Another good reason to get to the gym!

Gymrat kept my attention and had me guessing all the way through. It’s fast paced and full of surprises. Matthew’s perseverance is inspiring as he pushes towards a lofty goal despite feeling abandoned by his family and being the focus of a team of bullies. There are lessons to be learned here by all age groups. A fun and thoughtful read.

Matthew teaches us all that with love and understanding square pegs can fit into round holes

Gymrat tells the story of a young man who finds comfort and companionship in, of all places, the local gym. Left alone due to unforeseen circumstances, Matthew is befriended by custodian Mannie. The maintenance man helps him prove an intriguing mind/body learning process. With Mannie's help, Matthew strives to uphold his family's tradition of winning a coveted scholastic prize. As he works hard to reach this goal, Matthew teaches us all that with love and understanding square pegs can fit into round holes. Gymrat is a fast paced read the whole family will enjoy.

From Trapped Rat to Triumph

Author m.m.burke (and yes, those are small letters on purpose) bursts onto the Middle Grade scene with a debut novel that could be described as Karate Kid meets Home Alone. Meet Matthew, an insecure “barely thirteen” year-old middle schooler with a ditzy mom who asks all the right questions but doesn’t wait to hear the answers and a dad who is still struggling to prove something to his own father. These parents aren’t in the picture long before they jet off across the world, leaving Matthew in the capable hands of a quirky, yet intriguing nanny. Just when our hero gets used to being pampered, she abruptly disappears and he’s left with only her talking bird, a flurry of mysterious pink envelopes, and a new and very wise friend he makes at the gym where he takes up residence. You see, Matthew is afraid of staying home alone and finds it more comforting to crash at the local gym than face the empty darkness of his house. But while he’s at the gym by night, he’s still tormented by bullies at school during the day. Add to that the fact that his dad—a bit of a bully in his own way—insists Matthew hold up the family tradition by competing in and winning a highly competitive academic competition. Things get interesting when he and his new mentor, Manny, a custodian at the gym, discover a secret which will help Matthew ace the competition! Gymrat is full of plot twists, surprises, secret identities, and even spies! In this story, no one is who they seem to be (or who they say they are). The best part, however, is when Matthew has his moment of triumph and an opportunity for his come-uppance with the boys who have been tormenting him. The beauty of the story is that he does not exact an eye-for-an-eye revenge, but instead shows a level of maturity well beyond his “barely thirteen” years. Author m.m. burke has spun an inspirational story for middle readers full of fun, quirky characters, and life lessons that go down easier than a chocolate milkshake. Enjoy.
