Dark and unsettling dystopian world..
By Michael Nail for gimmethatbook
This review originally appeared on my blog at www.gimmethatbook.com.
This book is dark and unsettling, especially in the description of Wynter’s seizures and how much pain she is in during one of her episodes. She is kept unaware of what her true purpose is and used by the research facility to try to discover how the world ends.
When she ends up in the outside world, she is understandably naive and unsure of how she fits in. The author does a nice job of conveying her doubt and confusion, while painting a dystopian world with an underground community trying to fend for themselves. There is a love interest, which adds to Wynter’s dilemma but should be a big hit with the YA audience.
I found the medical and hospital settings the most interesting to me, as this is a new addition to the whole dystopian theme. Wynter is a strong girl and the author creates her character as one who develops character as the book goes on, with elements of suspense that will keep readers wondering what will happen next. Wynter has some hard choices to make and she struggles with them, just as an ordinary teen would. She experiences betrayal and hurt in some very well written scenes, and I felt my emotions stirred as I started to realize what was happening to her. So much responsibility heaped on a person!
This is book 1 of a trilogy, following the patterns of many dystopian works. The ending of the book is the obligatory cliffhanger, guaranteed to keep you waiting for book 2. I for one can’t believe what the author has Wynter do at the end….but that’s the idea. According to many positive reviews out there, a lot of people are invested in this series and are waiting anxiously for the next one. I’d love to see how Phipps can build on this popular story.

Fab debut novel
By Shona Booky Ramblings Lawrence
I'm not quite sure where to start with this review.. I didn't read the whole blurb before deciding to read this book. I read only the first few lines. Don’t stand out. Blend in. Remain invisible. Those are the rules I lived by—the rules I thought would keep me alive. But it was enough to grab my attention and it would not let it go.
It took me longer to read this than it should have done as some real life stuff got in the way, but for those days when I couldn't read it, the story line was playing round in my head, I was left wondering what the characters where up to and what they were going to do when I found my way back to them.
Some would say that the book ends on a cliffhanger, that's not really how I see it. The book ends, leaving room for the next book in the series, but there are things mentioned in this book that have no resolution. Think of the bigger picture, it may take another book or two (maybe more) to get all the answers. But if this book is anything to go by, the wait will be worth it.

Original and compelling dystopian novel
By Denny
Ultraxenopia is one of the finest dystopian novels I have read. It's well written, compelling and entirely original. Better than Divergent and the Hunger Games!
It is successfully written from the POV of the main character, Wynter. Her journey is our journey. As her story begins we know from her internal dialogue that she is quiet, conforms to her society's expectations, desperate to fit in. She is no rebel. She has no special attributes to help her deal with her debilitating disorder, or the consequences of it. She is everyone and no one. We feel her terror, her fear, her confusion.
We get to know the characters as Wynter gets to know them. They become as real to us as they are to her. So 5/5 for characterisation.
Initially the story moves slowly as we live alongside Wynter. We gain an understanding of her society and sets the dark aura that pervades it. The language is powerful. The writer has a terrific skill with words. Great prose, great dialogue. Compared to other dystopian novels 5/5 for composition. (It compares well to literary fiction, perhaps even 4/5)
The greatest strength of Utraxenopia is its plot. Wynter's disorder and the role it might play in the story's resolution is original and compelling.the twists and turns are unexpected and thrilling. So 5/5 for plot
Wynter faces some interesting ethical dilemmas and I think that this is one of things that sets this dystopian story above others. Apart from the quality of the writing, it is a pleasant surprise to have these dilemmas considered. Also, to consider the manipulation of the people by the state, although not a new theme, but original in its subtlety. 5/5 for themes
This is not only a story set in a dystopian world, but it is also a mystery and a thriller. I think it would appeal to a wide range of readers, not just fans of dystopia.
