And sure, maybe none of us has even been past the mountains or beyond the Withergrounds––but that's besides the point. Yes, friends, by process of elimination, by virtue of forfeit by all contenders, the Sarpsis Valley is the best damn place there could possibly be. Well, at least it was…Hasn't rained in a few years. And uh––river's shrinking a bit. Ground's kinda dry. But any day now it's gonna rain! Right around the corner! Biscuit's wings are twitching cause he thinks he feels a wetness on the wind, and all eight of Turnaround's eyes are peeled for clouds. Yep. Any day now it's gonna rain and everything is gonna to be alright––so mount the oars, hoist a sail, and fill your pockets full of worms because any day now the fishing is gonna be as good as it was, and all the best spots'll be taken.
P.S. The funniest thing's just happened! Some people came from up in The Fuss, and you know what, they don't seem so bad after all! They made it rain, and they got these seeds that grow to plants in less than an afternoon! Some people are jittery about it, but hell, Biscuit says this is no world for cowards. Forrester thinks the people from upriver look at at the strange kids funny, that they look at Biscuit's wings like candy and at Blonde John's digging claws like they're a present or something. But anyway––it's damn good to see things getting back on track, however it has to happen.
P.P.S. Some more new people came from up the river, and they said they came to help too! People from upriver sure are helpful. Valley's getting a bit crowded, but hell––you're still invited.

Really liked the meshing of the weird science-fiction elements against the more grounded characters and relationships. I think it strikes a good balance and it kept me engaged throughout. I might have had one or two anxiety attacks while reading, but I mean that in a good way.

Why don't more people write like this anymore??

It’s not only the thoughtful and evocative prose in this book or the compelling interweaving plot lines that makes it worthy of a 5 star review - above all else, it’s the characters. There are a handful of main characters in ‘Upriver, Downriver’, and the author made me care about every single one of them.
The phrase ‘coming of age’ is slapped onto so many lukewarm portrayals of growing up these days, but this story nails it. The nuanced mindsets of these very disctinctive teenagers - and of the adult characters, too - anchors what could’ve been a predictable dystopian tale into something that truly resonates with reality.
There are sci-fi elements to the book, and they are refreshingly innovative, but this author’s insight into human nature is at the heart of it, and is what makes ‘Upriver, Downriver’ a must read regardless of the genres you typically stick to. It’s a story about kids navigating friendships, family, budding romances, and the different ways they respond to the outside forces that threaten that.

This book is magic.

Upriver, Downriver is a story that rebels against classification. Is it a light-hearted coming-of-age tale about a kids living a placid next to river, yet always managing to get into trouble, like "Tom Sawyer"? Is it Dickensian tale about how stubbornness, greed, and crimes committed long ago can rot a community from the inside out? Or is a science-fiction tale of kids with strange mutations that draw the eye of corporations eager to exploit as new weapons in a war that has ravaged the Earth since time out of mind?
The story is all those thing and more. That this is author Aaron Ward's first published novel is impressive. The cast of characters (number in the dozens) are fully realized people. The pacing of the story is methodical, slowly escalating in tension as old crimes are uncovered and new mysteries presented. And the prose is polished to a shine; a book with this many story arcs is a feat some established authors would struggle to pull to together, but Ward weaves the threads of his tale like a season pro. It calls to mind Stephen King's stories centered on kids, such as "The Body" or It. Nostalgic at first, but with sinister undertones lurking in the shadows.
So what ~is~ Upriver, Downriver? I think it can best be described as "magic". It's a portal into a world not too dissimilar to our own, but one whose inhabitants will be rattling around in your head long after you've finished the tale. I unreservedly recommend it, and cannot wait to read what's next from Aaron Ward.
