Perfect continuation
By Denae C
Each book is different yet alike. We have more inventions and more lies and secrets in this book, but we still have healing and wizards and following the Mother's law no matter what.
There were more pov characters in this one, but it only added to the tension. When would Nirel be caught in her web of lies? Why does she seem so ready to have everyone killed? When would Vigorre figure out the truth? Bow would the Matriarch react to the wizards this time? Is an enemy of an enemy really a friend? It was all so twisted.
I love that the wizards have to stand on their principles no matter what. No excuses. If someone doesn't want to be healed, you have to let him die. Ah, free will at its worst.
Dualists and Purists are so deviously evil! They seem nice, but they're so full of lies! I know a book is good when I hate the bad guys.
I'm quite excited for the next book.

Not as good as the first two books in the series.
By Amazon Customer
I did not enjoy this book as much as I did the first two in the series. The author brings in faction politics for most of the book which for me made the book tedious. Also the alternating characters in which the story was narrated was not enjoyable. I found myself skipping sections of characters I did not care for or found irrelevant at that moment. I really wished the story had stayed focused on Josiah. This book also had a good bit more personal soap opera between the characters. I pushed myself through it so I could get to the fourth book. I would have given this three stars except for the ending. There is one character who causes problems yet never gets punished for her actions and the other characters are so forgiving of her.

More of the same...
By P. D. HENDERSON
So... it's all written well enough, but at this point it's just starting to get old. Betrayal after betrayal after betrayal. Will it never end? This never needed to be a four book series. That it is seems to be a symptom of the author's inability to self-edit. I think the second and third books could have been shortened and combined into one. Honestly, I liked the third book better than the second, but I'm giving it a lower rating because at this point it's all starting to seem like more of the same stuff repeating with very few new developments added on.
Maybe there's some people won't mind that so much. Maybe you can think of it like watching a tv show where you go three or four seasons in and nothing has really changed. But personally that kind of thing starts to bug me after a while. And with this series we've definitely reached that point. If I had it to do over again I'd skip book two -- and probably book three as well -- and just deal with having to play catch-up in the final book.
I'm also getting tired of all these books having endings that don't /feel/ like an ending. They aren't cliffhangers exactly, so I'm trying not to let itaffect my ratings. But at the end of the book there is nothing that gets resolved and so it just feels as though it stops right in the middle. And that really gets old quickly. I'm really starting to get sick of it.
