Yet Another Brilliant Book From Shannon!

The Mime Order is the spellbinding second installment in Shannon’s seven book series and this is just the beginning of a new literary phenomenon. TMO is beautifully written and allows readers to delve even further into the world of Scion, a trip that they surely won’t forget. I was a bit worried originally how this series could encompass so many novels, but I should never have doubted Shannon because this book is damn near perfect. Things are just starting to heat up for Paige and her friends and I don’t want to miss a single moment.

Paige has escaped Sheol I, but she’s not even close to being free from the clutches of Scion. She’s now the most wanted criminal in the area and her face is everywhere as the world searches for the Dreamwalker. To make things even worse, a deadly crime causes the Unnatural Assembly to cast an eye upon Jaxon and Paige. Not only that, but now it seems that the Rephaim are no longer content with hiding and they’re not pleased with Paige.

I just don’t even how to describe how much I enjoyed The Mime Order, but I do know that this was even better than The Bone Season (a feat that’s hard to top considering TBS was one of the best books of 2013). I started off my year right by reading TMO and there wasn’t enough time in the day for me to read this book. Every time I start reading, I just wished I could put life on pause and reading without any interruptions.

The Mime Order is slow-paced and yet I was completely addicted from the first few sentences. The action and romance are small portions of the novel, but it’s the incredible world-building, character development and prose that kept me hooked. I loved watching Paige dissect Scion’s secrets layer by layer and show readers what lurks in the shadows of this civilization. Scion is not just your average dystopia, it’s far better and I can’t wait to see more of it in the following 5 novels.

Though I really enjoy following Paige and Warden on their journeys, I’m so glad that we get to see more of the side characters. Characters like Nick, Eliza, Zeke and countless others are given the opportunity to shine and I found that I enjoyed reading about the secondary characters much more than I thought I would. In book one, I didn’t care much for anyone beside the main cast of characters, but now I have so much love for all of our heroes and heroines.

Just reading Samantha Shannon’s prose is enough to remind me why I love this series so much. I would reread this series just to give me something to devour while I wait for book three. There’s something so ethereal and dream-like about the writing in TMO that makes me feel as if dream-walking and psychics are legitimate. I love all of the imagery in this novel especially when it involved moths and butterflies; I’m so glad that the artist in charge of the cover decided to highlight these extended metaphors on it.

Can I just say that I love Paige and Warden’s relationship so much? It’s truly not fair that Shannon keeps on teasing us with their relationship, in each book we’re only given a smidge of romance and it’s just not enough. The few scenes that we do get are heart-pounding and so memorable, but I just need more Warden-Paige page time in the subsequent novels.

I loved The Mime Order and it was everything I wanted it to be, much to my delight. From start to finish, this book is truly something special and I know that readers will simultaneously loathe and love Shannon after that cliffhanger TMO ends with. I need, need, need, need book three more than air at this point and I just know it will be bloody brilliant.

Slow Start but Worth the Read

Wow, I COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN! Initial overall thoughts: If you loved The Bone Season (The Bone Season #1) then you will LOVE The Mime Order (The Bone Season #2)! Drop what you're doing and carve out a day, afternoon or several bus rides to dive into the depths of the world of the Scion and get ready to lose yourself to the world of Samantha Shannon!

Where do I start? This is a hard review to write only because I want to do TMO justice and I can't really divulge all of the wonderfulness because of spoiler-y-ness. I mean come on, I seriously finished this in about 7 hours and it was a whirlwind of amazingness! I will warn that the first 60-70% felt rather slow for my general taste but because of Shannon's amazing writing/world building/characters I really did not mind it especially when she gifted us readers with the last 30-40%! Hold on to your seat because that part is AH-MAZ-ING!

Let me start by saying that Samantha Shannon is a true master of her craft! She can spin a web so intricate that you feel as if you have actually fallen into a world so real that you can actually touch, hear, feel and smell everything around you! Oh, I could read her words forever. Honestly, because she is such a talented writer that is what helped me through the slow start.

Secondly, the characters just get better! We learn so much more not only about Paige and Jaxon (who I seriously love, but I hate...I love to hate him) but also from our secondary characters who really seem to fill in and wow, I love Shannon for giving them some depth! Warden to me is still mysterious but OMG how much do I LOVE him. Again, Warden does not really come back in until the last 30% of the novel but when he does it's SOOOOO worth it! There is one scene...and, well, you will know when it hits you! It's perfection.

Honestly if you're still on the fence about this book, trust me (and many others) when I say, this is worth the read! It's slow to start but it's absolutely stunning and one that I would hate for you all to miss out on! So what are you waiting for?

Enjoyed This Novel

I did not like The Bone Season at all. I thought it was a stinker if a book with juvenile writing. However, in The Mime Order the author totally redeems herself and pulls off a strong interesting story with much more depth to it over The Bone Season. I almost think that this book series could of been built alone on the London underworld, Unnaturalness, Ghosts, Mime Lords, Mime Queens, and the whole gang system. It was such an interesting world that I absolutely enjoyed reading about it. I wasn't a big fan of the whole Rephaim idea and found it awkward and lacking anything to keep me interested or entertained.
I still think the two don't blend well together and it makes for an awkward pairing. Like this should be two separate series. One being the Rephaim, secret alien takeover of earth, etc and the other series being supernatural, ghosts, gangs, Unnaturalness, Scion, Powers, etc. this is a blending of two distinctly separate types of books and it doesn't sit well together.
Overall though, the writing in this book is excellent. It has great detail and you can almost feel the dark seedy underbelly of London where ghosts and gangs roam, Mime lords and Mime Queens rule, and Scion oppresses. I am anxious to see where the series goes.

What Is Thought? And Why Do We Think?

Like a line of people whispering their secrets to each other, in The Sleep Garden Jim Krusoe offers us the inhabitants of The Burrow, a group of characters so deeply esconced in their own lives that they rarely see anyone else from the outside world. They are all thinkers who continue to live on and on, forgetting (and then sometimes remembering) the particulars of their interactions with each other. The Burrow "is safe," a place where its occupants are protected from harm and thus are free to keep on thinking.

Krusoe's writing is seamless and fluid, with natural rhythms that lead us to highly believable images and strange ideas. The Burrow speaks with great silence (as we do in our own minds) that often dissolves in the way that memories and associations fade and disappear as we hear private thoughts from deep inside each person, thoughts that would never otherwise be stated aloud. All of these people have been ".....dropped onstage midway through some ongoing dramatic series, or maybe a situation comedy" as they muse to themselves about celebrity and fame, personal failures, sexual relationships and the future while carving ducks, working at phone sex jobs, or playing the stock market. The Sleep Garden explores the nature of thinking itself in both a casual and surgically analytic manner. What, indeed, is thought? And why do we think?

The natives of The Burrow like being hidden away. Whatever they actually do, their thoughts matter more than anything else. They live "as the self outside the self, the self mysterious in the way we cannot ever be a mystery to ourselves, the self known through touching others in the way we ourselves can never be known, the self outside the self, of it being touched, of our being connected, for once not alone but a part, for once no different, for once at home in a world where we are never at home, for once ourselves, remembering, wherever we may be."

And, alternatively, "likewise, it is also possible to think you have touched a thing when you have not, and to believe you have remained untouched when this is not the case." Constructs of words create their belief systems and propel them through their lives. In The Burrow everyone seems to be waiting - yet, as the author asks, "But waiting for what? And waiting for how long?" as life's eternal questions arise within them. As Junior thinks, "There are many who say the world is neither happy nor unhappy, but how are we supposed to know anything at all about the outer world except through our inner world?" Life becomes a script that then becomes real as these Sleepers are immersed in their own worlds because very little that's going on anywhere else matters. The story is everything, and is it reality or a dream? It's up to the reader to decide, as "what is this dream.....we humans have to live out an alternate story to our own lives?"

The Burrow's inhabitants are "twilight souls" who ".....neither exist nor do not exist.....but who reside in a moment that is inseparable from memory, who live in hope that's a kind of hopelessness." Eventually they all question whether they are already dead.

Witty, philosophical, innovative and sparkling with understatement, Jim Krusoe's The Sleep Garden leads us to question whether we too are alive or only dream shadows of ourselves, important to one another or not thought of at all, using touch as a primary mode of communication and spending most of our lives talking to ourselves. This is a book about dream and memory, want and expectation, the basic realities of life and, most of all, both the power and vulnerability of thought.

Great novel-highly recommended

The Sleep Garden opens with several questions for which no answers are provided. In the course of the book, I couldn't help but pose questions to myself to try to explain some strange occurrence, dialogue, situation, or some such, and yet as soon as a possible explanation or answer started to form it would disperse. I think great books make the reader sit and ponder for a moment before continuing on, and this one had me pondering quite a bit.

Many of the reviews highlight the book's humor, and there is a lot of it, but that isn't the substance. The bits of humor are sprinkled like sugar over an otherwise savory meal, highlighting and contrasting the various flavors. I found myself laughing (or at least chuckling) countless times (WYASBIWYCIM-"Wow! Is that Welsh? Or maybe Polish.") but so often a strikingly deep passage would come out of nowhere and make me do the pondering thing again.

There's much to think about: the space between life and death, wakefulness and sleep, reality and irreality, hopes of another, better life. This is a fantastic novel, and one which I'd recommend to everyone. Jim Krusoe can write!

I see twilight souls.

My book club just read this. Well, I read it. No one else could get through it. It's not for everyone... if you like "metaphysical" or "postmodern" novels like Remainder or Kafka on the Shore, you will love The Sleep Garden. The characters were well drawn; the lines between reality and unconsciousness and memory and fantasy deliciously blurred. Krusoe deftly breaks down celebrity culture and the distancing/false intimacy of technology. The best writing challenges our view of life and its meaning. The Sleep Garden achieves this, with the bonus of some laugh out loud lines.

In the fall of 1941, at the age of twenty-six, Jules Archer joined the US Armed Forces. A few months later, he joined MacArthur as a member of the small task force being sent to New Guinea.

They fought in a jungle among a primitive Melanesian people, some tribes of which were headhunters. For nearly four years they endured in the distant jungle. About the Author
Jules Archer was one of the most respected names in nonfiction for young people. During his lifetime he published more than seventy books, which have been translated into twelve languages throughout the world. He lived in Scotts Valley, California, until his death in 2008.

Alex Kershaw is the widely acclaimed author of several bestselling books about WWII, including The Bedford Boys, The Longest Winter, The Few, Escape from the Deep, and The Envoy. He is an honorary colonel in the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division and resides in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

My dad fought in New Guinea in WWII, so this book piqued my curiosity. It was an easy read that matter of factly tells the story of the deprivations and horrors of jungle warfare.

However, he was a “highly in demand” featured speaker, who performed hundreds of solo humorous talks similar to what would become the stand up comedy of now days. He gave paid talks to many men's clubs (Authors Club, Beefsteak Club, Vagabonds, White Friars, and Monday Evening Club of Hartford, among others). In the late 1890s, he spoke to the Savage Club in London and was elected honorary member. In 1897, Twain spoke to the Concordia Press Club in Vienna as a special guest, following diplomat Charlemagne Tower, Jr.. In German, to the great amusement of the assemblage, Twain delivered the speech "Die Schrecken der deutschen Sprache" ("The Horrors of the German Language"). In 1901, Twain was invited to speak at Princeton University's Cliosophic Literary Society, where he was made an honorary member. A light read - good, but not great

I won a signed copy of this book from the Goodreads First Reads program.

First, I have to get this out of the way. When I saw this book on the list of giveaways, I had no clue its as a YA. For whatever reason, this cover doesn’t look YA for me. The cover is very dark and serious IMO, and the book is more light and comedic, though it does address some serious subjects. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that it WAS in fact teen fiction, because that’s primarily what I read.

The basic premise of this story is a teen girl named Lily crashes her car and dies for a few minutes. Upon being resuscitated, she realizes she’s now plagued by their weird blobby things. They follow her everywhere and are super distracting. Soon after, with the help of Zoe, a psychic medium goth from her school, she realizes they’re ghosts that have come back with her from the Other Side. There’s another presence, that of a really hot teen boy named Nick. She’s sure he’s a ghost, but he claims he’s not dead. He doesn’t look like the other ghost blobs, so what is he? Things are just starting to get weird for her.

Lily was a tough character for me to warm up to. She’s very prissy and OCD. She hordes hand sanitizer like it’s going out of style and likes things prim and proper. The story starts out with her being stupid and crashing her car because she’s staring at the polish on her fingernails instead of watching the road. (It was a really terrible color on her, or so she claims.)

I did eventually warm up to Lily, by about 30% in I was kind of liking her. By the end I did really like her. So, that was kind of cool, going from not really caring about her to actually feeling strong emotions over what she’s going through.

Actually, I think the author did a really good job with all of the characters. At first they appear one way, but then as you get to know them, you realize that there are layers beneath them that make them the way they are. Lily is OCD and perfect because her baby sister died at 3 months old and her parents have never been able to move on, even after 9 years. Afraid to step on any toes, she overcompensates by trying to be perfect. Then there’s Zoe, the goth girl from school who can see the ghosts. Lily always thought she was a super weird freak, but she soon realizes that Zoe is not only super nice, but also sort of insecure. Her parents don’t really seem to care, so perhaps she dresses in the goth style in order to get attention.

Rating this book was really hard. It started off with me not being so keen on the book, we were thrown instantly into the action and I almost felt like I was missing something. Then as it went on, I warmed up to the characters and the plot. But then it would drag for a while and I didn’t feel that “I NEED TO READ” feeling after putting the book down until the very end. I did read the last 45% of the book (some 80 pages) over the course of about 2 hours just because A. I wanted to be done reading this book, and B. There was suddenly a lot of action and I HAD to know what would happen next. If there had been more of that during the beginning/middle of the book, this would have been a 4-5 star read.

In the end, I was left with warm and tingly feelings, so when forced to choose a solid star rating, I will round up to a 4.

(I really liked Nick. I want to read more books with guys like Nick.)

A story that made me smile

Lily dies because of a bad manicure. Fortunately someone rescues her. When she wakes up in the hospital a while later she sees all kinds of black blobs. She soon finds out that they are ghosts. One of them is different. He isn't a blob, he's a real person, a very hot one, and his name is Nick. He needs Lily's help, but Lily has no idea where to start. She isn't afraid to ask for help though and together with her new friend Zoe and Mr. Wan from the nail salon she starts to unravel the truth. She doesn't have much time left and when she finds out what it is she has to take immediate action, otherwise something really bad will happen...

Tiger Lily is a fun and romantic ghost story. Lily is completely herself. She has a distinct personality. She loves to have her nails done in certain colors, she uses a lot of hand sanitizer and she wears cute outfits. Nick is a bad boy and at first he mostly annoys her, but soon they find out they like each other. He's kind and supportive, but he doesn't remember much about who he is and why he needs Lily's help. She has to figure out why he's by her side and what's happened to him. I liked the friendship aspect of the story. Lily is lucky in that department. There are many people who want to help her with her search. The accident has changed her, but not so much that she's a completely different person. She lets her friends transform her when it's needed, but she stays the same Lily underneath. Lily knows who she is, she knows what her problems are and she isn't afraid to face them.

Tiger Lily is a wonderful story. I really enjoyed reading it. There's a lot going on and I often had a smile on my face while I was reading this story. There are also serious aspects, but there were many things that made me smile. Lily has her quirks and she doesn't hide them. She is who she is, which is refreshing. She often lands herself in situations that are out of her comfort zone and they made me laugh. I loved this story, it's sweet, it's fast paced and Wende Dikec has a great sense of humor. If you like entertaining paranormal romance you should definitely try this book.

I usually like the fluffy and/or ridiculous SVH books. Anything with high drama and too much Steven Wakefield makes my bowels irriatable. The Golden Family has been fighting like crazy, and looks as though its splitsville for ma and pa. Good not great..in SVH terms, and if ya get this books you gotta get the next 2 cuz their like connected.
