Ordeal by Sea, first published in 1963, is the moving account of the World War Two-era cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis and her crew. On July 30, 1945, after delivering parts for the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the U.S. base at Tinian, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58. The Indianapolis disappeared beneath the surface of the Pacific in a mere 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, about 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 900 men faced exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks while floating in the water; there were few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 crewmen would survive in what remains the worst single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. Author Thomas Helm served on the Indianapolis before the war and conducted numerous interviews with surviving crew to prepare the book. Included are 16 pages of photographs. (Note that this print edition does not contain a later addition by Capt. William Toti, USN, who discussed efforts to clear the name of Indianapolis captain Charles McVay.)

Rekindled Interest in America's Worst At-Sea Naval Tragedy

Interestingly, this book is not a collaboration between Thomas Helm and Capt. Toti. Mr. Helm released this book to the public in the early 60's. What makes this reissue worth reading and owning (in addition to the inherent worth of the original manuscript it houses) is the forward and afterward by Capt. Toti, written within the last six months (eg., George W. Bush is already President) and specific to the ongoing efforts of many Indianapolis survivors to clear the name of Capt. McVay once and for all in the eyes of American history. If you have never read or studied anything about the ordeal of the Indianapolis (except of course, maybe for Robert Shaw's description in "Jaws") then this is a very readable, very human history written by a one-time Indianapolis crewmember. However, if you have read this or other accounts of the tragedy (or perhaps remember some of the subsequent sensationalized controversy through the years including the court-martial of the Indy's Captain) then you'll enjoy this book all the more owing to the fact that the retiring Captain of the Indy's latest and perhaps last namesake (a decommissioned nuclear submarine) had been approached by the original survivors of the cruiser Indianapolis and asked to help clear the memory of Capt. McVay (who had committed suicide in the late sixties) within their lifetimes. The result is this book. I won't give away "the ending" (ie., paraphrase Capt. Toti's conclusions), but the result is a measured and honest discussion during which Capt. Toti shares his thinking on the subject as well as his feelings in a brutally frank and unhindered manner. This story may well reach out to you from the distance of ocean and time on the basis of its own human interest, but as Capt. Toti very potently identified, the repercussions of the tragedy of the Indianapolis and especially its aftermath have had a direct bearing in our more recent past, specifically the manner in which the Navy chose to handle issues surrounding the recent USS Cole tragedy. I feel that this offering deserves five stars because it's a shade more than a history book even at this early period of its issue. This book is attempting to involve itself in the continuing historical evolution of its subject, and for (in each author's opinions) urgent and timely reasons well-conveyed by both writers, even across the span of the nearly fourty years between them. Intentions and agendas aside, Helm writes simply, clearly, and easily. At 200 or so pages, it's not a hard read; the story flows, the details simple and graphic, and it's easy to follow. You should own it if you're interested in naval history (incl. WWII) or collect survival-at-sea stories (which is really what first attracted me to the book). Alternatively, it's a reasonably casual read if you want a change-of-pace WWII nostalgia book this summer and you've had your fill of Pearl Harbor... (but I'm not so sure I'd read it at the beach though).

If you've read Stanton's book, you will find that even though it covers the same topic as this one, the two books are not duplicative. There is little overlap in the survivors interviewed by Thomas Helm for "Ordeal by Sea" and those interviewed by Stanton. Consequently, reading both books gives you a more complete picture of this poignant historical tragedy. The story is an amazing one - 317 men surviving in the open water for 4 days during the closing days of the war in the pacific. It is a tale of unimaginable horrors and incredible bravery. Helm's narrative can be rather choppy, but the variety of first-hand accounts in the book are a valuable contribution to the historical record.

Leaves Out Some Important Details

I've read several books about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and I would rate Ordeal By Sea as only average. Mr. Helm does a good job of explaining the sinking itself, and the story of the survivors in the water is well-done, but some aspects are either complelely left out, or they are barely mentioned. These events, such as McVay's request and subsequent denial of a destroyer escort, failure to alert McVay about the recent sinking of an American destroyer along his proposed route, the ignoring by the navy of an intercepted message from the I-58 stating that she had sunk an American battleship, and the huge mess up regarding the departure and arrival of the Indianapolis are barely touched upon. Also, Mr. Helm devotes only a few pages of text to McVay's court martial procedure. While the book does a good job of telling about the sinking, abandoning, and struggle of the survivors, I was disappointed about the omission of the vital events leading up to the sinking. However, the author of the afterword, William J. Toti, does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed on the recent efforts by the survivors to get McVay's name cleared. I would recommend "In Harm's Way" by Doug Stanton over this book.

You won't be able to put this book down for a minute.

Tempest is the third book in the Wings of War Series, with Ember, who happens to be a very special watcher of angelic lineage. Her unique abilities and powers can be pulled from all four elements whenever she needs them to fight the coming apocalypse from happening with the help of her amazing friends, growlers, and other special souls, all of whom will grab on to a piece of your soul...just like they have mine. So much action you won't be able to set this one down for a minute. ...But... I am not happy at all with what happens to Sawyer in this book, and am hoping for a miracle. The last installment should be a nail biter!! And I am eagerly awaiting book four!!!!

Intense and full of tension. The lines of right and wrong are blurred. Absolutely amazing series. But be prepared to shed a few tears, especially the last few chapters!

This series is packed with Angels, Demons, Purgatory, magic, monsters, Watchers, Growlers, a hot forbidden romance, dragons, steamy moments, heart-breaking moments, action and adventure.

Looking forward to the next book, Eternity.

Very intense and enthralling!! I grew up reading Stephen King and Dean Koontz, etc. so it takes quite a story to keep me on the edge of my seat - this one did, from beginning to end. I'm really glad that this is the start of a series because I'd love to hear more about Jack and the Keepers.

Norris delves deep into to the characters and ideas that make up Harry's magical universe and thoughtfully deconstructs how each piece works together. Written originally as a thesis, it makes an articulate argument and leaves you thinking on your own about how the series has, literarily speaking, flourished and the cogs that made it so. It's not overly long, but in its modest length it gives a glimps into the world of Harry Potter. You won't be disappointed.

Russell J. Sanders is a lifelong devotee of the theater. He's a singer, actor, and director, winning awards for his acting roles and shows he has directed. As a teacher, he has taught theater arts to hundreds of students, plus he's also taught literature and writing to thousands of others. Russell has also traveled the world, visiting Indonesia, Japan, India, Canada, the Caribbean, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Florence, and Venice-and almost all the US states. His friends think he's crazy, but wherever he goes, he seeks out Mexican restaurants. The Mexican food in Tokyo was great, he says; in Rome, not so good. Texans cut their teeth on barbecue and Mexican food. Russell's love for enchiladas led him on a quest to try them wherever he can find them, and he has found them in some very out-of-the-way places. And good or bad, he's delighted to sample his favorite food. Rockin ending

Coming from this old, white, straight lady, this book was amazing. I literally could not put it down. The insight into the character's emotions made me feel as though I were also feeling all of his pain. The ending was extraordinary. Anyone would benefit from reading this book. I will be anxiously awaiting the next.

In response to this abuse of power and the love of a boy for his pastor

There are no spoilers in my remarks. I’m not going to synopsize ‘Colors’. Others have already done that on various review sites.
‘Colors’, by Russell Sanders, is a novel written primarily for young adults. It is written in the first person, a voice, which, if handled well, lets the author explore the immediacy of the main character’s actions, his motives and especially, his emotions. Being a story about a teenage boy those emotions are naturally kaleidoscopic. The story opens in a church sanctuary. Brother Gramm is ‘slobbering’ over nine-year old Neil Darrien’s naked genitals. All the while Brother Gramm is telling Neil that he likes it—does he? Neil is ashamed, frightened, angry, and confused. At nine years of age he’s certainly capable of feeling sexual pleasure, even if he doesn’t quite understand it entirely. You see what I mean by kaleidoscopic. In response to this abuse of power and the love of a boy for his pastor, young Neil concentrates on the refracted light streaming in from the church’s stained glass windows, anything to distract him, to blot out what is actually happening; Red Green Yellow Blue Orange Purple. Over and over and over, thus Colors.
As I read the first chapter of ‘Colors’ I sensed where Russell Sanders was going. I was right.
The complex emotions that swirl around the sex act itself, described only once in full detail, are not revived in this story through Neil’s conscious memory but rather through the intangible colors of splintered light. How does Russell Sanders do it? One word, envoi. Envoi is a device often used in poetry; think Alfred Noyes, or Dylan Thomas, and especially Edgar Allen Poe. However, an envoi is not common in prose and yet Sanders uses it, dare I say revels in it, in ‘Colors’. Red Green Yellow Blue Orange Purple, Sanders employs no less than seven envois in various combinations in the first chapter of ‘Colors’. Throughout the story Neil, now eighteen, is haunted by the memory of his betrayal, made all the more evident through the colors that surround him in the foyer atrium of his high school, or the sanctuary of a church. For me, the colors represented the prism of Neil’s heart, its fears, hopes, and dreams, and yes, denial and desire.
‘Colors’ is a well-crafted story for any young adult, whether gay or straight, and that is why I recommend it.

Wow! This book was amazing. It totally blew me away. I could see the author had talent when I read The Book of Ethan but Colors was even more fantastic.

There are some touchy subjects in the book but they are handled skillfully and realistically and never for titillation.

The main character is Neil Darrien, a budding musical theater star. His life isn’t too bad. He has a girlfriend and a scholarship to an excellent school. He’s also got a secretive past he’d rather forget. Nine years before he was molested by his church’s pastor. It was before the death of his parents and he want to live with his aunt and he’s sure he can leave it in the past.

Things in his well-organized life are shaken up when a new student comes to town and joins the show choir. Zane Jeffrey is unique, a true one of a kind character and he Neil become good friends very quickly. Unfortunately, Neil’s girlfriend, Melissa, isn’t as enamored with Zane as Neil is.

I adored Neil and Zane very much and found them to be original and true to life. Melissa, not so much. She’s somewhat of the stereotypical bitch we see so much in this genre. I gave her some slack because she is a teenager but she just wasn’t a pleasant person. She played with Neil’s emotions and emotionally blackmailed him more than once to get what she wanted and never cared how it affected him.

Despite Neil’s aversion to church and all things religion Neil agrees to perform a song at Melissa’s church. That leads to another performance and then he joins to choir and that leads to a show featuring Neil and Melissa. Each time he performs he has to deal with the colors from the stain glassed windows. It was those colors he focused on while he was being molested.

While Neil is dealing with his performances and relationship with Melissa, his friendship with Zane intensifies. Neil begins to suspect that not only is Zane gay but that he, himself, is as well. He doesn’t have anything against homosexuality but he doesn’t want to think he was made gay because of what happened to him.

The truth about Neil’s abuse comes to light in a very public and absolutely perfect way. He doesn’t come clean because he needs to open up but because he sees the pastor is still up to his old ways.

It was Neil’s decision that made me love him more than I already had. And how the people around him react to that news that set my decisions regarding them. Melissa—Evil. Zane—Amazing. And Neil’s Aunt Jenny—I loved her so much I wish she was my aunt.

I’m not usually a fan of present tense but it didn’t bother me here whatsoever. It wasn’t jarring and actually worked perfectly for Neil’s voice.

This was a unique plot and the entire world was well-thought out; teachers, friends, other students. Except for Melissa there were no stereotypical or cardboard characters.

My one complaint are the short passages that show Zane communicating with his friend Cara. I found them jarring and they pulled me out of the story. But they didn’t ruin the story at all.

Amazing story. Beautifully written. Simply incredible.

Amazing World Building, Questionable Characters

**Mild Spoilers Ahead**

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, but the premise had me hooked from the start. Hands down, Jordan Elizabeth’s greatest strength is her world building. She is effortlessly immersive in her style, and the steampunk fantasy world of Cogling truly came alive for me.

At only 15 years of age, Edna shoulders many burdens, whether it be earning money to support her family, taking care of her younger brother or worrying about the state of her country. She’s far kinder to other species kept as slaves, and her kindness throughout the book helps her get out of some particularly difficult scrapes. Many of these scrapes come out as tense action sequences, both magical and/or violent, and Elizabeth has a particular gift for writing a gripping action sequence.

I did find the more emotional passages to be a little stilted. When I originally began the book, I thought it was intended for more ambitious middle grade readers. The internal monologues and narration felt aimed towards a much younger reader than the violence at the end is suitable for. The romance felt very arbitrary at first, but by the end I really enjoyed their interactions.

I take serious issue with the doctor who seemed to exist only to insert sexual assault as another violence in the narrative. It truly felt random and was never dealt with again. They rescued their friend, stuck a complete stranger in there to be assaulted instead and moved on with their lives. Especially when recommending this book to someone, I think this brief character and set of choices should be strongly kept in mind.

I was deeply disappointed in the end of the book. Our heroes seem to have plotted a mini-genocide, and then instead of dealing with any of the social issues that have been so close to Edna’s heart through the book, she finally gets to live a life of luxury with her family. That’s the end. I was completely surprised that there was no talk of social reform, no moving forward with the king to release the slaves or help the poor- just a giant party.

I would say this book is well suited for more mature middle grade readers as well as high school. I do recommend this book because I think that authors with a talent for world building like Elizabeth are hard to find- if you like steampunk or fantasy you will love being immersed in Cogling.

Interesting world, disappointing execution

It started out so well. I loved the steampunk-ish, Dickensian world. The plot had some nice peaks and valleys.

But a lot about this book just didn’t wow me. Edna’s desperation to recover her brother at all odds really isn’t explained, except that she doesn’t feel “the evil” insider her so much when he’s around. So he’s basically your teddy bear but you don’t necessarily love him? And the author tried to be so coy about “the evil”, but it was quite obvious. Then, when she reveals what it is and where it came from, it’s really no big deal and Edna easily accepts it.

The falling action is much too neat and tidy, with no real justification for how it came about. Edna and Ike fall into a relationship far too easily. If a boy was sticking his tongue in my mouth the first time he kissed me, I’d smack him. It’s almost as if the author was told to “steam things up a little.”

There are some nice twists and turns. The narrative style is fine, although the editing really gets worse toward the end—lots of very obvious typos. This is not labeled as a pre-release galley; I hope this got cleared up. There was also a rather obvious continuity error,

The cover is beautiful, and I quite like the design of the chapter dividers.

Possible Objectionable Material:
Kissing scenes, chase scenes, peril and imprisonment.

Definitely a middle/YA audience. Readers of either gender. Steampunk fans. Approximate Lexile: 670

Recommended and can be read by people of all ages

YA, Steampunk, PNR, adventure and has some fantasy thrown into the mix. This is a novel that will appeal to all ages and I’d be happy handing it off to my kids to read, as I would recommending it to anyone who enjoys the above genres.

Cogling centers around Edna, our pithy, sometimes mean-spirited, but always good hearted, fifteen year old heroine. Oh, how I love her!

Set in an era similar to the Victorian period, Edna and her family are poor working class, just above the homeless on the street. Her mother works in a dancehall at all hours and her father works away on the rail station.

Edna is charged with taking care of her younger brother, Harrison, and while she is sometimes gruff with him, she loves him. They work for the local nobility, the Waxman’s, and although Edna doesn’t particularly enjoy her work or employers, they need the money to keep a roof over their heads.

In a magical land where hags roam, trolls are in swamps, legends abound, and old wars are unresolved, Harrison goes missing and is replaced by a Cogling: a magical, mechanical replacement. Cottoning onto the ruse, Edna sets out to reclaim her brother, setting in motion a chain of events that will change her life forever.

She meets Ike, a thief with talents, depths, and secrets, but can also lead her to Harrison. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed Edna and Ike’s interactions. Edna was at her pithiest, suspicious best here as well as at her sweetest.

This was a darn good read. I basically sat down and read it in one setting. I also enjoyed how Mierek didn’t shirk away from the issues where stratification shapes a society and not for the better. This period is often romanticized and we tend to overlook how abysmal life could be for those at the bottom or deemed less than. Also, social hierarchies are often illusory and can be stripped away by a lie as one character finds out.

I enjoyed all the characters in this story, even the bad ones and also, including the spoilt and sharp tongued, Rachel. Even though, at times, I wanted to brain her.

One question: Silver. What happened to him?

"Dig."

I found Blue Bucket in my mailbox at a time when I needed to escape into the pages of a good read. As I settled in to join this mysterious journey "Out West" I found myself quickly slipping into the story of characters twisting themselves into the world in raw and ragged humanness. Lockwood lets us wander through the officially weird but secretly familiar undercurrent of a community with the reticent J as he follows an old friend to Bend, Oregon. Before we know it we're submerged in the stories of people, revealed to the reader through trickling secrets and floods of drunken transparency. Blue Bucket untangles a web of connection that will likely leave your head spinning as you retrace the paths and wonder how you didn't see that coming... A highly satisfying cover-to-cover weekend indulgence.

Egad is right!

I’ve never read a book anything like this one. So earthy, daring, outrageous, surprising, deft, hilarious and creepy that, terrified as I was, I could not put it down, Like a great magician choreographing his trick, the author masterfully weaves his strange story through perfectly timed blurts, teases and twists. You will want to run, not walk, to the nearest book signing to find out what sort of cool, weird human could have produced this uniquely compelling gallivant!

Egads!! This book was an unexpected ride....

I really enjoyed this book and am still haunted by it a couple days later.

Initially, the author gives out information about the characters sparingly, but when all is finally revealed...wow!!

It's a great work of fiction with a great cast of flawed characters, beautiful scenery and some "dangling matters".

Glad I purchased this book and will definitely read it again.

It is the early 1970s, in the affluent town of Westport, Connecticut. Hank Latour finds himself in an unhappy marriage, disconnected from his two teenage daughters, paralyzed in a mid-level career as a bank officer, and in debt.

Tempted to make BIG money – FAST, Hank invests his savings in a new residential real estate development. But more money is needed. His bank is not willing to authorize a loan to the developers so Hank unexpectedly has the added burden to help deliver cash and momentum to this real estate project. Unable to find another source, he borrows the money from a loan shark.

At the same time, Hank struggles with his relationships in his family, as each individual develops in their own way, sometimes for the better and sometimes with tragic results.

This story is original and thoughtful. The reader easily becomes part of this family; becoming part of their struggles and dreams. The reality of their circumstances are just that, reality.

About the Author
Paul Backalenick has worked a variety of jobs including: psychiatric counselor in a methadone clinic, information technology strategy consultant, Director of Admissions for a psychiatric hospital, founder of a web development and Internet marketing agency and Wall Street day trader, among others. He graduated from Brown University with a concentration in Psychology and later obtained an MBA from Boston College. He is a supporter of animal rights, ecology and conservation causes. He enjoys playing piano, poker and golf, and traveling as much as possible. He grew up in Westport, Connecticut and now lives in New York City with his long-time love, artist Karen Loew. Development is his first novel.

Timeless 70's

Before cell phones, before the internet, before AIDs, before emojis, before a lot of things; there were the '70's. A time of sex, drugs, ordinary people, in ordinary families struggling to get ahead while navigating a tumultuous time. The author captures the '70's with precise detail and evocative emotion while telling a timeless story of intricate family dynamics and personal challenges. This novel invests you in characters who stick with you after the last page. I'm eager for a sequel set 40 years later.

BRILLIANT!

First off, Development should come with a warning: "Do not read prior to going to sleep". I can think of at least two nights when my heart rate was so elevated from reading it, I had difficulty getting to sleep. That said, Development is a SUPERB and utterly engaging read as evidenced by my very real dismay upon arriving at the last page and realizing that there were no more to look forward to. Paul Backalenick's sensitivity to the multi-layered, multi-colored, bizarre emotions, motivations, and thoughts of the human species is brilliant, and his ability to weave all that insight into believable, engrossing characters, and an equally captivating story line, is superb. At the same time, I absolutely LOVED the pace of the book. Development is a real page-turner with each swiftly moving chapter satisfyingly answering unresolved questions from previous ones and introducing a whole new set of issues demanding closure. It is hard to believe this is Paul's first book but I, for one, eagerly await for more from this talented author.

Memorable!

This gripping novel transported me back in time to my teenage years growing up in suburbia in the 60s. The wonderful depiction of life-like situations re-kindled my own feelings ranging from joy to despondence during that time of my life. While just bringing back these memories was valuable to me I also found the story incredibly compelling. The suspense was not just due to the story line but also in the desire to find out the next stage of development for each of the multifaceted characters as they grew through their experiences with family, friends and colleagues.
