Exceptionally well-written

These stories are exceptionally well written. The author has an effective voice. While I loved several of them for their originality, others were political stumps with straw man characters. She commits the unforgivable sin of breaking the fourth wall to comment on gun control, for example, after delivering her point much more subtly in a perfectly well-crafted story about a shooting. My favorite story by far was the opener, Nelson's Mandala. (The play on words instantly grabs one's attention.) It's the story of a new age bookstore-owning heir whose billionaire father passes away, drawing press attention on his little shop. It does a good job of juggling many different themes and symbols, and ends perfectly, a quintessential example of a strong, modern short story.

This is a decent collection of short stories, which will get your brain whirling and make you look at the topics differently

The Grey Forest is only 76 pages long and includes a collection of nine short stories covering a range of issues and genres.
The book opens with a short story entitled ‘Nelson Mandela’. It is about the relationship between father and son. The father was a billionaire and well loved by many. When he passes away the attention turns to his son and the bookshop that he owns.
I have seen a few reviews for this book and most state that this was the best story in the book. However for me I couldn’t get into this story and I’m ashamed to admit that I started skimming over it.
As with all books which contain numerous stories, you will find some that you like, and others not so much. The short story that really stood out above all the rest for me was ‘The Neighbours Girl’. It was a short story about the war in Iraq and the USA’s reasons for going to war. It will certainly have you thinking about whether the right decision was made.
The stories are all unique and and cover subjects you don’t normally read about in fiction. I did feel that some of the stories were aimed mainly at the US market, such as the story on ‘Gun Control’, however this didn’t take away the enjoyment too much.
This is a decent collection of short stories, which will get your brain whirling and make you look at the topics differently.

Beautiful Stories.

While I'm not a fan of short stories, this collection really drew me in! *No spoilers here*
I was really drawn into the story entitled Nelson's Mandala, and have to say it was my favorite one. A story of a father and son full of realism, inspiration, and written in such a lovely way.
There is a story about the gun-control issue in America which shows both sides of the issues and really makes you think, very compelling.
Maureen has a talent for creating enticingly, beautiful stories. Its definitely worth the pick up!
