A look into another world
By Karen @ TingsMom
This book opens in the year 2019, and really has two stories within the book. I actually thought that these two stories were happening at the same time and would eventually intersect, but I was wrong. As we learn in the end, the two stories are actually 20 years apart. And yes, they do eventually intersect, just not in the way I thought they were heading.

The first story is that of siblings Judson, Rune, and Abel, and their father on an island. They are living on the island as an escape from the harshness of the real world. Their father has determined they need to return to the mainland, and starts making preparations to do so. They thought of returning to the mainland seems to cause a separation among the siblings that cannot be mended.

The story of the siblings on the mainland didn’t do much for me. I felt that too much effort was made to make it futuristic that it sometimes made it difficult to follow along. I felt some of the actions of the characters was unrealistic, and I felt lost most of the time. There just didn’t seem to be a sense of flow to the story and it fell flat for me.

However, the second story in the book was taking place in the mainland. Mobile, Alabama is in despair. Christopher has landed on the mainland in hopes of finding his family but instead meets a lovely girl. The two of them set out to try to save themselves from the looters and murders that have taken over the town. Their story is one of suspense that actually kept me on the edge of my seat. I was rooting for them to make it out alive, but their actions seemed to sometimes make me think they wanted to be killed. We are led to believe they eventually made it out of Mobile by way of a tattered sailboat.

Is Isolation A Good Thing?
By Chessy The Cat
Dean’s first novel in The Ferocity Series, Ferocity, contains two stories that alternate and then merge into one. There is the present day story of the father and his three children on an isolated island. And, there is the story set some 20 years in the past which brings the novel full circle.

Present day – food sources are starting to run scarce after several years of drought on their island home. Rune, Judson, and Abel must now decide whether to join their father by returning to the mainland or to stay on the island and hope for the best. The isolated island is the only home the siblings have ever known. Stories told by their father and a booked called The Manual are all they know of life beyond their waters. The decision to stay or go causes a rift in their relationships.

Twenty years ago – Christopher is on his way home after six months at sea. The captain informs the crew that there has been a breakdown of society in their absence. Once they land in Mobile the reality of what has happened hits them in force.

The story flows at a good pace and the characters’ personalities are well developed. The novel appears to have only a couple typographical errors which is remarkable. Dean does use a lot of adverbs and passive phases though, making the story less active.

The book does not do is explain what causes the downfall of society. Nor does it explain the meaning of the hourglass in the circle symbol. I do not know if the sequel goes into these aspects of the story.

I did enjoy the story overall and will read the next book.

If you enjoy apocalyptic novels
By Tiffany Hathorn
This book presents readers with two separate (yet connected) stories. One story is of a sailor named Christopher, who is returning to the mainland after at least 6 months out at sea. He heads home to Mobile, Alabama, looking forward to reconnecting with his father and the rest of his family However, what he finds is society in a state of massive, violent upheaval. The other story is of a small family: a father; his teenage twin sons, Jude and Abel; and his daughter, Rune. They have escaped from a worldwide catastrophe to the safety of a deserted island. The children know nothing of life outside the island other than the information contained in a book called "The Manual", which warns them to never leave the island because the rest of the world is wicked and deadly. However, with the food supply running low, their father fears that returning to the mainland is a necessity for their survival. Unfortunately, his decision causes a rift in their family. Meanwhile, you follow along with Christopher as he navigates danger and relationships in the middle of a rapidly decaying society (which is set not too far in the future).

If you enjoy apocalyptic novels, this is definitely worth a read. Kayla and Preston Dean did a great job of creating believable characters, world-building, and moving the plot along in a way that keeps you engaged. The ending of the book definitely leaves you wondering what happens next - which is fitting since it is the first in a series.
