A 21st-century "Thin Man"

"Double Blind" is notable not just for its graphic sexual passages--of which there are plenty--but for the underlying mystery that envelopes the book's anti-hero. Like Dashiell Hammett's protagonist, Hopkins Grinder uses questionable means to produce his desired ends, and in the process, he finds that the people he's manipulating have their own quasi-ethical agendas. And as in any worthy "Thin Man" installment, the trouble in "Double" arrives in the female form.
Vaughn's characters are sympathetic, if not necessarily likeable. These are people who should know better, but given their complex backstories, their lapses in judgment are both understandable and intriguing.
While "Double Blind" draws you in with ilicit sex and other amoral goodies, its intricate storylines keep you interested. In just 90 pages, Vaughn manages to say a lot about how sexual politics and family values make for strange bedfellows.

A New Kind of Erotica

Think you have heard, seen, or read everything that there is to offer on the subject of sex? If you have ever read anything like Michael J. Vaughn's "Double Blind," it would surprise me greatly. The book is about a family man, Hopkins, who has been having an affair with a mistress - for the sake of his marriage and keeping his children from a broken home. Wait - there is more. He then hires a man who knows said mistress to seduce his wife so that she will once again be pleasant. Everything goes along according to Hopkins' plan, until his wife ends up on an internet porn site. The story goes from there into realms no one would ever imagine. The plot twists are very interesting and incredibly different than what one would expect. The actual sex scenes are not the highlight of the book, unlike most fiction that fits into the erotica label. They do exist, and they are written well, but the better parts of the book deal with the fight of lust that Hopkins deals with on a day to day basis, which does not involve his wife. What separates this book from any other book about a cheating husband is that he adores and loves his children, and makes every move with their best interest in mind. It is interesting to imagine extra-marital sex to help a marriage, but this is where Vaughn shines. He is incredibly good at taking a subject that has been done over and over again to the point of banality (like sex) and making it not only intriguing, but worth doing over again. Having read other books by Vaughn ("Frosted Glass" and my particular favorite - and quite possibly my favorite book ever - "Gabriella's Voice), I was thrilled to be able to read another offering. It was very short (approx. 90 pages), but with so much plot, writing nuance, and character intrigue, it reads more like a well crafted short story/novella than a full-length novel. This feature made the book appeal to me even more - I already knew that Vaughn could write a brilliant novel, but I had yet to see his work in the shorter venues. I would love to see a collection of short stories by him eventually. I give this book four out of five stars simply for the fact that I have enjoyed other books by Vaughn more, although it may quite possibly be my own bias of subject matter. That being said, I have read other "erotica" and this is by far the most appealing book of the genre that I have read. Vaughn is a consummate writer, who puts subtle nuance into every offering. He should be read, enjoyed, and re-read often.

Double Blind a New Vision of Love and Family

In Double Blind, Vaughn fearlessly confronts the nagging ambiguities of love, monogamy, sex, and family in the age of the Internet. And has a hell of a time doing it. His protagonist, Hopkins Grinder, a sexually adventurous geneticist, endures a moribund marriage for the sake of his kids. His ill-advised experiment to placate his unhappy wife launches a series of sexual misadventures that have both comic and dramatic effects. Grinder's dilemma is achingly human, and Vaughn makes us feel it so keenly that we can identify with Grinder in his most extreme moments. His relationship with his kids, who are particulary well drawn characters, gives him even more depth. The struggle with his seemingly neurotic wife leads to astonishing revelations and a truly original resolution. Vaughn offers no palliatives but rather a fresh and bracing look at love and family life in the 21st century. Oh, and did I mention it is also a fantastic love story?
