncertainties they are dealing with that require them to dig deeper. Eleanor looks to Wil to help her train her army and to ancient scrolls from her enemies' homeland for answers in how to understand and defend against them. Wil seems to be looking for a way out of his warring past and is given a full tour of the virtues of Eleanor's peaceful nation, which leaves him to some degree (to what degree I am not sure), loving his enemies. This book is written very much from the perspective of Eleanor's country, and we have many holes to be filled in about Wil and his country in the next book. Gambit ends, however, with Eleanor entering (I presume), the belly of the whale as she sacrifices herself and becomes at the mercy of foreign invaders. There is much still to read to know if these two main characters will complete their journeys and find themselves and their lands elevated or if things will go badly.
I read The Queen's Gambit too fast to give a complete or deeply thought out commentary on it. But it is important for me as a reader, when I spend any amount of time on a book to find themes that are thought-provoking and noble. Otherwise, I tend to end my reading feeling my time was lost and that I cheated myself. I feel The Queen's Gambit aims for more than just to entertain, and I felt good about having read it. I pulled out some themes that were developing in it and will probably continue to develop in the coming books. One was that of honor. Wil leaves home on his hero journey with a reminder that his duty is to be honorable. Yet he masks his true identity and leaves Eleanor feeling betrayed as the book ends. His is a complex problem of whom to honor, honoring oneself, honoring others, honoring tradition (or not), honoring other nations, and honoring basic human rights and needs. Another theme I considered while reading was the nature of strength. Wil's country is far stronger in size, numbers and in fighting ability than Eleanor's. But there is a questioning of that kind of forceful strength. Eleanor's country seems to be strong within itself because of its virtuous living, industry, natural resources, thoughtfulness, and unity. Her small community is able to bring to pass a big, unpredictable victory of sorts, "exploding:" the chance for their enemies to attack, while Wil's overwhelmingly stronger war camp seems to be ready to implode. Another theme that I enjoyed was that of pondering. Eleanor takes time to ponder and consider her actions. Sometimes this is time she really doesn't have, but it is her way. She also takes time to translate texts, which allows a deeper, slower pondering. This is another source of potent power that has nothing to do with physical strength and that is accessible to those who will allow themselves to do it. Hers is an effort to understand, not to overwhelm. Another theme is leadership. Who leads and how? How much responsibility rests upon a leader and how much responsibility should be shared? Another theme is trust. Eleanor tends to trust quickly in some ways, leaving herself unencumbered by fears. Is this a mistake? Or is it all for the best?
Anyway, this is getting long and cumbersome for you readers who just want to know if it was a good book. Yes. It was was. I was left very much ready to read the second book. There was enough description to engage my imagination and allow me to feel my feet under me, going along with the characters as they had their experience. I felt emotions which brought enjoyment and engagement--concern, discomfort, uncertainty, sorrow, curiosity. I am proud of the author and wish her the best in her continued literary efforts.

I loved this book

I loved this book. It is an engaging read, with characters I enjoyed, and loved getting to know. The author does a nice job developing not only the characters, but also the culture of this small, peaceful country suddenly and unexpectedly on the brink of war. Can't wait for the next book to come out!

Brilliant characters and storytelling

This is not the usual book I run to- so I was surprised to enjoy this so much. I usually read historic/regency romance (guilty!). The beginning focused a lot on character and world building- but at a good steady pace. There was enough suspense and questions at the beginning that I was interested to get through the book. The romance that built throughout the book was real and enjoyable. The last hundred pages I could not put down! I'm so curious what will happen in the next book between Eleanor and Wil!
I enjoyed the characters the most- they felt very three dimensional with long stories to tell. Without giving anything away, the author left a lot untold about Wil's past that I hope will be answered next book. I also think Eleanor will really grow in the next book considering how the first ended. Looking forward to the Ruby Prince!
