A Triumphant and Perceptive Vision

Somewhere in the first volume of "The Miranda Complex," Barry Smolin’s epic odyssey of a teenager’s journey through adolescence, a teacher cites Wordsworth’s observation that “the child is the father of the man.” It’s an apt piece of insight to retain while reading this tale of youthful Lance Atlas, for though the novel reports the adventures of a kid growing up in Los Angeles during the early 1970’s, it does so by traversing the gamut of adult emotions.
Full of nostalgia, the novel transports us to places long gone like Kiddyland and the pony rides, to familiar landmarks like Wilshire Boulevard Temple and the Griffith Observatory, to venues still hip like Pink’s and Canter’s. The La Brea Tar Pits, a significant meeting place throughout the story, serves as the novel’s center. It is where post-high-school Lance bumps into Miranda, the significant other in his life and cause of the so-called complex that serves as the title of trilogy. Their meeting triggers the memories that constitute the narrative.
Including a verbal soundtrack of the popular music of the time, a litany of quoted poems from Byron to A.E. Houseman, a wealth of classroom discussions related to literature and philosophy, the novel raises questions that transcend the lives of teenagers. Indeed, the primary story of how Miranda’s interest in Lance not only ignites his libido but also stimulates his deep-rooted belief in the “shame of wanting” reflects a constant tension that quivers throughout our culture.
As Odysseus himself travels from woman to woman to woman with faithful Penelope waiting for him at home, so Lance moves from the frozen-banana-eating girl at Zody’s to the bewitching Lorelei to the older and experienced Taryn with faithful (to a point) Miranda waiting in the wings. Lance’s metaphoric journey evokes the spiritual travels of another Odysseus-like city-dweller, Leopold Bloom of James Joyce’s "Ulysses."
But wait! There’s more. The entire piece is held together by the pitch-perfect recreation of the teenaged jargon of these LA high school kids—the “chick clique,” the “stoners,” the “C basketball team,” and the rest—most of whom are pumped by music and stoked by drugs. Reproducing time and place through contemporary language, Smolin’s kids answer questions with an ambiguous “Nyeah” and express their appreciation of existential angst with, “Dang, dude.”
What appear to be the ruminations of an unhappy teenager is much more. For in narrating his own poignant story, Lance Atlas, like Holden Caulfield and Huck Finn before him, is actually telling the story of all the rest of us as well. Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll may characterize much of the novel, but when combined with the products of Smolin’s vivid imagination, "The Miranda Complex" is, as the kids would say, as “flagrant” as it gets.

What a perfect coming of age book and then some

What a perfect coming of age book and then some. If you grew up in Los Angeles, wish you had grown up in Los Angeles, would like to pretend you grew up in Los Angeles, have crushed, loved, lost, fantasize, been blown away, been disillusioned by someone, grown up, not grown up, had your heart broken, had your heart filled, created art, wished to create art...well look at that this just about covers everybody. Therefore I suggest all of you go on out and read this book. Everybody will find a universal truth in it.

It just seemed like I read 471 pages of someone's teenage angst

I joined Goodreads to become acquainted with some new authors, I won this book. Upon reading this book about the life of Lance Atlas, I was certain that I had just read someone's journal. It included what he did with his friends, what went on in school, and, some things he had to do as a Jewish boy. There was a lot of hanging out and smoking dope. Throughout, their is Lance's inability to act on his feelings for a certain girl. It just seemed like I read 471 pages of someone's teenage angst.
