Alex van der Haar's problems are pretty simple. His best friends, Crink and Ruth hate each other. His girlfriend doesn't like the oddball new lecturer he's hanging out with. Crink's car keeps breaking down on the way to class in the mornings.
And then, suddenly, people start to disappear. Just like that. Gone, overnight. And the strangest thing? Alex is the only one who remembers any of them at all.
What happens when the whole world changes, and nobody knows? Who can you trust when everybody seems to be keeping secrets? And how far would you go to uncover the truth?

Fasten your seatbelts...
By M. Thornburg
People are disappearing. Lots of people, everywhere, all the time. From the present and from the past too. They not only stop existing – they stop having ever existed. Reality closes seamlessly around them and they blink out, like switched-off lights, from the memories of everyone who knew them.
Well, from the memories of almost everyone. Alex Van der Haar remembers Frank… sort of. He dreams about him, sees him or almost sees him sometimes. When Alex was very young, his family got used to the idea that this "Frank" was Alex's invisible friend, strange as it might be for a young boy's invisible friend to be an old man. Now that Alex is a university student, Frank is still with him. His friends Crink and Ruth, and his girlfriend Julie, know about Frank. It doesn't matter to them, because they know Alex is smart, funny and capable, so it's okay that he's also sort of weird.
This is a weird book. It's science fiction, I guess, in the same way "The Matrix" is science fiction – in fact, it has quite a lot in common with "The Matrix": it posits a similarly unsettling (but certainly not identical) vision of reality. It toys with solipsism and at the same time recognizes the importance of community, family, friendship, and love. Its main theme, I think, is the constant and unavoidable tension between these two poles.
The voices of the narrator and characters are colloquial, smart, funny, profane, vulgar – be warned – and also at times quite lyrical. The story takes a while to get off the ground, but it's worth the reader's perseverance, or at least I found it worth mine. The author is South African, and the story is set in his country, so (again, be warned) much of the language will be unfamiliar to American readers, but I found it to be worth the effort.
I'm giving the book four stars instead of five because I thought it could have used some judicious cutting (and one more proofreading to get rid of typos like "show" for "shoe") to make it move a bit faster through the first half. If you want your science fiction to follow well-worn paths, you probably won't like it. But if it's in you to stay with a story through new and unusual territory, I think you'll find this one rewarding.

Interesting Premise
By batman237
Alex Van Der Haar is a pretty typical guy by most standards. He has friends, a girlfriend, a school life, along with a whole host of other things that can only be described as typical. With one notable exception: he has an imaginary friend named Frank. Frank has been around since Alex was a child. His friends and parents found it a little strange that Alex's imaginary friend was an old man, but none of them ever realized that Alex didn't make Frank up. He's just the only one who can remember him.
Set in a world where people are constantly disappearing, and nobody remembers them, Nails In The Sky addresses what happens when somebody does remember.
This story is very light on the science fiction and errs more toward the metaphysical as it questions our reality and offers theories about the strange things that happen in this life.
The writing is slightly above average. It starts out a bit slow and long-winded, but gathers steam as it moves along through the plot. The characters are interesting, and the story is very intriguing. You might have a hard time getting through the first part of the book, but I think you'll find it's worth your time.

An exhilarating journey
By Wesley Estment
An exhilarating journey centred around a small, sleepy inland town in the southern-most tip of Africa yet spanning the universe that we think we know. This title challenges the mind and leaves you pondering your own existence whilst offering a potential theory on all the inexplicable aspects of life and eerie occurrences in the world we call home.
