Dale Boyer was born in Moline, Illinois. He attended Blackburn College (B.A.), The University of Wisconsin-Madison (M.A.), and Vermont College (M.F.A.). Gentle and powerful

Has social media made us more navel-gazey than we were before we invited it like a poised teenage vampire into our lives? Or has it just made it okay for us to check our level of delusion and uncertainty against the crowd's? Back in the pre-internet day, it was customary to feel isolated and get lost in your own spirals of doubt as a young person forging your identity. Of course, it still is. But I think we spent more time alone with the terror of our insecurities, and might have been reticent about sharing them so easily with our friends. Those of us who went to college before everyone had a PC -- nay, before cell phones, or even, dare I say, widespread employment of answering machines! (the victrolas of voicemail) -- had to communicate in person, on the land line, or by the US mail. We had more time to be lonely. We didn't share our emotional lint as commonly as is done today. And sometimes, to do so took a lot of bravery. Not that it doesn't anymore.
Dale Boyer has written a contemplative coming of age novel, "The Dandelion Cloud," set in the days when Americans drove Pintos, Vegas and Gremlins, had rotary phones, graduated from State College and married their high school sweethearts. Back when going all the way was a pretty big deal, divorce still shocked, and Anita Bryant was publicly railing against homosexuality. Think "That 70's Show" without the certainty that we're all all right. It is not a period piece, but in quietly reminding us of the social context of just a few decades ago, Dale highlights the trembling difficulty of coming out in the 1970s, or any time.
We know that Justin, a lonely, midwestern college freshman, is gay from page one; but he doesn't, or he's terrified to admit it to himself, let alone anyone else. He's confused, and spends every spare moment obsessively second-guessing and reliving every interaction with his new senior friends, the hot, hot dorm advisor Kyle (Kelso with dignity and a brain), and the Fogelberg-loving, philosophizing Craig (Hyde Lite). (Justin even has a Fez, in his Eastern European roommate. I would insert an emoticon here but they didn't have those in the 70's. They were just called smiley faces.) Though they don't all know it from the outset, these three are on an intimate quest to find the holy grail of Justin's sexual identity; and kindly, no one flinches. Justin painstakingly wrestles with the difference between love and lust, and where love and friendship overlap.
The bald descriptions of awkward, unattracted, bad college dorm sex made me cringe and laugh when Justin loses his virginity to an experienced older female classmate, who gets little more out of it than a deposit. Hey, even Dan Savage had girlfriends. Dale's imagery, from the stubble of dormant corn fields to deep, blue-lit snow on an evening quad, gently underscores Justin's isolation. There are many times you just want him to grow a pair (ha ha) and face the acoustic music. And when he finally does, it's the dandelions that make this story a victory. I will never think of them the same way again. Now forget I said that.

Seeing the World Through Someone Else's Eyes

One reason I love good literature is its ability to help me see the world through new eyes, to take on a persona and perspective far different from my own. Dale Boyer's debut novel did an outstanding job of allowing me--a straight female--to have a better sense of the coming-of-age, coming-to-grips-with-love challenges faced by a young man sorting out his very mixed feelings, fears, and relationships. Good literature also allows readers to find the parallels between their own life and the book's characters, and to connect in a meaningful way. The Dandelion Cloud succeeds at that level, as well.I was transported back to my own freshman year at college and revisited some of the painful and profound corners of those memories that I often gloss over. In short, I'm very glad to have experienced The Dandelion Cloud, and I am grateful to Dale for sharing his talent and his vision with us.

An Excellent Personal Story

Just as promised, this is a great story about how we first imagine love to be and how that compares to reality. The story is a very personal one, but is well paced and written with a keen eye for the metaphorical. I like books that are enjoyable to read, with characters who I care about. But I love books that give me something to think about after I've finished. There is plenty here to consider after you've finished reading: what's the difference between loving someone and being IN love with someone; do differences in sexuality make a difference in how we love, or the anxiety we feel when love isn't what we hoped; and when we grow into adulthood, how do we figure out who we are and how we want to love and be loved?
I enjoy the questions the author posed through this story. It's a deeply personal told and it's told well!
