Endless Night, by Anna Andrews

"Now I have a choice to make, between family loyalty and an alluring stranger, between darkness and the light..."
At only seventeen years of age, Ellaria, crown princess of Voxhan-6, has lost everything she's ever known.

After her home planet is destroyed by invading forces, the orphaned heiress is sent to live with Titan, commander of the famed Haruvian Knights and the estranged son of Ellaria's late stepmother the queen. Titan's home is Haru, the Sunless Planet, a world of endless night lit only by stars and the strange glow of its native bioluminescent plants.

As romance blooms between Ellaria and Titan, Titan teaches Ellaria the history of Haru and of the Haruvian Knights, who seek to protect their planet from the treacherous Daiha Warlocks, whose dark magic stripped the sun of its power and plunged all of Haru into darkness generations ago.

When Ellaria and Titan are separated in the forest one day by an attacking darkstalker, Ellaria, having succumbed to the monster's noxious breath, awakens to find herself in the care of a young man named Rory, whom she soon learns is himself a dreaded Daiha Warlock—one of the last, and their prince by birthright.

As she comes to know Rory and his mentor, Gan-Lock, Ellaria learns that all is not as it seems on the planet Haru. There's more to the story of the missing sun than meets the eye—and good and evil, light and darkness, are not as clear-cut as they first appeared. Ellaria soon finds herself falling for the handsome warlock prince—and learns that she herself may share the connection to the flow of life that fuels his mystical abilities.

Caught between her affections for both Titan and Rory, Ellaria finds herself at the center of an ancient war, and, as violent tempers and the thirst for vengeance rage on both sides, she will be forced to make a choice—between the bold knight who's sworn to protect her at all costs, and the powerful mystic who may hold the key to Ellaria's own secret power... a destined prince who might aid her in restoring the kingdom she lost.

Fast-paced, colorful, unexpected, with memorable characters and a very sweet ending.
By Maximilian Thunderbritches
I received a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved this book! Honestly not a genre I would usually consider reading if it hadn't been offered to me for free, but maybe I need to be more open-minded in my reading choices. This book was well-written, imaginative, fast-paced, and hard to put down, with lots of narrative twists and turns.

I found all the protagonists pretty relatable in some way, even the one who turns out to be an antagonist in the end. Trying to avoid spoilers here, but this person ended up being a really well-fleshed-out villain. The heroine, Ella, is both tough and vulnerable by turns, as well as endearingly quippy. I switched allegiances between the two guys in the love triangle, Titan and Rory, a time or two, but in the end I felt satisfied that Ella was with the guy she was meant to be with.

The reason I give this book four stars instead of a full five is that I would have loved for it to be longer (I was sad when it was over so soon!) and include more setting description. The author introduces a really vivid story world in Haru, the sunless planet, and I would have liked to know more about its history, the Daiha and the Haruvian Knights, etc. I'm rooting for the author to write a sequel where we [MILD SPOILER AHEAD] find out if the sun is ever restored, but with the story of Ella and her true love tied up with a neat little bow at the end of this book, I wonder if that'll ever happen. Maybe a romance about one of the other characters would be cool (*cough* Eris *cough*). Or maybe a story about Ella's future kids.

In summary, I think you'll love this book! Strong characters, a fast pace, unexpected twists and turns, and a vivid and intriguing story world make this a great read you won't want to put down until the happily-ever-after.

A wonderful summer read for young adults!
By Miara
I was given an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Ellaria, the crown princess of Voxhan-6, has lost everything she holds dear. Running away from those who would want her dead, she seeks asylum in the planet of Haru, where she hesitantly gives herself up to the protection of her estranged stepbrother (the son of her stepmother), Titan. As she gets to know the new place she calls home, she also meets the Daiha-Warlock, the kind and wise Rory. Being part of the Haruvian knights sworn to protect their planet from the dreaded Warlocks, Titan has a distinct hatred for Rory's kind. Caught between her growing feelings for Titan and her affection for her new friend, Ellaria must choose which side she must stand on, even as sinister forces threaten to tear her apart from the second home she's come to love.

Perhaps what really stood out to me from reading this book is how real and beautiful the world of Haru is. Despite the lack of sunlight in the planet, Anna's vivid descriptions of the world, from the bioluminescent plants to the soaring trees high above the ground, as well as its culture and people, the setting of the story is brought to life. The hidden mysteries of Ellaria's new home and the dangers that lurk in every corner doesn't detract from the beauty of the world, but rather adds to it. Even as there are dangerous monsters hiding in every corner, ready to strike at the protagonist, the elegance of the planet of Haru is preserved, precisely for the fact that they can blend in so well. Overall, the world and its history are all solidly developed.

Ellaria herself is also a wonderful, imperfect character. She has her moments playing the damsel, but she also has her moments of playing the shining, main heroine. As someone who has lost her home planet, Ellaria is an admirable protagonist, in that she's able to express her naivete and her occasional pettiness (being born and raised a princess, after all), without degrading her core personality, which is being a staunch, defiant, and steadfast teenager with a good head on her shoulders.

As far as love triangles go for this YA novel, Titan and Rory are also evenly matched. The author has no bias towards one character, as most other YA authors are wont to do, and the reader may be surprised to find themselves rooting for both of them. They're both well-developed characters with a genuine voice of their own, and the love triangle between these three is certainly quite entertaining.

Perhaps my one regret with this book is the details of the story; while the narrative itself is steady and the action, for the most part, is maintained throughout the whole book, there were some parts that left me wanting more. It would have been nice of the author to explore and build the history of the Daiha-Warlocks more, or perhaps more solidly defined the interpersonal relationships that Titan has with his knights. Because Anna's cast of characters were so well-diversified, I would have liked for the secondary characters to have been given more chances to shine as well.

But still, on the whole, this is a wonderful and satisfying afternoon read; I would highly recommend it as a light summer book for young students or for those relaxing on the beach. The book is quite easy to get lost in, and Ellaria's adventure is certainly one heck of a ride!

Writing that brings a new world to life
By Anessa Kemna
I was given a copy of this book in exhchange for an honest review. Let me preface this by saying that I'm not usually very intrigued by YA romance, but this one really grabbed my attention. The author's point-of-view choices gave me a first-row seat into the minds of some incredibly well-crafted characters, and the pacing of the novel meant that I didn't want to stop. The action builds really nicely throughout the book, and, without spoiling anything, the twists and turns are really enjoyable. It's a perfect book to curl up with when you don't have anything like work or school, since, if you're anything like me, you won't want to stop. The writing is great, and will transport you to the world that's been built here. These characters, and this dark planet, are excellent companions for a winter weekend.

Your Mother Doesn't Hate You, She Hates Your Skirt: An Imperfect Daughter's Slanted Musings, by Lindsey Hockman

Written through the eyes of a self-described imperfect daughter who did very little to gain the admiration of her mother, this comically recounted childhood (and beyond) provides a fresh and hysterical look at the ever-complicated mother/daughter relationship. The novel moves from personal accounts to amusing (and often shudder-inducing) essays describing mothers from all walks of life, providing fodder for the masses to enjoy.

About the Author
RD Vincent is an American Author who was born in the historic Village of Goshen, New York, on February 14, 1979. He was raised on a small dairy farm along with his brother and sister and attended Pine Bush Central Schools. In late 1997, he attended SUNY Potsdam and began his studies as a Music Major. Feeling a bit overwhelmed in the music world, he sought refuge in both the English and Business Econ Departments. By the fall of 1998, he had a rare opportunity to meet New York Author and Poet Maurice Kenny. Over the next year, Vincent studied with Kenny in his creative writing class. Later that year, inspired by Kenny, he began writing for The Racquette, SUNY Potsdam College’s Newspaper. He started a small cooking column called “Something to Cook About.” The columns were published once every two weeks and contained a short story which always had the characters cooking or baking something. To add to his stories, Vincent would even include the recipe to help the readers associate more with the story. It was at this moment that the idea for Donbridge came about while collaborating with his Grandmother and Great Aunt who both had a multitude of stories that were passed along to them from their elders. This project would take Vincent nearly fifteen years to storyboard. Now, after much hard work and a savvy editor, Faye Walker, and a talented graphics designer, Kate Horan, RD Vincent’s publications: Donbridge, The Ring of Lazarus, Donbridge, The Witch of Tamarack Hill and Donbridge, The Miracles of Midwife Sutton are available for eBook and hardback purchase on Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com

Somewhere In-Between (Breathless Book 1), by Izzibella Beau

There’s life, there’s death, and for some, there’s the in-between.

Mara Crowe was your average high school senior. She had good grades was bests friends with Ashley, and in a relationship with Van, one of the star basketball players, that was more off than on most days. She was trying to get her last year of high school all in order with less partying and more time studying. Of course, not wanting to be the party pooper, and also wanting to make sure that Van didn’t do anything to jeopardize their relationship once again, she agreed to one last party. One last night that was supposed to be fun-filled, one last night that changed the course of everything.
Max Carter was there, wherever there was at the moment. He knew he was stuck in the in-between, but wasn’t sure how to get to either side. In fact, sometimes he didn’t know which side he wanted to go to. He’d left it all behind a few months ago in a spur of the moment decision, yet he wasn’t where he thought he would end up. There were people that came and went, but no one stayed as long as he had in this place. He could watch from afar what his family and friends were doing, but he couldn’t reach out to them…he was all alone.
That was until she came. She filled that empty space that he always had. She made him laugh, cry, feel all the things he never thought he’d ever feel again…but most of all she made him love. He knew there would come a day when she would be able to choose her pathway. One day, she would leave and he would be left alone once again.
Max could help her go back, but was he willing to give up his happiness for her. Time was running out for both of them. Which path would they choose? Would they pick the one that would allow them to be together forever, or would they be separated by a time that no one knew existed?

A most read.
By ANGELA PASCUALI
This is a most read. It will live you thinking about your own life. Do yourself a favor and have a box of tissues ready when you read it. I could not put the kindle down. It literally had me thinking of my own life. The way the story is told with Mara and max to find your true love in the inbetween world and not really know if it is real or not when it feels so real and all you want to do is be with that person you cant. Well i wont spoil it to much for you. Just do yourself a favor and buy the book. You will not regret it.

Waiting for the point that never came
By Jacky
This could have been another great dystopian YA series. I loved the idea behind it – the whole life takes place in a digital world -, because we live in a world of digitalization and this could possibly be reality in just a few years.
Unfortunately, there are some points about the implementation that I didn’t like and made the book quite unrealistic and cheesy.

Maddie is in a big conflict when it comes to Justin. She has to decide on which side she stands: Her family and what her father achieved fort he society or on Justin’s, who revokes himself from the system and fights fort he real offline-world. Unfortunately, she does a lot, except making a decision. That’s why the story feels unfinished (ok, it’s a series, but you shouldn’t be forced to read every book o fit to get something like a sticking point or result) - it's missing the point.

Maddie isn’t a strong character. She can’t make a decision and stand by it. I couldn’t identify with her at all and I really didn’t like her. When she meets Justin, the love story overshadows the real conflict. I mean, I love reading a good love story and it’s fine when it takes the main role even in this genre – but this one didn’t work. They get closer physically very fast and before the reader can feel any romance between them. It’s the “he’s so hot”- love thing. When they know about the other one’s feelings, it’s clear that a love relationship can’t work and Justin refuses to even try it. That doesn’t really change or develop in the first book, so if you need something like an end, this book isn’t for you.

There are also quite a lot illogical things going on. Justin drives a Mustang in a world where nobody drives a car anymore. How could this work (Gasstation? Mechanics?..)? And Justin’s father likes to invent water-vehicles. Where’s the point with that? Water isn’t important in the story, this element seemed inappropriate to be repeated over and over again.
This book is full of clichés and superficial. You won’t find a reason why Maddie loves Justin except for his hotness. You won’t find a reason why her parents are still married. For me, this book is missing the point. I don’t know if this will change with the next books of the series, but I won’t read them. I really missed complexity, logic and a deeper level behind everything.

If you’re looking for a dystopian YA series with a love story, I would totally recommend you the Armor-series by Lauren Oliver, which is my absolute favorite regarding to this. Or maybe even Cassia & Ky by Ally Condie.

Two stars – I didn’t like it, but the idea was nice and it’s a fast and easy read.

I absolutely enjoyed this story!!!

I enjoyed this book, the characters meet and fall in love while they are stuck in limbo between life and death while they both are in comas, different then any other books with the same story line. Awesome read!!! Can't wait to read more of this story!!

****Gifted Book for Honest Review****

She filled that space that he always had.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015: The award-winning David Vann has written an elegant and fierce novel about love, betrayal, the limits of forgiveness, and “unconscious child-joy that [can] explode like the sun.” Every day after school, Caitlin walks to the Seattle Aquarium where she finds refuge in the fish and waits for her single mother to finish her job and take her home. At the aquarium, an old man who loves fish as much as Caitlin, befriends her, cracking open a family secret that will change her life forever. She begins to fight with her mother, all-out confrontations that are raw, rapt and unforgettable; falls into deep young love with another twelve year old; and the joyful dream of having a bigger family threatens all that she’s known. Aquarium is beautifully and patiently written, and will make you ache with remembrance and empathy. – Al Woodworth

Review
An Indie Next Pick for March; An Amazon Editors' Best Book of the Month

Praise for AQUARIUM:

“Elegantly written and fiercely imagined...physically, this book is so gorgeous it enhanced my reading experience. I found myself turning pages slowly, then running my hand across each smooth page. The photographs throughout the text, along with the turquoise capital letters that begin each chapter and mark the author's name and book title on every creamy, thick page, reminded me that no electronic reader could provide this tactile and visual experience...suspenseful …at times, this is a painful novel, but its beauty propels it toward redemption.”—Elizabeth Taylor, Chicago Tribune

“Much like the waters of the Seattle tourist attraction at its heart, David Vann’s new novel, Aquarium, virtually bends light, plunging the reader into the relentless darkness of tormented souls in a splintered family...His language hits the reader like shrapnel in a metalworker’s studio—fragmented and sharp-fitting for novels so packed with shattering turns.”—Tyrone Beason, Seattle Times

"Gripping, painful, but ultimately hopeful, Aquarium is a coming-of-age story that explores the limits of love and forgiveness. Vann submerges you so deeply in Caitlin’s world, you’ll be gasping for breath when you finally surface. A."—Isabella Biedenharn, Entertainment Weekly

A novel, but it's also an art object. Scattered throughout its glossy pages are beautiful photographs of rare fish; it is as much a pleasure to see and hold as it is to read...Vann's provocative prose is filled with a sense of wonder and beauty, even when the lives he describes are tragic."—Heather Scott Partington Los Angeles Times

“Cinematic...Aquarium is a genuine departure for Vann, an authentically new direction...Its delicate, coming-of-age sensuality and bright saltwater menagerie.”–Lydia Millet, The New York Times Book Review

"Since electrifying the literary world five years ago with his debut novel, Legend of a Suicide, Vann has racked up an astonishing number of international awards. This lovely, wrenching novel should add to that list."—Library Journal (starred review)

"By pulling no punches in this explicit exploration of family, forgiveness, duty, acceptance, parent-child relationships, and what constitutes abuse, Vann has outdone himself."—Booklist (starred review)

"A kind of modern fairy tale...Unlike Vann's other novels, which exist in a closed system of violence and despair, this story offers redemption...Vann's novels are striking, uncompromising portraits of American life; here is another exceptional example."—Kirkus (starred review)

"Vann’s elegantly written, emotionally intense novel juxtaposes the contained world of undersea creatures with the life of a family forced beyond its self-protective isolation...a moving exploration of the boundaries we draw around ourselves to stay safe and unchanged."—Publishers Weekly

“If deprivation was to Larkin what daffodils were to Wordsworth, then David Vann’s daffodils are fish...Told bravely but persuasively...The author has metamorphosed himself into a 12-year-old girl with startlingly brilliant results. Aquarium is as rich as good poetry and as addictive as a first-class detective novel.”—Wynn Wheldon, The Spectator

“A triumph.”—Daily Mail (UK)

“A stirring tale that isn’t as simple as it first appears.”—Esquire (UK)

“This novel is arguably Vann’s brightest...Caitlin’s tale with its many surface ripples proves immersive, the narrative propelling us along like a forceful current...Once again, and in contrast to many of his peers, Vann’s trademark limpid prose enables us to observe far more of what lies beneath.”—Weekend Australian

Prepare to be shocked! Awesome!
By My 2 Cents
Aquarium is an addictive read that hooked me early on, shocked me as the story progressed and made me wonder whether emotionally wounded individuals can ever truly heal.

The story opens in 1990's Seattle, where 12-year-old Caitlin lives in a tiny apartment with her mother Sheri. Sheri works long hours at the local container port to support the two of them. Together their life has been built on routine. They wake early, have breakfast, and then mom rushes off to work and Caitlin goes to school. She is always the first kid to arrive at school. Mom works overtime whenever possible, and Caitlin goes to the "aquarium" after school until her mother is done with work. This arrangement was cheaper than childcare, but Caitlin doesn't mind, she loves her time spent at the aquarium, and is fascinated by all of the exotic fish she visits with each day. She hopes to study the science of fish when she gets older. When day is done Caitlin and her mother collapse together or talk briefly, unless Sheri has her boyfriend over, and then Caitlin is off to her room.

One day Caitlin befriends an elderly man at the aquarium, the two talk about the fish. Soon every time she goes to the aquarium, the man is there as well and soon they begin to talk about more than just fish. Caitlin likes the man and is unafraid, so when he asks a favor of her, she thinks nothing of telling her mother. No way could Caitlin have anticipated how her mother would react, and the horrific consequences that would result as a result of the situation which has been set in motion. The mother/daughter relationship will forever be changed.

I loved everything about this simple, but well crafted story. Caitlin is such a strong, and brave young girl. She's smart, inquisitive and longs to be loved. Despite the situation over which she has no control, she displays a childlike determination to make things right.

The book contains lovely color photographs of exotic fish which is such a nice touch. Readers who enjoy stories about dysfunctional childhoods or coming of age stories, this is one of the best of its kind that I've read in a long time. Be prepared to be shocked! A word of caution -- a few reviews out there give away some significant spoilers, do yourself a favor, and just dive in, too much detail will spoil the experience for you. So far this is my favorite read of 2015.

Another excellent offering from David Vann
By Cloggie Downunder
“Like a leaf giving birth to stars………..Body of small green leaves, veined, very thin, its fins painted in light cast from elsewhere, but from his eye out his long snout, an eruption of galaxies without foreign source, born in the fish itself. An opening in the small fabric of the world, a place to fall into endlessly.”

Aquarium is the fifth full length novel by American author, David Vann. It is set in 1994 and narrated by twelve-year-old Caitlin Thompson. Caitlin’s world revolves around three important elements: her hardworking single mother, Sheri; her best friend at school, Indian émigré Shalini Anand; and her afternoon visits to the Seattle Aquarium. The year is drawing to a close, class involves making a paper-mache Divali Reindeer and Sheri has finally met a decent man, Steve, when Caitlin encounters an old man at the Aquarium, an old man who seems as fascinated by the fish as she is. And who seems very interested in her life.

Vann gives the reader a very diverse cast of characters: the effervescent Shalini; the admirably balanced Steve; the damaged and resentful Sheri; the earnestly repentant Bob. Of course, Caitlin, with her optimism, her love and her capacity for compassion, outshines them all. Their interactions are sometimes funny, sometimes decidedly uncomfortable, sometimes shockingly raw, but fans of Vann’s work will know not to expect a novel filled with sweetness and light. His work has been described as confronting. The plot takes a few unexpected turns before arriving at a startling climax.

While readers may find the lack of quotation marks for speech irritating, this is more than compensated for by the gorgeous descriptive passages, especially, but not only, those about fish. “You’re in trouble, Shalini whispered in my ear, leaning close. All the little hairs stood up on my neck and I had goose bumps. Shalini could make me shiver, as if my entire body were a bell that had just been struck” Another excellent offering from David Vann.

Lessons learned from fish
By TChris
Aquarium is one of the most intense novels I've ever read. It isn't about fish, but it is, to the extent that fish teach us about people. In part, Aquarium is a coming of age story, the story of a girl named Caitlin who discovers her own identity and comes to accept harsh truths about her mother Sheri.

Aquarium is also about the possibility of change. The waspfish lives fifty feet underwater where light barely penetrates. Rise a few feet and the waspfish might experience a small change "as something enormous." So too might people who step outside the "narrow range" in which they live their lives. You cannot change the past, but it might be possible to change how your react to the past. Sheri hates her father but her father has changed. Can Sheri?

At 32, Caitlin Thompson looks back to the time when, at age 12, she visited an aquarium in Seattle every day after school before walking home. She likes the way the fish are protected from predators, unlike the real world, where people face all the risks of fish in the ocean. Every day, Caitlin runs into an old man at the aquarium who makes a point of talking to her. The encounters appear to be innocent but the situation is ominous. Is he a lonely old man or a child molester?

The leafy seadragon does nothing but hide. As the story progresses, Caitlin keeps parts of her life hidden but can't imagine living that way. "There has to be more than just hiding," the old man tells Caitlin, but hiding keeps the leafy seadragon safe. Caitlin values safety, enjoys being home with her mother even when Sheri is so wrapped up in her new boyfriend that Caitlin becomes invisible to her. Sheri is scraping by on the salary she earns unloading containers from cargo ships. The aquarium is her after-school babysitter. Sheri used to take Caitlin to work during overtime shifts until a customs inspector threatened to call social services. Caitlin's greatest fear is not of the old man but of social workers taking her away from her mother, particularly after the police correctly suspect that Sheri slapped her.

What Caitlin sees of adult life is unbearably sad. People are trapped by their lives. Sheri resents working a job "that meant nothing and would lead nowhere." Hatred inspired by the father who abandoned her to a hellacious existence consumes Sheri's memories. Sheri has good reason to feel angry but she is so consumed that she pollutes Caitlin with her rage and resentment. When Sheri lets the past control her, even Caitlin's home does not feel safe. The reader cringes at some of Sheri's behavior with Caitlin, but it is hard to blame Sheri for being the person she has become. At the same time, it is easy to be concerned about Caitlin. Many of the adults in the novel feel like they are living lives filled with dents that can never be repaired; they are Caitlin's role models.

I won't discuss what happens in Aquarium beyond the setup. The powerful story moves in unanticipated directions. Sensitive readers might find it too disturbing. It is often raw and painful, the kind of story that makes the reader want to scream at a character to make her understand how wrong she is. David Vann is able to spark that reaction by creating characters that are utterly convincing. Aquarium is not a sunny story of forgiveness, but it is a realistic story of redemption that reflects both the difficulty and the possibility of change.

Even if you do not read this extraordinary book, you should page through it to look at the pictures of fish. They are just as gorgeous as Vann's elegant prose.
