Ghost whispering teen kicks *ss!
By Katie O'Sullivan
Bridget White is the 16-year-old main character of this debut YA novel. Bridget's older sister died in a car crash when Bridget was only a freshman in high school. She almost died too but the doctors brought her back to life. Since then she's seen dead people. Her sister was only the first.
For two years, she's been visited by various ghosts who died unjustly. She figures out how to ease their spirits and get them to let go of this world and move on to the next. It takes a lot of research and work to figure out what the spirits need and how to help them. No wonder her grades are slipping and her former friends think she's weird. Oh, and her ghost sister nominated her for the Fall Homecoming Court. Like she has time for that.
The only bright spot? The hunky angel Kyle who's been assigned as her "watcher" and has given her an out. On her 17th birthday, there's a ritual she can perform to go back to being normal. No more ghosts distracting her from her Shakespeare homework. No more hauntings in the school hallways that have earned her the reputation for being a weirdo. The downside to this plan is having to say a final goodbye to her sister.
Ms. Hawke has an excellent premise and takes us for a wonderful ride as Bridget struggles with her gift, and the latest ghost to haunt her...the spirit of a missing girl who was abducted and brutally murdered by a serial killer who preys on troubled teens.
I loved this story, and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good ghost whisperer tale. The writing is crisp and the author does a great job with the POV. Bridget's voice is snarky enough to keep you smiling while the action and suspense will keep you turning pages well into the night.

Riveted from start to finish!!!
By My Secret Book Spot
“Phantom Touch” by Jessica Hawke
5 out of 5 stars
Make sure you have a block of time when you start this book because you will not want to put it down! I sat down to read the first few chapters and did not get up again until I hit the last page! Jessica Hawke delivers with her novel “Phantom Touch”. It has just the right mix of paranormal and reality, humor and angst, friendship and love, but the heart of the book is learning to be okay with who you are.
Bridget literally has the phantom touch…she can see and communicate with ghosts. She deals in what she terms “wrongful deaths”. Her ghosts aren’t quite ready to head to the other side and she helps them find closure so they can. It’s been a few rough years for her as she developed her gift but her seventeenth birthday is around the corner and she’s ready for everything to change. Her dreams of a normal future are threatened by a very unhappy ghost that refuses to leave her alone. As her plans take detour after detour she is faced with the ultimate decision…will she accept herself for who she is and embrace her fate or will she leave it all behind to be just a regular girl?
I loved being on this journey with Bridget. She was funny with a quick wit and intelligent with a knack for thinking on her feet. I felt her pain, her indecision, her loneliness, and her longing for normalcy. I loved her sense of adventure even when she thought she had none and her courage as she faced and helped the ghosts move on. In a world where she lacked friends I wanted to hang out with her because she was just cool.
The outlying characters all bring something to the table as well. Emily, her crazy best friend, brings the drama and adds a little lightness to Bridget’s dark. Michael, her cute friend that is a boy, brings a sense of possibility…a glimpse at what her life could be like. Valerie, her sister, is the voice that prods her to try harder to actually live life, not just watch it go by. And last but not least is Kale, her ghostly Watcher. Not only does he look out for Bridget as she navigates the spirit world, but he grounds her as well and their chemistry practically burns up the pages.
The best part about the book is that it’s extremely well written. It flows from start to finish and keeps you riveted to the page. I’m not certain if Hawke intends for this to be a stand-a-lone or the beginning of a series but I hope for the latter. While the book has a definite ending there is certainly room for a series to continue to grow from it. I, for one, would love to see Bridget’s adventures continue! I would happily recommend this book to all looking for an awesome read!

Teen Girl Stuck Between Two Desires
By Wendy S. Russo
***I was given an e-book copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.***
Bridget helps the wrongfully dead pass on to the hereafter. It's not something she wants to do, but if it earns her a shot at a normal life, she's up for it. In the opening chapter, while she prepares to send off the ghost of a middle aged woman, her sister Val sits irreverently on a headstone and keeps her company. Bridget has researched the woman, and after she's shown pictures of her children and grandchildren, and the ghost moves along. Bridget has one week left until she can perform a ceremony that will shut off this strange ability. She's anxious to get rid of it, but she's also dreading it a little. First she has to let go of Val, who died two years earlier in a car accident.
On the way home, Bridget sees a missing person's poster for Natalie Fullmer. She gets a very strange feeling when she sees it. The girl's mother believes she's run away again and has washed her hands of the mess. Natalie's totally hot little brother, Michael, is holding out hope, and that brings him and Bridget together. Of course, things get complicated when Natalie attacks Bridget from beyond her shallow grave. Because Natalie doesn't want Michael to know she's dead, Bridget has to pretend to be looking for her when she's actually looking for the killer.
Also in Bridget's life is an annoying little brother who plays video games at jet engine volume; a divorced mother who works as hard to forget she had an older daughter as she does to put food on the table; and a best friend who is in dire need of a spanking.
Phantom Touch is a young adult paranormal story, told in a very believable teen voice, which focuses more on the complications of Bridget's personal life than the boy who's walked into it. That's right. Even though Bridget has a crush, and it would appear that Michael likes her, too, both kids are too preoccupied with the sisters that are lost to them to start much of a relationship with each other. The two (living) girls in the story have conversations about parents, and concerts, and classmates, making Phantom Touch one of the most realistic teen stories I've read in the YA paranormal genre. At the same time, the serial killer arc brings attention to the dangers and the seeming innocent things that can make someone vulnerable to the evil that lurks below the surface of society.
I very much enjoyed seeing how Bridget's story unfolded. It appears to be a standalone novel, but like the pilot of a television show, the ending left open the possibility of a long-running series. The novel includes some violence and a serial killer that target problem teen girls. I don't recall coarse language and there are no touchy/feely scenes. She did, however, make me cry, so that has been taken into account in my 5-star rating.
